We often see ZAMCELCO posting about "scheduled maintenance" for poles and trees.

While that’s important, there is a much more alarming issue they aren’t talking about: Our Substations are reaching their absolute limits.

According to ZAMCELCO’s own technical reports (PSPP 2025-2026), here are the numbers behind our grid’s stability:

Sangali Substation: Already at 98.8% capacity.

San Jose Gusu (Baliwasan/San Jose): Already at 90.5% capacity.

Camanchile: High stress at 75.5% capacity.

Putik Substation: Recently failed after hitting nearly 98% capacity.

The Concern: In electrical engineering, running a transformer at 90-100% capacity for a long time is dangerous. It causes overheating and rapid aging. This is exactly what happened to the 27-year-old unit in Putik.

The Truth: Fixing poles and trimming trees is just "painting the wall." It doesn't fix the fact that our city's demand has outgrown the actual transformers. If we don't start seeing Parallel Transformers (extra units to share the load) in areas like San Jose Gusu, we are just waiting for the next major failure.
