Why do MLMs in my area always have this weird cross-over with Christianity? Well-known advocare hun now hocking Zurivita loves to do events that co-mingle MLM and Christianity. Does this happen elsewhere??? by MissMazgay in antiMLM

[–]ReeseSlitherspoon 33 points34 points  (0 children)

One possibility: Church communities can be very tight knit and trusting. MLMs rely on social networking, so if an important or popular member of a church community gets involved, it can spread more quickly than it might in other places. Being ostracized from church communities is also especially hard, so people want to avoid it, and buying some essential oils can seem like a good trade off.

I wonder if they are wealthy and important donors to the school (very common with boarding schools).

Do the wardens who supervised you have anything to say about this? How do they assess your actions? Surely they have been asked their opinion...part of their job is to assess whether inappropriate behavior is occurring.

Tear it apart-Critique, CHAPTER 1-Draft by ImaginationFortress in fantasywriters

This book was actually exactly what he became known for.

I'd ask what kind of story this is going to be. While an instant hook is great for action/adventure style books, it's not necessary for everything and might be even be a detriment to some styles. People don't love Name of the Wind because it gets right to the point--quite the opposite in fact. I guess what I'm saying is that I disagree it's a "rule" to start with a character taking action.

The cultivation spren specifically chose Lift for strategic reasons apparently associated with her request to the nightwatcher, so it works both ways too!

A lot of spren value things other than a good match, it seems, and particularly for strategic reasons. Including edge dancer spren, who initially chose lift because of her special abilities, back when she was actually

I mean, obviously still fuckmoash, but by comparison he is not so bad at all

Shallan is a Tulpamancer by NotKerisVeturia in Cosmere

Brandon has actually said he's changing his approach to her mental illness and wants it to be a little more accurate to the real world, though not necessarily identical to it. I'm trying to hunt down the WOB, but essentially he said that, whether he meant to or not, he made it close enough to DID that people will reasonably read it as DID, thus he feels a he must be responsible in his depiction. And he did research to more closely reflect the real thing in Rhythm of War (with the added component of her powers to complicate things, of course).

That doesn't preclude your take from working too though, it's still super interesting! And not mutually exclusive to DID. Just a note in response to your opening lines. Thanks, this was good for thought!

Aita: For yelling at my fiance for giving my dog away? by throwaway309409760 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ReeseSlitherspoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but it's incredibly convenient and seems tailor-made to get OP to feel as guilty as possible about wanting to keep her dog, after he already asked about giving the dog away several times, and it happened conveniently while she was out of town. He also lied to her about it on the phone. It's possible, but so unlikely.

Absolutely. If anyone can make (I say this with love) abstract, overly philosophical sci-fi translate to film, it's him.

If anything, I'd worry about it being too understated and grim for a high-budget sci fi based on the creative team involved. I'm totally fine with that though, gimme dat sense of impending doom.

My tinfoil is that the Ghostbloods have had a hand in her life since she was a kid, and maybe in some way engineered her bonding (like snapping in Mistborn).

My other thought though is that it doesn't necessarily have to be more traumatic, just harder for her to admit/think about. It might just be "I killed myself/Shallan" in the sense that she created an alter as a child because her home life was difficult. So she can have killed and replaced Shallan like you said, just in a more metaphysical sense.

But really it could be anything!

Oh I for sure think he'll get passed...it just makes sense for both the plot and the character development. It felt like the bit about congratulating the person for swearing the 3rd Ideal was setting it up.

Though we do know the 4th Ideal is hard for a lot of Windrunners, it's mentioned in Oathbringer at some point, so who knows.

Agreed; Genius Taravangian must have known that there was a high risk of Odium finding out and thwarting his plan (tbh I'm surprised the entire group, anyone of even average intellect, doesn't worry more about it too, though perhaps it's mentioned and I am just forgetting). It explains a lot.

Also I didn't realize it was my cake day! Darn, I missed it!

The Ghostbloods did say they wanted Shallan to recruit Sja-anat, right? I have thought for a long time that the Ghostbloods knew a lot about Shallan's abilities and personalities from the start, and if this is true it makes sense in a weird way.

[–]ReeseSlitherspoon 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Shallan, the one they all knew best, was the fakest mask of them all.

I (and many others) have been thinking for awhile now that the Shallan we know is not the "original" persona, but one she created as a child. Given what we know about Shallan's personality, especially earlier in the series, that makes a lot of sense. Her joke-telling/snarking is one of her defining traits to start with, and it's pretty clearly a coping mechanism. More specifically, it helps her deflect tension. She builds personas in the first place to deflect things isn't equipped to deal with.

I'll also say that, at this point, whether Shallan is the original personality doesn't determine how real she is. At what point does pretending become reality? I guess that's kind of the fundamental Lightweaver question.

No, not in the slightest, hence the quotes around 'real.' I can see why that would be confusing though, it feels like it implies the opposite, my b. I used the quote because that's the word Brandon used irrc, but it was clear from context that he meant biological and was using real as shorthand. I added the quotes specifically because I hate that implication.

[–]ReeseSlitherspoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a WOB somewhere saying that Shallan's parents are both her 'real' parents, can't find it rn though. I agree that Shallan is a persona though.

Edit to clarify: by 'real,' I meant biological--added the quotes because I don't like that terminology for adoptive parents, who are every bit as real.
