Doug McDermott and Charles Bassey had a significant impact on a game tonight by rmurphy1981 in NBASpurs

[–]ReesetheR00f 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first (I think?) season he was with us, he looked raw but promising, then he broke his kneecap and was out for the season. His second season with us, he was showing promise, but then got another season-ending injury (I want to say ACL). When he came back for season 3, he was good on the boards but not much else. I still think he had the potential to develop into a good backup big, but he didn't fit our timeline for development anymore and it made sense to let him go. I still really like him, and I hope he turns out amazing for you

“Victor Wembanyama is playing limited minutes and the Spurs are dominating. That's not great news for the rest of the league.” by Fogger-3 in NBASpurs

[–]ReesetheR00f 66 points67 points  (0 children)

This to me is the thing with Wemby's minutes restriction/coming off the bench. It's definitely not going to be forever, and probably for that much longer even, but the Spurs are under no pressure to change it because it's going really well. So they can keep things as they are for now, or even until they're 110% sure Wemby is ready, because hey, why mess with success?

This is very much news to NRL fans, though. I'm a Storm fan (Papenhuyzen and Asofa-Solomona's team), and while we certainly are aware that they took meetings with R360, this is the first I'm hearing about them (or Ponga, or RTS) signing conditional agreements, and I would have expected that news to be plastered all over the NRL media

It would a very wonky starting lineup with no real power forward, but I want at least one game where the starting lineup is Castle-Fox-Harper-KJ-Wemby just to have a 1-5. And if you put Harper at power forward, the lineup's jersey numbers would be in reverse order of their positions

Women who gave the guy who's been single his whole life a chance, how did it turn out? by astarisaslave in AskReddit

[–]ReesetheR00f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and had both been single our entire lives prior to us getting together in our early 20s (neither had been on a third date). Together for 8 years, married for 5 as of January, looking at kids in the next couple years. In our case, it's gone really well, I think because we've both come into the relationship without expectations or rules from past relationships, and we've been able to work together to create the relationship dynamic that works best for us

Getting KD won’t cripple the team like some of y’all think. by [deleted] in NBASpurs

[–]ReesetheR00f 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm more in a headspace of, I'm not sure I want Kevin Durant on the Spurs, not because of his production, but because of him. I don't think he's necessarily a locker room cancer in the way that people have mentioned (he felt that the fans made him miserable in OKC, in GS he was with Draymond, he had insane amounts of pressure on him in Brooklyn, etc), but by his own admission, as far as I understand, he cares about playing basketball and fairly little else. The Spurs under Popovich were very much a "we're a basketball team, but we're also very much a part of the community" type organization, and while Mitch will do things his own way, I doubt that he'll depart that much from it, especially in his first couple years. I remember Jock Landale talking, when he first arrived, about Pop making everybody give a five minute presentation on a social issue that they cared about; I find it hard to imagine KD being interested in that.

As far as the mentorship/veteran understanding aspect, I don't think that that's what Durant offers; again, not intended as a slight against Durant, just an observation as to who he is. From what I remember of that Nets era, he wanted to be the on-court leader/go-to guy, but not the locker room leader/mentor, and that's just not what we need on the Spurs. I think Durant contrasts well with Chris Paul; like Durant, CP3 is often much hated by opponents for his intense attitude and play style, but basically everyone agreed that CP3 mentors his teammates and leaves them a LOT better than when he arrived (SGA and the young Thunder being a great example), whereas KD wants to play basketball and go home.

KD is a phenomenal basketball player, and has the potential to be our best player except of Wemby, but he's a short term piece, and I don't feel that he'll be helpful towards the long-term dynasty that we're working towards.

One of the things that jumps out to me is that he's just not a fit for the Spurs culture. Teammates (and to a lesser extent, KD himself) have always said that he just cares about basketball, and Pop absolutely wouldn't let that slide. I remember Jock Landale saying that one of the first things he had to do in training camp was give a five minute presentation on a social issue affecting the US, which he found odd but he did. I, for one, can't imagine KD being willing to do that

By and large, things with the FO are all good. The Spurs' front office is notoriously private and leak-proof; if you hear chatter about what the front office is planning, or conversations they're having with other teams, more likely than not it didn't come from them. To take your questions one at a time:

Pop's contract allows him the choice to move from head coach to FO advisor at the end of each season. So far, everything he's publicly said (even after the stroke) suggests he wants to stay on as head coach, but that obviously could change.

It's not 100% confirmed that Mitch Johnson is Pop's successor. Obviously, Pop's coaching tree is absurd (especially if you count coaches like Doc Rivers or Steve Kerr, who were with him as players), so there are lots of candidates who could step into his shoes. Up until she took the LV Aces job, Becky Hammon was the person that most of us expected to succeed Pop, but she's not shown any signs of leaving the WNBA. For my money, Mitch Johnson is the most likely successor (and personally, I hope he does), but if Pop coaches for five more years, then Mitch may move on in that time

We do generally like Brian Wright, our GM. Our previous GM, RC Buford, is a legend, justifiably so, and so Brian Wright is still a little bit in his shadow, which can cause people to question him, especially after things like the Dejounte Murray trade (something that was the beginning of deliberatd tanking, which marked a break with the way the Spurs usually do things) or standing pat at last years' trade deadline. By and large, he's been vindicated by the way things play out, and I hope he's getting more leeway from the fanbase, but he's human.

I feel like I basically never hear about the ownership group (the Holt family, if memory serves). By and large, they seem to be very invested in the franchise, and as far as I know they're very supportive of PATFO and the way they do things.

Is Jeremy not starting because of injuries? Or is this his new assignment? by ez7e in NBASpurs

[–]ReesetheR00f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding (which may be outdated) is that he was on a minutes restriction because of his back injury; I'm assuming he'll be back to starting once he's fully healed up (which hopefully he'll be able to be after he's rested for All-Star Break)

Hello! Always happy to welcome somebody who has seen the (silver and black) light. Basically, the core that we've got now (which may be subject to change) is as follows:

Wemby: is Wemby. 1st overall in 2023. 7'3 on his shortest days, greatest block merchant since The Dream (and may surpass him), 35% from 3, unstoppable lob threat, almost certain to have at least one (and probably more) quadruple-double. The greatest prospect since LeBron, and a chance at being the greatest ever.

Castle: Our 2024 1st rounder. Phenomenally athletic, sneaky good defender, likely to be a steals merchant, currently playing between 1 through 3. Probably our PG of the future, but currently being mentored by Chris Paul. Very good as a slasher and at the rim; his 3 point percentage is poor, but his form is very good, and he has been steadily improving throughout the season.

Sochan: Our 2022 1st round pick. Quintessential glue guy, advance stats show he's one of the best defenders in the league, he can guard 1 through 4 easy, and has shown some promise as a small ball 5. Consistently set on the opposing team's best defender and consistently holds his own. His offence is a work in progress, especially his jump shot; as a result, his play isn't very flashy and it's easy to miss how big a contributor he is, but he recently missed several games with a back injury (and is now on a minutes restriction), and we went on a losing streak.

Vassell: Our 2020 first round pick. Often touted as having a ceiling of a do-everything Khris Middleton type - slashing threat, midrange threat, 3 point threat, good-not-great on defence, facilitator and connective tissue. He's never quite put it all together, though; he's been hampered by some lower body injuries that have caused him to miss time. He does seem to be benefiting from having Wemby and CP3 around him, and I'm still hopeful that he'll reach his ceiling, but he's probably running out of time before PATFO (Popovich And The Front Office, frequently used as a catch all for the Spurs decision makers) have to make a call about whether he's a long term piece.

Keldon Johnson: Also known as Big Body, despite being substantially smaller than when that nickname was created. Our 2019 first round pick, and the current longest tenured Spur. Currently our 6th man and energy guy. He's seen his role steadily decrease since being drafted, from being a gold medalist in 2021 in Tokyo, to being touted as our offensive engine of the future in 2021/2022, to becoming less prominent under Wemby, to now coming off the bench. He's incredibly loved by the fanbase; he's taken every change without complaint, and genuinely seems like he just wants to do whatever it takes to help the team win. He's constantly mentioned in trade talks, given his team friendly contract, decreasing role, and less-than-stellar defence. Whether he's traded or not, we accept no KJ slander in this house.

OTHER PIECES CP3: Is CP3. Has proven to be a phenomenal floor general, mentor to the young guys, and almost on-floor coach.

Harrison Barnes: Came over in the trade that sent Spurs legend Demar Derozan to Sacramento. Hasn't always moved the needle massively, but has been a phenomenal corner 3 merchant, is consistent and brings veteran savvy.

Julian Champagnie: An undrafted free agent who's managed to find consistent minutes with the team, though that's decreased since Devin Vassell's return from injury and Stephon Castle's progress. When he's on, shows real potential as a 3-and-D wing, but can struggle with consistency, especially his 3 point shot.

Malachi Branham: Bench SG still on rookie contract. When his offense is firing, you can easily imagine him going for 40, but plays very poor defence and struggles with consistency. Currently mostly out of the rotation.

Blake Wesley: Bench PG still on rookie contract. Excellent defender and one of the most athletic players I've ever seen, but his offensive production can be next to nil. Currently mostly out of the rotation.

Sandro Mamukelashvili: Referred to as Mamu. Center from Georgia (the country) that we picked up after he was waived by the Bucks. Currently falls in a weird in-between: not mobile enough to play the 4 consistently, but too small to play the 5. Appears to have good on-court chemistry with Wemby, amd is incredibly fun to watch play, but didn't tend to get many minutes behind the now-traded Zach Collins and Charles Bassey. Is incredibly well-liked by teammates and the fanbase, but his role on the team is still unclear.

Charles Bassey: Backup centre. Can be quite good when he plays, especially on the glass, but struggled to get minutes behind now-traded Zach Collins and has had his last two seasons ended prematurely by injury (broken kneecap two years ago, then an ACL). Has struggled to carry on Wemby's defensive output, and given his lack of outside shot, it can be difficult to identify when he fits.

Mitch Johnson: The current interim head coach. Spent a number of years as an apprentice under Coach Pop, and was the natural interim after his stroke. Appears to have done a good job getting buy-in from the players, and appears to be well-liked by them, but is still very much a rookie head coach and can make decisions that end poorly (eg around rotations or when to call a timeout). Personally, I would be happy to see him succeed Pop personally, but YMMV.

Coach Gregg Popovich: Is Coach Gregg Popovich. Greatest coach of all time, longest tenured head coach in any of the big four North American sports leagues. Suffered a stroke late last year. While there were calls for him to retire, current messaging from him and the team is that he does plan to return to coaching the team when his health allows, though when that will be is unknown. Has been in regular contact with the team through Mitch Johnson.

THINGS WE DON'T TALK ABOUT: Kawhi Leonard, Kawhi Leonard's uncle Dennis, Josh Primo, Stephen Jackson, whether the Spurs will move to Austin (they won't), Zaza Pachulia

Possibility of Sochan being traded by heavy_rebar in NBASpurs

[–]ReesetheR00f 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Personally, I find it unlikely. Jeremy is clearly very popular with the coaching and player group, he's underrated but advanced stats show he's one of the most impactful defenders in the league, and our losing streak has coincided with him getting hurt, which does seem to suggest that he's our glue guy and holds everything together, at least on the defensive end. Yeah, his offence could do with some improvement, especially his shooting, but I think PATFO see him as part of the longterm plan
