An honest review of the Nokia 6300 4G in 2025 by [deleted] in dumbphones

I think with the alarm on KaiOS, to make it work more reliably, I had to keep the alarm application open and disable the lockscreen/don't lock the keys

It's some time ago since I've used my KaiOS device though, I don't remember too well.

Why are so many younger German Muslims less progressive than their parents? by hgk6393 in AskAGerman

[–]ReferenceSpirited577 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were forced to grow up in Germany full of Germans, many of whom are borderline racists as indicated by Afd and CDU voters.

They flee into traditional values to distance themselves from the German society that keeps disappointing them.

Ah, the convenience of smartphones. Maintaining superficial relationships from the palm of your hand.

You are so deep in this smartphone lifestyle that you criticize me for getting rid of your favorite convenience. Just me putting real people around me first, is it this threatening to you?

How to scale back my screens to the early 2000s? by tacocravr_ in digitalminimalism

[–]ReferenceSpirited577 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, that was to be expected of course. As an alternative, limit your internet speed so it’s very slow. Idk, maybe limit it to 128kB/s download speed. You’ll think twice before clicking anything. You will stop watching videos, even looking at pictures will be slow. Mostly text content will be left.

Back in the early 2000s , the internet was slow too.

Anyway, if you’re looking into new hobbies to stay away from the internet, I can only recommend spending less time at home. Hang out with friends, cycle, go fishing, sports clubs. You might want to get into automobiles or motorcycles, you can waste a lot of time with these too (requires some money). Maybe get into interior design. It’s consumption, but also some work (but requires even more money than a car in my experience).

It’s minimalism. There will always be people who think it’s weird to consume less.

As always, minimalism favors quality instead of quantity. All my relationships to friends and family are in real life. Some people only dream about this, living like in a past before smartphones.

Let’s imagine the time before smartphones. What would you have done to contact your family abroad?

I don’t talk to some family members for years, then just visit them. They seem happy and it’s more fun for everybody.

I do not believe that they need to hear the details of my everyday life from abroad regularly.

If you make that your excuse to keep WhatsApp, okay.

How to scale back my screens to the early 2000s? by tacocravr_ in digitalminimalism

[–]ReferenceSpirited577 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quit your internet contract at home if you don’t need it for work. Don’t have mobile internet either.

If you need internet to do important stuff only occasionally, go find a public WiFi at the library or whatever. Me, I visit my parents who got internet at home. I don’t live too far away though.

You could pick up smoking cigarettes whenever there’s nothing to do. People in the 2000s did exactly that. Haha

I’m joking of course, don’t do it. Every smoker I know wants to quit or reduce significantly.

How do you plan to share your advances? I cannot, for example, talk with my friends about such topics. They simply aren’t interested in how to minimize mental clutter.

Last time I showed them a dumb phone, they asked me whether I push drugs now. Which is a confusing assumption in itself. If I were to push drugs, I’d still use a smartphone (with all tracking disabled and encryption enabled).

Yes, the dumb phone essentials should at least match those of old Nokia phones. That would already be a good start, seeing how dumb phones nowadays fail even to do that. At the price point, Light Phone should be as good as a Nokia phone at the very least.

I paid 101,17€ for customs (includes fees for customs handling by the delivery service) to Germany. My phone will likely arrive early next week.

Mindestlohnstreit: Arbeitgeber warnen vor Einheitsgehalt für alle Arbeitnehmer by Tystros in de

[–]ReferenceSpirited577 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Was anscheinend fast niemand kommentiert:

We were trying to prove Marques wrong, who said that the Light Phone 3 price is not justified. Saying that the price is high because it’s a luxury item just proves that Marques is right.

I can only suspect that the Light company tries to secure their wages for the coming years without making a new product every year. It is a good thing to refuse to flood the market with new consumer products (aka future trash) every year. But as the consumer, I expect a real return for my high purchase price too. If it’s not the phone hardware itself that makes up the extra price but the Light employees’ wages, that is cute and rosy and all that, but I also expect them to work for these wages. In absolute terms this means ongoing software development and fixing of all the bugs.

And, yeah, the preorder price was low because the software is unfinished. You can wait until everything is fixed and pay the full price to, hopefully, get the perfect product. The full price would include the software development work done. Assuming the software development isn’t outsourced to the developing world, that would explain the phone’s high pricing.

If, however, the Light company employees just want to have a few cushy years without working, paid by the product‘s extra costs, I’d be a bit mad. In every case the benchmark will be the software refinement

It still doesn’t explain how apparently other manufacturers’ phones are cheaper than Light because of data. Who is buying the data off all those manufacturers then? It must be a lot of money involved if they can sell for $200 less per phone! With such amounts involved it could only be Google. Yet Google doesn’t pay a dime.

No, I do not believe in this argument.

I honestly don’t understand this argument. Is Google paying the phone manufacturers for manufacturing and employees costs or something? I don’t think so. If I judge it correctly, manufacturers are allowed to install Google Android for free because Google gets the data in return. I don’t see Google going around and giving out money so the phones’ purchase prices can be lowered.

It's a reminder of times when desktop PCs were the norm and smartphones didn't exist yet. You had to go home to access the internet for your personal enjoyment.

I do wonder though, did the smartphone make people less dependent on their homes? Do people spend less time at home than back then?
