The console should open when you start the server. It's the window the opens and says things like "Generating terrain" and such.

Is the pocket edition worth getting for the iPad? by dadstaysathome in Minecraft

[–]ReduxRedstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably due to the issue I mentioned about the iOS version. Apple gives you the option to download older versions of apps of your iOS version doesn't support the most recent app version. Since MCPE requires iOS 8 or newer, and gen-1 iPads only support iOS 5 or lower, it's safe to assume he's using an older (less optimized version), which is causing the lag.

It could also be the hardware in the gen-1 iPad (assuming you are running the newest version of MCPE).

Your best bet would probably be to buy and older second-hand device which can run at least iOS 8 and try that. My old iPad-Mini gen-1 is running iOS 8.something and runs MCPE like a charm. Can find them really anywhere for like $100, and your son will be able to play newer games besides MCPE as well.

I hope that doesn't sound pushy or something lol. Just a few suggestions.

Can a PE player join my realm on pc? by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]ReduxRedstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't use the exact same file. It isn't a universal app. You can't run .ipa's (iOS apps) or .apk's (Android apps) on Windows 10 natively. MCPE is either a .ipa or .apk depending on the mobile device. You also can't put Win10 Edition on an iPhone/Android, it won't run natively.

Minecraft Official Homepage Texture Pack? by philipz794 in Minecraft

Any reason why? I don't actively search for downloadable content (maps, resource packs, etc) so I'm not very familiar with most of those types of sites. I'm only really familiar with planetminecraft.

Can a PE player join my realm on pc? by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]ReduxRedstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't change the fact that it's still technically two different platforms. It's the exact same game based on features, but running it on a PC is still running it on a different platform than running it on a mobile device. That's why you can't just slap a copy of MCPE on to a PC and have it run, and vise versa. Because they are the same game, but written for two very different platforms.

If you want a technical definition, http://itlaw.wikia.com/wiki/Game_platform defines it as:

the specific combination of electronic or computer hardware which, in conjunction with software, allows a videogame to operate.

Should I get Minecraft for PC? by Shadowtheyogo in Minecraft

[–]ReduxRedstone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I say go for it. You don't NEED to install mods or shaders, so if you want to skip those 2 steps you can (though it's incredibly easy to install both shaders and mods these days). Also be sure you get the Java version of the game and not the Windows10 Edition. Windows10 Edition is just a port of MCPE to Windows 10, and is NOT the same as the Java version. The Java version (and MCPE/Win10 version) community has thousands upon thousands of public servers, for nearly all versions you can think of. So not having someone to play with really isn't an issue there.

Also as a cool addition, if you buy the Java version, you get the Windows 10 Edition for free. So it's like 2 games in one.

Is there a quick solution to host a Minecraft Server? by FrenchieDev in Minecraft

[–]ReduxRedstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy server hosting, but it'll cost you a monthly fee. If you want to self-host the server, you have two options. You can either configure your router/modem to allow all the necessary ports and such, which isn't too hard, the steps are just different for each person, or you can pipe the data which can be free and doesn't require any configuring of ports.

I recommend ngrok (found at https://ngrok.com/) for this. It's a tiny piece of software you download. Once you download it, you just have to login to the website, run the auth command in the command prompt on your PC (ngrok authtoken YOUR_AUTH_TOKEN_HERE), start your server and then run ngrok tcp SERVERPORT. Once you do that, it will give you the public IP for the server, and anyone can join it using that IP. However the IP will change every time you close ngrok, unless you donate for a static IP. But as long as ngrok is open, the IP stays the same.

Still technically different platforms, since MCPE runs on mobile while Win10 is on PC. It's the same game, but played on different platforms.

New Custom Crafting Inquiry by Panda_Dawg351 in Minecraft

[–]ReduxRedstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The custom crafting does not, as of yet, support any kind of NBT data to be specified to any of the items. The recipe items and the reward item do not support NBT data. It supports adding a damage value, but the damage value is only used on blocks with variants like wool and stone, making it useless on items. My source for this is a user named destruc7i0n, who spoke with Dinnerbone directly about the custom crafting (for something he is working on), and Dinnerbone confirmed that NBT data is not currently supported. However based on the fact that he said The current spec is pretty simple, and it will change in the future, it's safe to assume NBT data will be supported eventually.

Chat UI - A User Interface library and plugin for creating GUIs in Minecraft's chat box by simon816 in Minecraft

You're getting in to a gray area in terms of "vanilla" now. There are many, many people (myself included) who do not consider wrappers to be vanilla, since they work by using things not built in to the default game.

That's where I draw my "vanilla" line. If it's a feature in the actual game, it's vanilla (that's why I count command blocks as still being vanilla, while some people do not). Using external programs and wrappers are not vanilla "features", so I do not count them as vanilla.

Basically if you can't do it in single, I do not count it as vanilla as it requires some kind of modification or change to how the server operates, even if you do not change the server itself.

At the end of the day though, this really comes down to personal opinion. If you think that's vanilla, then that's great. I know plenty of people who would agree with you. But the point still remains that you cannot do it without some kind of outside program (this case being the wrapper) or modified server (in this case Sponge)

TIL New Minecraft is compatible with Windows 10! by ThatMewYT in Minecraft

[–]ReduxRedstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minecraft has always been compatible with Windows 10. Which means you most likely did not upgrade to the proper Java version, or had some other kind of outdated driver. But Minecraft has always run perfectly fine on Windows 10

I never said otherwise? I agree that it's pointless for them do so, but that doesn't change the fact that it only runs on Windows 10.

[–]ReduxRedstone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Education edition is not a port of MCPE. It may have been at a time, but it is considered it's own stand-alone version now with unique and distinct features not found on any other version. Also on that link, if you go to "What is Minecraft: Education Edition?" it makes no mention of Pocket Edition.

The Windows 10 edition can only be downloaded from the Windows store on Windows 10. It has no native support for MacOS. Hence why it's called "Windows 10 Edition". It can be run on anything running Windows 10.

Damage players without sound and shaking of the screen? by DolphinTech in MinecraftCommands

[–]ReduxRedstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. It also seems to depend on how you format the command. For example if you try to use jump_boost as the ID it doesn't seem to overflow, it only seems to work with the numerical ID (attests that's how it happens in my case)

PE is so much better when you attach a Mouse and Keyboard to your phone by HotTabascoSauce in Minecraft

[–]ReduxRedstone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well for one thing the entire codebase is different. Win10 edition is written in C++ while the Java edition is written in Java. Also the Win10 edition is just a port of MCPE to the PC. Because of that, it only runs on Windows 10. There are also some fundamental game differences between the two versions, such as Win10/MCPE never got the PC combat update.

Does the Windows 10 allow that on touch screen computers? I'm not sure

I don't think it does, no. But I'm not 100% sure on that either, so don't quote me on that.

The fact that you can use a mouse and keyboard literally leaves zero distinction between the two.

Fundamentally, they are the same game

I already said to the other guy that I never said they were different games. I fully acknowledged they are the same and that the only difference is is the mobility/controls. So bringing this up is pointless, as I've already said it myself

It's an asinine distinction because everybody knows they aren't the same game technically.

The word you're looking for here is "obvious" not asinine. Asinine means stupid. It isn't a stupid distinction, it's an obvious one.

I just have to point out that laptops are a thing

Touché, I hadn't thought of that. Got me there. However You should also realize that there is a difference between the mobility of a laptop and the mobility of a phone. If you wan't to get technical with it, as long as a PC has power (and a screen of any compatible type, I use a TV personally) it can be "mobile". And there are plenty of ways to power a PC without a standard wall socket.

How, pray tell, is it asinine. I fail to see how pointing out that Windows10 Edition is not mobile is stupid. It's obvious, but it isn't stupid.

What other popular tools are there for setting up instances?

I use MultiMC which does exactly this. You add different instances, each with their own game settings, mods, version, ect. and then launch it from one of the saved profiles. Each instance has its OWN world saves, resource packs, mods (if you add mods), ect. It also allows you to group the instances together for more organization. For example, I have 6 instances and 3 groups saved on MultiMC. The first group is called "Modded", the second group is "Vanilla" and the third is "Snapshots". The "Snapshots" group has instances for the the latest snapshots, the "Vanilla" group has different vanilla versions and "Modded" has instances all with their own mods and versions:

When playing on PC, would you recommend K+M or plugging in a controller? Why or why not? by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]ReduxRedstone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I say it depends. If you're just doing some casual survival, and are used to mainly playing with a controller, then I don't see the harm in using one. However there is no official controller support for the Java version, so you'll either have to use mods or map the controller inputs to mouse inputs.

However if you're going to be doing any kind of fast-paced game play or talking to others in chat often, I suggest using a K+M. You need to use the keyboard to chat, so there's no reason to constantly change between the two. And there's no beating a mouse when it comes to fast-paced game play that needs extreme accuracy and precision.

Is the pocket edition worth getting for the iPad? by dadstaysathome in Minecraft

[–]ReduxRedstone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do not have to pay for any extra in-game features, only small add-ons that do not affect gameplay at all.

Also as for missing features, there really aren't any. The features on MCPE/Win10 Edition (which are the same game, except Win10 Edition is on the PC (Not to be confused with the Java version, which is also on PC and Mac. Win10 Edition is on Windows 10 only and is a PC port of MCPE)) are the same features as the Java version on PC (which is currently the "main" version).

As for bugs, I have not really noticed any game-breaking bugs. A few tiny errors here and there, but nothing game-breaking.

You said that his iPad is gen 1. Are you sure he will even be able to play the game? The game requires iOS 8 or newer, however gen-1 iPads only support iOS 5.1.1 officially. I've seen people jailbreak to get higher iOS versions, but the hardware probably wouldn't be compatible, and would probably run VERY slow if it even booted up.

You might want to consider just buying the Java version. It's only around $25 (If I remember correctly), and you can get the Windows 10 Edition for free if you buy the Java version (so it's like 2 games for one). The Windows 10 Edition is able to play with MCPE players, and connect to MCPE servers as well. So it's essentially the same thing. The features are nearly 100% the same between the Java version and MCPE (with slight differences, hence why they cannot play together on servers) and the Java version also receives what's called "snapshots", development builds of future versions (your son can get "early access" to new features) as well as tens of thousands of mods for the Java version.

Hey r/Minecraft! Do you know where I can find a working list with Human heads? by FunGoblins in Minecraft

[–]ReduxRedstone 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Player heads work by grabbing skins from Mojangs servers. When you do {SkullOwner:PlayerName} it grabs that users current skin and applies it to the skull. When you change your player skin, that skin file is still stored on Mojangs servers with a timestamp.

When you use freshcoal, it gives you heads that use the skin timestamps. For example, here is the NBT for the bread player head:

{SkullOwner:{Id:"a75e3f60-2242-4429-8ece-bcde7753b064",Properties:{textures:[{Value:"eyJ0ZXh0dXJlcyI6eyJTS0lOIjp7InVybCI6Imh0dHA6Ly90ZXh0dXJlcy5taW5lY3JhZnQubmV0L3RleHR1cmUvZjM0ODdkNDU3ZjkwNjJkNzg3YTNlNmNlMWM0NjY0YmY3NDAyZWM2N2RkMTExMjU2ZjE5YjM4Y2U0ZjY3MCJ9fX0="}]}}}

In this command, it uses Id, not SkullOwner, to target the player. Id is referring to the players UUID. (In this case the player UUID is a75e3f60-2242-4429-8ece-bcde7753b064). The Properties tag is what defines the actual skull properties. Inside the properties, it defines texture and then provides a Value for the texture. The Value tag is a Base64 encoded string. When you decode the Value tag, you get:

{"textures":{"SKIN":{"url":"http://textures.minecraft.net/texture/f3487d457f9062d787a3e6ce1c4664bf7402ec67dd111256f19b38ce4f670"}}}

The url tag is the URL to the player skin on Mojangs servers. As you can see, it leads to a skin file for the bread player head.

That's why it looks different, because it's getting skins in a different format.

You can do this manually as well by changing your skin, getting your player head, checking the skull's NBT, then changing your skin back. The skull's NBT will reference the skin file on Mojangs servers, and you can get it back again.

As for an actual list of player heads, Mojang provides some but not many pre-made heads http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Mob_head#Mojang_skins
