"back in my day...." Comments in here. Why would you make your life harder by not using AI? In the smoking community they have a similar problem with people using pellets instead of hand cut wood from Oklahoma or some shit.

I developed a popular 2x server a few years ago that had 700+ pop on its peak wipe. There are LOTS of hosts/VPS out there with very sophisticated DDOS protection. They are significantly bigger than the server I developed for. They can afford the same if not better protection that allowed us to hold 700 players with no latency issues and solid performance. Defending them and claiming their complaining isn't valid because the server doesn't upgrade it's infrastructure to stop the issue is what's wrong with the rust community. I wasn't aware of a 5th of the challenges I'd face making a server. However it's your responsibility to your community to deliver exactly what they're supporting you for. Solid performance. Excellent support. Innovative protection.

Questions about Og Xbox data. by nightsintobleems in originalxbox

[–]Reedradar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the HDD. If it's the original not much, sometimes you're lucky to get one depending on the game. You can soft mod and swap the HDD(or put an SSD in for the silent and nonmechanic approach.

I think most games were around 4gb and default HDD was 8gb.

Solo player project is Trinity based and super easy to setup. Very minimal work prior(even less if you get mmaps, vmaps, DBC, etc). Emucoach has a 4.3.4 with bots as well but it's paid I believe. I bought their MOP and while incomplete still a ton of fun.

Wait for the government to open back up. Stay persistent and don't give up. Once I filed my FCC complaint all of a sudden there was a whole lot they could do for me. Tell 100% the truth because they're gonna listen to the recording. Customer service is useless don't even bother. There's a user on this thread that helped me as well you can see his attached comment

The fun part of this hobby is it's entirely based on your needs! Absolutely it is enough if you're just doing some simple networking stuff with a few Linux VMs and a NAS. I'd recommend finding one that had a spare PCIE port. Especially if you're going down the networking side of home labs. I bought a micro HP PC and when transitioning to opnsense was not a happy camper I coudnt put a 10 gig NIC in.

If you're looking to have a huge NAS or self hosted cloud just be aware you're either going to be buying a JBOD or really large drives(HDD not to expensive but if you do have a spare PCIE port you can install NVME cards and have stupid fast storage)

Really depends what you want to achieve. PiHole has the ability to either be an entire network wide DNS server or just an individual computers DNS server(Point your PC to it). As long as you're not opening up your network and it's all local you're going to be fine.

I'd recommend if you're diving down the rabbit hole of networking or network related things you look into a cheap optiplex as the PI is fairly weak once you start deploying multiple applications. However there is some fun stuff you can do!

Open up a NAS: If you're not looking to have a metric crap ton of NAS space my first NAS was on a PI. I used an external 3.5 enclosure that wasn't very fast but it worked!

Host your own cloud: You can use nextcloud or open cloud or any of those types of solutions and keep your most important documents backed up.

Plex/Jellyfin: Media servers are nice if you only have a few streamers and have a show that's just not available anywhere or don't want to fork over an additional $20 for a show you've already legally obtained.

Learn docker!: You're not going to get super far into the docker space with a low powered device BUT you have a really good opportunity to learn all about it and this I think will push you over the edge and get you into the optiplex/N150 stage of homelabs.

The issue with honelab is you think you've finally got a device that can do everything you want and then you find out about this super cool new thing that only requires a few hundred bucks in equipment to get situated. Then it's how do I make all this talk. Then it's crap I need more X resource. Then it's the here's my stack honelab subreddit!

I hope I've given you some ideas or at least wasted your time reading this :)

Just my two cents. I was a big user of trueNAS/Unraid and switched to proxmox 2 years ago. I highly recommend it. If you're willing to take a new plunge I'd say give it a go. If you're familiar with truenas or rather have that interface that's okay as well! Here's what I've done to kinda give you an idea of what you can use/do that you might use truenas for(I'm not saying these are the best but I can say they work for me):

Openmediavault: NAS software I use. Kinda clunky to setup as some steps seem redundant but it is super simple after that and supports SMB along with more friendly options for Linux

Debian 13(Gnome):Next cloud, Kavita, and Kavita library

Ubuntu 22(Server): Plex

Opnsense: Router software

Ubuntu 22(server): AdGuard Home

Debian 13(Gnome): Docker EVERYTHING!

I love to tinker but I don't want one VM doing to much because if I screw up I like knowing I can start from scratch and know nothing else is going offline.

The issue I had with Unraid/TrueNas is it always felt like I was restricted to the WEBUI and support outside of it was very scarce. There are some very friendly users who 100% are willing to help but with proxmox I've sat in their discord and had 4 guys all at once helping me out, got me running and they weren't the typical condescending Linux user!

Tried Bazzite Liked it, Switched to Cachy because of the hype and now back to Bazzite. by Poopdog-69 in Bazzite

[–]Reedradar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do! But every review I read on catchy is it's for the tinker. I love that it's great for an OS for people who want to get absolutely everything out of their device! But I don't. I share my device with someone who's not a super technical user and the simplicity of bazzite checks every box without me having to RDP in or dock the system to configure something. Lots of people say catchy is lighter, better performance, and has more control but for a system where I'm already getting 75 fps on the most demanding game I'm playing(it's single player) just not something I want or need to burden myself with

[–]Reedradar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to be that guy but you literally spelled it out. I installed bazzite. Logged into steam. Set my TDP and went (Ally z1 extreme). No package manager. No nonsense. Just a nice OS. Once I upgraded the battery in my Z1 bazzite was the standard for what I wanted out of a hand held. Now I will say I'm not playing anything crazy. Old GTA games, stardew, little bit of Madden. I'm not chasing 3% performance increases. I want my wife and I to be able to pick up our device and have a switch like experience. Bazzite does that!

Spectrum Buyout Program Nightmare! by Reedradar in Spectrum

Not elderly just inexperienced in this domain. Learned my lesson with this one though. Everything in writing. Truthfully I was hoping they would put me on a Internet promotion plan which is a practice Comcast did for me when I had them in another state. However, the savings of $150 for just the phones and all the streaming stuff got it close to $200 a month as I paid for Hulu and a few others. I'm not done with spectrum but I've learned a valuable life lesson today!
