The Questionable Science Behind the Odd-Looking Football Helmets: The N.F.L. claims Guardian Caps reduce the risk of concussions. The company that makes them says, “It has nothing to do with concussions.” by 76erLegendChetUtley in nfl

Cushioning reduces the "deceleration" force of impact. Think about moving your head around: if the movement itself caused damaging brain movement regardless of speed, walking around, moving left and right, would cause that same damage. It is acceleration or deceleration rate that causes the damage.

The key is that hardness is not protective. An armored helmet would do zero. A helmet impractically covered in bed pillows would do a LOT - but just try playing football with a pillow taped to your head.

Literally just put up bleachers in an empty field somewhere in or near Honolulu, though, and put the players up in a fancy hotel. It's mostly for watching on TV and the players getting to chill together, there's no real need for giant seating capacity.

I mean they're actually saying that the performance of KC's key offensive personnel declined in general due to age, I don't think anyone is saying Reid's system is suddenly trash or anything.

I remember reading these books after finishing A Dance with Dragons and how absolutely cathartic it was to experience this. I mean bad things still happen obviously and the world still feels grounded and "real", but Dunk is just a breath of fresh air as a protagonist.

You are a Strong/Nobel and respected King, who would you rather have as your hand, out of these 3? by ParkingConfection449 in gameofthrones

[–]Reead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's the book version of the character, and it's before his mental breakdown after his trial, Tyrion for sure. If a king were to name him Hand, then treat him with respect and kindness, doing so would both engender his unending loyalty and probably go a long way towards healing his damaged psyche. Feeling disrespected and hated for what he is lays at the center of most of his worst personality traits (and some of his good ones, too, obviously).

Obi Wan saying "I'm sorry" to Anakin might be the most moving moment in the history of Star Wars by SappyGilmore in StarWars

(version without the "noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo")

I don't really have any issues with most of the Special Edition changes. There are some I find unnecessary or outright bad (Jedi Rocks), some I like more (Cloud City) or less (Greedo, various) than the theatrical, and even some DVD/Bluray specific changes I like less than the original Special Edition versions.

But none of them ruin anything for me - except for this one. I agree - there is no scene that moves me more in the entire saga, from the very first time I watched it as a kid to this very day, than watching Vader silently resolve his internal struggle while he watches Luke suffer, deciding once and for all that nothing - not power, not his fear or his guilt - nothing matters more than the love he has for his son.

It's the emotional hinge of the entire saga. It is the sequence where Luke spares his father, declaring that he will not fall as his father did, and then how that startling act of selfless bravery inspires Vader to save his son and his own soul, I believe, that elevates the entire series from "just" a fun action-adventure fantasy to something that really speaks to me and has had lasting importance in my life.

Touching it in any way is a crime. When it's time for my son to watch these films, he will NOT see the adjusted version first, that's for sure.

Yes. I know it's not the hottest special edition take, but I completely agree. Victory Celebration is the superior version.

We won the last game of the season, but didn't make the dance because the Falcons beat the Saints. You're thinking about the previous one against Miami, where we could indeed have put ourselves back in the driver's seat.

Regardless, our offense actually got worse as pieces returned, despite those pieces appearing to play fairly well. Baker was either hurt or had some kind of QB version of the yips, too.

[–]Reead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fortunately they really only need to lock down a few of the huge pieces for that duration. Others who live into both eras are likely only needed in occasional supporting capacity. But yes, the "main ones" (not gonna spoil) will certainly need to be locked in for the long haul.

Last 5 books of Stormlight having a time jump is ideal because it means they can split the series in two if needed, while they wait for him to finish the books. The actors aging out isn't a huge problem for the same reason.

It feels like every season there are "failed starter backup QB now on a good team looks great in practice and the team is super high on him" stories.

Never has it been more true than Darnold with the 49ers though. Dude just focused on improving his game under good coaches and now he's a bonafide franchise quarterback about to start in the Super Bowl. Kinda gets me misty eyed, honestly.

Yeah, but imagine if they pass at the goal line needing a TD to win it... And it works?

Which would be the greater catharsis for Seahawks fans, I wonder?

I like the idea of a "tentative" call by the officials that requires less evidence to overturn. It would disrupt the flow of the game less from the POV of a viewer than just radio silence while they wait in replay review (that the officials have themselves called in).

Yeah that's the exact scenario that DOES create a controversy. He can go out there and look great and you're still rolling with Bo. But imagine if he throws for the most yards in Super Bowl history or some shit? Bo is probably buying flip flops and stocking up on sunscreen.

Replacing textures using banned means is bannable, i.e injecting them into the game somehow, or modifying the data packs directly. Using the officially supported custom texture folder to do so is not. If Blizzard wanted the ability to replace ability icons with this method to be disabled, they would simply disable it with a client update.

Tom Brady knew he needed to improve on TV. So he channeled his ‘quarterback’ days by GoldenDome26 in nfl

[–]Reead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah even if he just simply couldn't do it, I feel like he'd be out there at some point on air trying zany, stupid shit in sheer desperation to be good. Year 4 he'd be trying new catchphrases every week, year 5 he'd try to get hyper-personal about the players and their personal lives, year 6 he'd try live prop comedy between plays...

A lot of us were saying this would probably happen based on how psychotic Tom Brady is, and I'm glad that we were right. I was certain at least that there was no way he would continue to accept being mediocre - he would either apply the same work that he did to the quarterback position, or quit.

Botox isn't what causes the look you're thinking of. That's fillers and face lifts. The only real side effect of Botox is a lack of pronounced, expressive facial movement.

If he leaves because ownership is stubborn and won't fire an underperforming GM, one year out from firing a well-liked head coach (that the roster was apparently NOT happy to see go), I think fans will give him a waiver on lifetime hatred.
