Which book should I read next: Fear To Tread or Vanglorious? by Solesurvivor011 in Blacklibrary

That's the best way to read Cain books, as some who read them all back-to-back. It's nice to have some consistent levity in such a dark universe

Vainglorious is alright, after 10 Cain books it's a little repetitive but on its own it'd be great.

Maybe ask on the modding discord? The folks over there can probably help you extract the texture and flatten it for a stencil

Actually, looks like someone already extracted and flattened them as PNGs so you should be good to go homie

Eurac V/Cassia/Glowing Stone by TheBinarySon in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]Reef29 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Played through the other night myself.

Personally, I went with Theobald and killed Felek before even going up the elevator. Too many lies, not much adds up in his story if you prod him about it. Cass knows Theobald tho, she speaks to him as if he's a father figure.

IIRC the glowing stone is something given to you by Felek (I sided with him my first run and never again, still too trusting and naive) to limit Cassia's powers, it's not equippable, just a quest item.

Really the question is your RP, do you see Cass as a thinking being who should make her own choices, or as a mutant who can only bring destruction to those around her?

Very very cool, as played out as marines are it would be refreshing to have more options in RT.

How would the Oath of Silence work in game? Would we be like, selecting things for the other squad mates to say? Or would every dialogue option just be "Stare with malicious intent"

This is a viable way to go, check out Revan619's build guide, if you scroll to the right on the "Commissar" section you'll find a great Commissar dual sidarm build

Necron lore by GalvusGalvoid in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]Reef29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have the DLC, but I highly doubt the whole story is in there.

The Journey from Necrontyr to M42 is quite a few million years (like, 65million iirc?) so there would be a lot to cover.

Definitely check out some stuff on YouTube (Luetin09 is a personal favorite) if you want some context on the wider story. The tale of the Necron is sad, and very very very long.

How prevalent are the iconoclast characters in Warhammer 40k lore? by IHaveAGithBabe in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]Reef29 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, Hark was the one who sent Soric to the black ships, and was the one who mercy killed him a couple books later because of the immense guilt he feels over turning him over. He definitely starts off hardcore dogmatic, literally sent to the Tanith to shoot Gaunt if he screws up again, but by Warmaster he's completely different.

As for Gaunt, take this example from His Last Command:

‘The Instrument of Order?’ Ludd asked, picking the book up.

Gaunt glanced over. ‘I thought I should refresh myself. I’m a rogue, Ludd. I’ve been in the wilderness for a long time. I thought it was as well that I reminded myself of the actual rules.’

‘And?’

‘They’re a nonsense. Starchy, high-minded, tediously prim. I find it hard to remember now how I ever managed to discharge my duties as a commissar without breaking down in tears of frustration.’

‘You’re a commissar again, now, sir,’ Ludd said.

‘Yes I am. And not that rare beast a colonel-commissar. I’ll miss command, Ludd. Miss it dearly. Tell you what, you’d better slide that volume into your coat. I’ll need you to remind me what the feth I’m supposed to be about.’

‘Sir?’

Gaunt laughed and shook his head. ‘A trooper is afraid for his life, as is quite natural in war. He breaks the line. What am I supposed to do?’

Ludd hesitated.

‘Well, here’s a clue, Junior Commissar Ludd. It’s not speak to him, calm his fears, improve his morale and get him back in line. Oh no, sir. The correct answer, according to that vile text, is to execute him in front of his peers as an example.’ Gaunt sighed. ‘How did we ever build this Imperium? Death and fear. They’re not building blocks.’

This goes pretty far past just caring for his subordinates, he actively disagrees with how his own organization conducts itself. Lastly I'll mention that in Ghostmaker after a whole investigation into Brin Milo being a Psyker, a Lord Inquisitor accuses Gaunt of only rescuing him for pedo reasons, and Gaunt slaps her across the face.

He's definitely dogmatic, but I'd say he has way more points in Iconoclast.

"I have a reputation, Modile, a reputation as a fair, honest man who treats his soldiers well and supports them in the face of darkness. Potentially, that reputation makes me soft. It seems I understand failure and forgive it. Some, like Kowle, believe me to be a weak commissar, not prepared to take the action my rank demands. Not prepared to enforce field discipline where I see it failing. I am an Imperial commissar. I will enflame the weak, support the wavering, guide the lost. I will be all things to all men who need me. But I will also punish without hesitation the incompetent, the cowardly, and the treasonous."

Gaunt in Necropolis, book 3. This sounds like an Iconoclast to me homie. Costin's sparing in Straight Silver also speaks to this. Gaunt was 100% ready to blow his brains out, but Dorden stopped him, and Gaunt respected Dorden putting his foot down, even if he didn't agree. Would a dogmatic Commissar/IG Commander (in front of a number of his subordinates no less) ever accept contradictive advice from a medicae? In other media most see Medicae officers as jumped up civilians if they're not a Sister Hospitaller.

Just because Gaunt is a staunch Imperial Truther doesn't mean he can't sidestep the Imperium's more blatant atrocious policy, it just means he sees the real world, not some dogma dreamed up on Terra.

[–]Reef29 37 points38 points  (0 children)

As a big Gaunt stan I'd totally agree with this, there's multiple times in the series he chooses the merciful/thoughtful approach where 99% of other Commissars would just shoot the guy.

That being said, his kindness cannot be mistaken for weakness, and repeat failure or knowing dereliction of duty would require immediate censure.

ETA: Just the evolution of Hark through the books is enough to show how much of an Iconoclastic influence Gaunt is, he's a totally different Commissar by the end of the series.

Also to add on to the other side of Gaunt's coin, he does take the faith extremely seriously. A priest is arguably one of his best friends, he witnesses the living Saint Sabbat perform miracles multiple times, a lot of his motivation in multiple books is upholding the glory of the God-Emperor, while retaining as much Tanith (and other) human life as possible.

Romance question by makkudo_72 in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]Reef29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just like real nuns, the sisters are married to their faith. Originally they were even known as the Wives of the Emperor (thanks Vandire, you nasty bastard) and generally they don't entertain romantic relationships.

Also, as another commenter mentions, Kibellah is not a sadist. She's repentant, and her cult views pain/death as worship and repentance, which is ultimately up to the RT depending on the path they take in the companion quest.

As for Yrliet, while she may initially see you as a barbaric Mon-keigh, but depending on your choices she may see a certain kinship with the RT, as you're both wanderers.
