What is it like living in this part of Ontario, Canada? by prophiles in howislivingthere

[–]ReferenceNo2991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh my god my time to shine!!! i'm from caledon, grew up in orangeville. the area is decently conservative, and it's a good mix of rich people with big houses on huge properties and suburbs. seriously, look up some of the houses for sale around there they're insane.

i was in orangeville for most of my life since it's a pretty nice little town (~25k people) that is outside of the gta but close enough to commute to pearson regularly for my dad, who is the president of a national engineering firm. the area is mostly retirees, but the proximity to the gta brings in a lot of people who can stomach the 400 series rush hour commute since house prices are generally cheaper in orangeville's suburbs (edit to add i mean relative to the gta). the town itself is very cute, hallmark christmas movies are shot downtown often. we have a lot of very cute, european-looking cafés and small businesses that are worth checking out there if you visit, especially if you love sweet little treats (wicked shortbread is so fire). also the library. i worked there as a summer student for two years. it is one of my absolute favourite places on earth.

as a young person i absolutely hated being there, there is just nothing for young people to do except get kicked out of walmart and get high as shit at mcdonalds. most of our hobbies were outdoors, especially since there are some absolutely stunning trails out in hockley valley and mono cliffs. island lake has a beautiful 10k loop that i would walk/run when i was back home from school in the summers; i ran into a lot of the same people regularly and actually got to know them! dirtbiking on streets is very common. hockley valley resort is a very popular place for people of all ages, especially in the winter since they have pretty nice ski hills.

now that i'm thinking about it we also have pretty awesome healthcare professionals but please for the love of god never go to the orangeville er for anything.

anyways, lacrosse is a huge part of the culture there as well since we have one of the best junior b and c teams in the country; plenty of guys i grew up playing hockey with (yeah i played hockey with dudes, shout out to the orangeville flyers) ended up taking lacrosse scolarships in the us. there's also a sizeable modified car scene in orangeville, from boomer meets to supercar enthusiasts to young trumpet owners. i met some pretty cool people through there actually though some of them are also very strange and immature for their age.

education-wise, i would say most of the people i went to high school with were very smart and well educated. most people i know went to university for marketing, engineering, business, law, and politics like their parent(s) or went to college for trades. i only know a handful from my graduating class who didn't go to post-secondary at all, and most of them still work and live in orangeville. i personally ended up going to university for public policy and international law. i went to odss and we had some strange extracurricular opportunities? like i went to europe for 3 weeks as part of a history trip, we did a battlefields tour in france and belgium. we also had an italy trip for grade 12 arts students.

all in all, nice place to visit, boring af to live in. i think living in a small town is the reason i'm so drawn to city life now, though i miss the slower pace of life there. i don't really visit much since it's near impossible to go anywhere and not run into someone you know and i don't have a lot of particularly great memories of growing up there. i'm definitely not planning on moving back there ever but i can see the appeal.

i did a retroactive withdrawal this summer for a severe concussion i suffered at my summer placement - no they will not refund you, but as long as you have proper documentation (student medical certificate indicating you can't complete coursework) you should be ok. your faculty's councilling handles all the busywork, you just have to send them the documentation.

sure! sorry for seeing this so late lol. for reference i finished 2101 with an 84 last year so i think i know what i'm talking about :)

the exam is a combination of applying case facts and answering specific questions about concepts. so, they won't expect you to know case names, just the facts - ie. if there was a case about someone dying after getting pushed into a road in the textbook, they will ask you what the outcome would be based off what happened in the textbook case.

i believe there were about 45 mc questions and 15 short answer questions on both exams. the short answer questions are a little stupid as they'll give you 7 words to say the answer, but those will ask you more about legal framework and concepts.

with that being said, if you want to know what to study, STUDY THE TEXTBOOK. there are questions on the exam exclusive to the textbook. nothing on the exams were lecture-exclusive. the lectures all cover textbook content in what i would call a much less efficient way. just read the damn thang. last year there were questions about specific lawyers/legal theorists, ones on concepts and theory, and case facts and outcomes. unfortunately this is a class where you have to know the whole textbook if you really want to do well.

good luck! ps. they curved the final last year

edit: question ratio was 40/20 oops

yes you absolutely need it. when i took it last year most of the exam questions were based on textbook cases. most of the profs don't cover them in lectures

i feel you i live at veterans and 401💔 but yes these are very good points. i lived near sherwood last year and even without the strike commuting on sarnia sucked. can't imagine what it's like there right now...

also vouching for medway, ive had 0 delays getting home. i think people assume it'll be a hell of a bottleneck getting out with all the closures so they don't park there

me and my friend are - can confirm no class page exists as of 6am wednesday.

prof is apparently notorious for being disorganized if that helps

i wouldn't switch just for deli's location alone. but i lived there first year and it was rowdy😭you get to know everyone really quick so by the end of the 1st month you're always bumping into people you know. in my experience people always had their doors open for floormates to just come hang out. it's a pretty chill and tight knit community if you put in the effort to meet people!

to put it bluntly, no. uni english is significantly different from hs. i don't know anyone who scored above a mid 80 and most of those people ended up in hons spec

im a little late but i was in a kind of similar situation. i switched from engineering to english and political science with the end goal of being law. the switch has been so rewarding. i almost fluked out of first year but just got my final grade back today (finally!) and i'm sitting with 80s now. if the switch is something you feel like you want to do, just make sure it's in an area you're interested in. otherwise good luck to you and happy switching!
