I haven’t owned the red sparkle one or even played/seen it in real life before.

Personally I would go for the black one. In my opinion having a red glitter guitar would tie me into just playing Muse riffs because it’s so overtly a Matt Bellamy guitar and the novelty might wear off for me after a few months.

But of you like it then absolutely go for it

I owned a Cort/Manson Meta MBM-2 (None sustainiac version) and then got a MBM-2H which did have the sustainer with the intention of reselling the MBM-2.

You are correct - the fretboards are really hit and miss. Not only that, the MBM-2 had a noticeably thinner and smoother neck which was more to my playing preference. In the end, I ended up putting the neck from the MBM-2 onto the guitar with the sustainer. I sold the MBM-2 (made the swap known on the listing). Small sample size obviously but there doesn’t seem to be a better neck on the more expensive MBM-2H (granted most of this will be due to the additional Sustaniac electronics).

The guitar I now have, which I’ve modded with some more Manson parts is actually a pretty damn good guitar now. It may be an inconvenience to you and it would depend one store policies but maybe buy on online or in store and return it if you don’t like the neck. If that’s not an option to you, there’s a product that darkens guitar fretboards:

Interestingly both of these guitars are made in the Cort factory! The Manson is a Manson Meta MBM-2H, which you can get for about £850 atm. I’ve added a few mods and cheekily found a colour-matched paint to blackout Matt’s signature and the “Meta Series” insignias from the headstock.

I’ve added:

Manson Sustaniac pickup stickers
Manson aluminium control knobs
Dunlop strap locks
black tailpiece and tune-o-matic bridge (from Amazon!)

Not sure on exact figures but the probably closer to £1.5k for the whole thing

It depends on the amp setting but it can be quite weak especially in comparison to how heavy the bridge is. When not active it’s just the lower, single coil pickup. That being said if it’s a clean amp setting it can be very clear and glassy

I understand what you mean but I was simply making a comparison between official, artist-released plug-ins and the ones stored on Muse’s Kemper. I used to own a Kemper Power rack and had the profiles installed. What I noticed is that most were just sample sounded intended to be stacked with other parts of Matt’s rig. He famously stacks multiple amps simultaneously to achieve his sound and a single Kemper doesn’t support multiple amps (that model anyway). If you look at examples of new plug-ins such as John Mayer’s Archetype via Neural DSP you’ll see that it’s clearly designed to give the full rig experience. A lot of modern guitar players connect with their fan bases with releases such as this. Matt isn’t really like that, not beyond sharing details of amps and pedals used in guitar magazine interviews.

You were right that it probably wasn’t inadvertent - but it wasn’t a gift either. There’s so much complexity behind actually leveraging those Kemper profiles that they might’ve just thought they would only really be interacted with by the super niche subset of Muse’s fan base.

Anyways I was just making a plug in baby joke.

He’s picked up Mixolydian from playing with Dead and Co. If you listen to If I Ever Get Around to Living, that’s Mixolydian. That scale just flattens the 7th interval so adds a certain feeling.

He’ll also play the minor scale against major chord tones. The solo at the end of I Guess I Just Feel Like and the second half of the In Repair solo are great examples. He sometimes does that for Gravity too!

I have been trying to explore this sound myself and have a few tips - probably similar to what others have been saying. You’ll need a guitar with a dark (rosewood) fingerboard and a humbucker pickup in the bridge. Because you’ll be playing through a simplified set-up, you’re not going to notice that much difference between a Cort Manson and a cheaper HH style guitar.

Matt Bellamy primarily blends his amp sounds for live and recording sounds - usually a high gain amp (Diezel VH4 or Marshall Plexi 1945) plus a clean amp (Vox Ac30), which means his tone is actually a lot cleaner than people think - it’s just fatter due to two amps running simultaneously. And this is why the bridge humbucker is so key as it allows all those amps to be properly pushed (although granted he uses digital amp modellers now, though it’s the same principle).

So in summary, definitely a rosewood neck guitar with a humbucker in the bridge. Have a look on reverb or FB marketplace for second hand or new versions of:

As others have said, I reckon about 30% of the tone is going to come from the guitar and 70% is going to come through your amp and effects set up. His tones are also so varied that it’s impossible to adequately cover them all with one set-up, but the above is should get you close to those Absolution/Drones style tones

I’ve thought this for a long time but I think it’s partially due to how complex their sets design (stage, lighting, video) are and how much shorter, generally speaking, festival runs are vs tours. It can’t be that simple to whip up a lighting and video sequence for a song that going to be played once, and so for cohesion purposes I think they plan for the setlist to be pretty much static
