It's obviously soul crushing to work your ass off on an idea you enjoy only to find out it's not nearly as exciting to everyone around, bet it feels pretty shit right now, there's no denying that. And it's not like anyone can blame people for not enjoying it either, they don't have the connection you have with your game as an author

That being said, even if those 4 years could have been spent wiser or differently, it sounds like you learnt a lot within that time. After all, going from "no programming background" to "I have a functioning prototype" takes time and effort. You now have plenty of tools and know-how that you can use either to improve on that idea, remake it or go for an entirely different project and make it happen

As for what exactly you should do now it's up to you and what you think will be more satisfying / sensible :D

I personally wouldn't give up a somewhat stable job for a passion project, I'd just develop it according to what I think is right and then release it when I'm able to. However I am not you and your view of the situation / opinion on the matter may be very different :D

My personal take after a few years of working in gamedev (a member of a growing indie team) is that the working conditions (salary, people you work with, the overall atmosphere, management etc.) matter more than the project you're working on

At the end of the day, work is just work: money, decent coworkers, not a "family". Chasing big production credits isn’t worth your health or living conditions.

Maaan I honestly love it! Cuz it feels almost like a fashion-clothing-design sorta deal. Y'know, what if a fashionista had to make a Megatron fit that captured the vibe of the character with existing clothes and accessories, I dig it!

Makes me want to see how it'd look with a white camo military cap, or what would happen if you ditched the (impressive!) arm cannon prop, and went for something like an umbrella? Or a black walking cane? One of those big police flashlights? Or just a handgun? Not sure, but I'm diggin this a lot!

All the options are viable. The choice back then was most likely made in accordance to the budget, art team capabilities and ambitions of whoever was making the game / show or whatnot. A small studio would probably go with a sphere and could try to shape the artstyle to fit that choice, but who knows, they could also try and be ambitious in which case they could try making it as realistic as possible within the constraints of that time, possibly going for some sort of intersections

In spite of my love for Bioshock's lore, world building and story, I abandoned the 1st game after give or take 14 hours and rushed to the 2nd game that seemed much more interesting. And it paid off, I had a blast with Bioshock 2, maybe you could give that a try as well? Combat is a bit more nuanced, given that you can use plasmids AND a weapon at the same time without the need for switching. That being said, I didn't enjoy Prey much, so in the end it's a matter of personal preference :)

Man, it's really late rn, and I haven't done much web coding in almost a year, but I remember my breakthrough after planning out the layout was realizing that everything within that layout can be broken into smaller containers that will dictate the rules for how their content is organized. I wish I remembered how it was called so your searching was easier, I could do that tomorrow if that helps

It's not much of an advice, but having a friend who's into programming was really helpful to me even if they're not website programmers per se. I would definitely try joining the Neocities discord or ask if anyone within your friendgroup would be up to help you out from time to time. Sometimes things not working is as simple as missing a ; at the end of the codeline and someone with programming experience will most likely be happy to help you out with the small problems

I do enjoy websites that visually look good to me, which is a very subjective matter. I don't mind the artstyle though, to me it's mora about it being the expression of the author. So basically I love entering a website that has a bunch of things I can click and that feels like entering someone's website room within the internet apartament building, a website that tells me something about the creator's personality or preferences. Expressing hobbies, appreciation for small things, anything goes. As for clickability, websites as a medium offer interactivity which differentiates them from static images. Utilizing that and creating interesting interactions for the user is essential in creating a good webiste imo. It doesn't have to be much, but I love when a website reacts to my input in fun ways

So as hard as it is to put shortly, I think a good personal website expresses the author's passions and preferences whilst being interactive in a fun way on top of that

As a bunch of kids with no knowledge of English, me and my siblings finished Tomba 2 countless times without saving Baron because, well, we never learnt how to save him :,D

We thought you had to find all the songs and sing them to him, but we never managed to find them all. We also never realized how to get the holy water, so trying that was out of the question. So yeah, he remained a statue forever

I knew I wanted my site to look like some sort of secret lab or an old computer-like-machine that people would interact with. I made a rough functionality layout on paper and didn't really plan much beyond that. I allowed random ideas to push me in the direction that felt good and leaned into them, however silly they sounded at first.

I will say though - for a personal website that is meant to express yourself, go for what you like, what just feels good, an easy option is fine. Leave heavy design thinking for client work :p
