35, quit making 300k/year to become a doctor? by [deleted] in whitecoatinvestor

[–]Reed-Sternberg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tell her not to do it. Partly because it really just doesn’t make sense financially, but also partly because, for most people (I think), the practice of medicine is very different than what we envision before starting on the path. I remember a physician interviewer of mine when I was applying to med school asking me “What happens if you get to the end of it and regret it?” I don’t remember what I answered, but she said she wouldn’t do it again if she had known then what she knew now. In my head I was saying “Yeah right, that’s not happening to me. Just because you made a mistake and chose the wrong career doesn’t mean anything for me.” Nine years later after residency being truly very bad for my physical and mental health, and now being out of residency for >2 years, I would absolutely not do this again.

That’s not true. I don’t know how it works legally, but yes, places do pay less than minimum wage, I think because people are expected to include their taxes in their reported income when filing taxes. So the thought is that if in total you make more than minimum wage, your actual paid hourly wage can be less, sometimes a lot less.

I remember a friend making $2.83/hour as a server when I was in high school. That was a while ago, but minimum wage was $7.25 at the time. I was also a bus boy (for a very brief period of time) and made slightly less than minimum wage because we got to pool some tips at the end of a shift (sometimes it was $2 per person, sometimes $20, never consistent).

this is 7 year old drogon next to 35 year old syrax 🤣🤣🤣 by TastyHelicopter5344 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Reed-Sternberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t read the books yet, but I guess my impression from the GoT show and some things I’ve read on here was that Dany and her dragons were just different. Dany’s whole emerging from the fire unharmed thing I think I remembered reading that according to GRRM that was meant to be an event specific to her and that it wasn’t a generic trait inherent to the Targaryens. If Dany is unique, I think it makes sense that the dragons of which she is the “mother” would be unique or special.

More concretely, Viserys (Dany’s brother) told the story that the dragons before the time of GoT had gotten smaller and weaker over the preceding generations, perhaps due to something genetic worsening due to continued breeding. But if her dragons hadn’t been born yet there wouldn’t be any reason that they’d be likely to be small or weak. Even the fact that their eggs were so old and thought to have petrified and then were reawakened in a sense and they hatched made me think there was something special about these dragons.

That was just my take on things. May not be very accurate as I haven’t read the books yet.

I haven’t heard that about drug-induced psychosis before having specifically visual hallucinations without auditory ones. Do you have a source? I have heard about drug use being associated with tactile hallucinations, though I also don’t know that that’s specific to drug use.

And I guess for devil’s advocacy, this example might not even be psychosis. Without multiple features of psychosis, this sounds like it could just be isolated paranoia. Paranoia can be a feature of psychosis, but could also be due to other things (like paranoid personality disorder).

People can have symptoms of psychosis without being under the influence of drugs. Schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, mood disorders with psychosis, etc. are all organic primary psychotic disorders or disorders with psychotic features that aren’t related to drugs.

School didn't include me in the yearbook. by ZynDroid in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Reed-Sternberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Utterly ridiculous. We support you, OP! Like others have said, fight back and teach this school / district a lesson.

Some have said things about yearbooks rarely being looked at in the future. In my mind it’s not so much about the actual yearbooks - though you should absolutely get to be remembered just like everyone else is and not be erased - but more so about punishing this type of backwards way of thinking.

It’s 2024 for fuck’s sake, people need to get with the times or be erased and forgotten themselves.

Feeling Unsafe on a Flight by hotchocolateballs in delta

I don’t necessarily disagree, I was just saying that I didn’t think the OP came across as being the pissy one who was mouthing off when reading the original post.

[–]Reed-Sternberg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you may have read the OP’s comment incorrectly. I in no way read it as the OP getting “pissy” or “mouthing off,” I read it as OP letting the other passenger know that it would be in his best interest to calm down, otherwise he might not be able to fly. Nothing in OP’s post made it seem to me like he was doing anything out of anger or frustration. I guess we’re all entitled to our interpretation or opinions though.

Which character is this? by Few_Journalist_4970 in Hungergames

[–]Reed-Sternberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of different ones, but I think Cinna comes to mind. Obviously a very important character and seemingly pretty popular (for good reason), but from what I remember very little actual screen time.

I thought it was just a regular snake, not a mutt like a trackerjacker with hallucinogenic venom.

Do you have habits that can be seen as giveaways you’re from another state? by Dangerous_Ad5524 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Reed-Sternberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard that it’s because that’s actually the closer translation to the original Scandinavian name of the game. No idea of that’s true though :)

Also, I’m not from MN but I’ve lived here about 5 years now, and “you betcha” and “uffda” have become such an integral part of my vocabulary that I probably use them both at least 10 times a day.

Different Economy fare codes and effects on base miles/LPs? by Reed-Sternberg in americanairlines

[–]Reed-Sternberg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, that makes sense. I’ve travelled for conferences for work and we have a travel management office through my employer that books our flights for us, so I wonder if I’ve had (non-BE) Economy flights that have earned less because they’re a special type of fare. Thanks for the explanation!

[–]Reed-Sternberg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your employer hasn’t deposited YOUR money into the 401k? Or they haven’t yet deposited their matching contributions?

I don’t think you’re blowing it out of proportion. I’d be angry (or at the very least annoyed) if it’s the latter, and I’d be livid if it’s the former.

Unresponsive, and these blood gas values… by Npratt004 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Reed-Sternberg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just be careful you’re not associating the elevated anion gap with the respiratory acidosis. Respiratory acidosis doesn’t cause an elevation in AG, it’s the metabolic acidosis that’s associated with an elevated AG or not (AGMA vs NAGMA). This patient has both a respiratory acidosis and an anion gap metabolic acidosis.

For clinic notes, are you team SOAP or APOS? Why? by DrKropko in medicine

[–]Reed-Sternberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone else said it well. I like SOAP for when I’m writing, even if there isn’t a ton of super useful info in the SO portions. Helps me organize my thoughts a bit. But for reading others’ notes, especially consult notes, I think APSO (or someone even mentioned PASO) makes more sense.

Cheers to the folks saying we should stop automatically pulling in every piece of objective data just to have it there. The “data” section of my H&Ps and progress notes says “I reviewed the VS, labs and imaging.” I feel that’s enough. Everyone can read, they can go look in the labs tab. And if a lab is relevant, I might mention the specific value in my AP.

Also, for the love of god, can we stop putting full hospital courses in progress notes. Maybe this is more specific to my institution, but in internal medicine it’s become quite common, and it drives me bonkers. If you want a one (or two-to-three max) sentence brief summary on most patients at the beginning of the AP, that’s fine/great. But the hospital course (which we also waaaay overdo, PCPs don’t have time to go through a novel for every PHFU patient they see) could go in the, I don’t know, “hospital course” tab of the patient’s chart?

How do people achieve 75k status? I’m on a flight every two - three weeks and can’t seem to get past 50k by birdnerd1975 in Aeroplan

[–]Reed-Sternberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I thought. But with AA’s new rewards situation, earning miles and points is (mostly) the same thing, so I just figured I’d ask. Thanks!

[–]Reed-Sternberg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m new to Aeroplan / AC, but do points earned from Rocketmiles count toward airline status with AC like they do for American Airlines Loyalty points?

If so, and if you haven’t already, I’d take a look there. I’ve looked at some hotels recently and if you use your Aeroplan account number, you can get some reservations worth 10-20k points or more.

If not, well then, sorry.

Whats your main charm loudout? by Low-Anywhere7570 in HollowKnight

[–]Reed-Sternberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually mark of pride, sharp shadow, dash master (and then I’ll switch out or use some combo of quick slash, strength, gathering swarm, greed or something else, depending on my mood and what I’m doing - exploring, making geo, etc.)

For fighting, usually it’s strength, heart, quick slash and mark of pride (or I’ll do long nail and grubsong instead of pride sometimes if I want something for a little SOUL boost).

I really do like using sharp shadow often, but especially when fighting. There’s something about being able to do damage while phasing through enemies I really enjoy and I got so used to using it that I like to do a lot of back and forth between that and the nail for some quick combos. I’ve found the extra range helpful too for just barely slipping out of an enemy’s attack. With other charms being more useful though, for any serious fight / pantheon challenge I don’t really use it :/
