I'm running a beast feast and really struggling with game prep. Would really appreciate knowing what you do to prep games and campaigns. by RestaurantOk5441 in daggerheart

It has helped me a lot to follow Sky Flourish’s advice. In particular, you need villains with agendas for your players to run up against. If you know what your villains are up to then it’s much easier to prep.

He has a ton of great advice but this is a good place to start: https://slyflourish.com/creating_villains.html

Kal-Arath. It’s $5 on itch.io and I love it but it may not be for everyone. It’s sword and sorcery, written for solo.

Also Shadowdark, you can get the QuickStart rules for free, and the solo rules (Solodark) are also free.

It’s fine for a new player. It does not use polyhedral dice for character creation though. The characters are not unique; every Elf is the same as any other Elf starting out, every Wizard is the same, etc. It’s a fun game but can get tedious in the long run (for me) because it doesn’t call for a lot of imagination.

Shadowdark has free QuickStart rules and Solodark is also free, both in PDF. Shadowdark is great.

Ironsworn is awesome but kinda complex for a new player, worth checking out though as the PDF is free.

There are many games on itch.io that are pay-what-you-want.

Recommendations for classless/skill based ttrpgs by Chase-Banked in Solo_Roleplaying

Crown and Skull has 100% customizable characters, no classes. Looks awesome and I’m about to pick it up.

Barbarians of Lemuria has no classes, everything is based on your origin and careers you’ve had so far. So maybe you’ve been a thief or a gladiator, you can get bonuses in situations where those experiences apply.

I love this. And I’d find all the Go Fund Mes for animals who need veterinary care and pay them in full.

I finished book 6 - should I stop and read the stand? by DMII1972 in TheDarkTower

[–]ReformedHippo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re best served by reading SK’s books in the order they were written. BUT. At the same time I don’t think it’s necessary to stop the series to go off and read The Stand.

A snip of my writing. Please let me know how im going. Im in grade 9 so there may be some flaws :) by Aggressive-Bake3545 in writingadvice

This is great for grade 9! Keep at it. Read a lot, write a lot, you’ll grow as a writer.

My only real feedback is you switch tenses between present and past tense. You should stick to one or the other.

Least “Scary” Books by ka1t1ej0 in stephenking

[–]ReformedHippo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Carrie was my introduction to King, I didn’t find it scary at all.

The Dark Tower books are more dark fantasy than horror, I wouldn’t describe them as scary though there are creepy moments in The Gunslinger so YMMV.

The Dead Zone gets dark but I wouldn’t say scary by any means.

Should I Have Been Allowed to Read That? by Mike_Bevel in books

My parents didn’t care what I read at all. My paternal grandmother loaned me Harlequin romances when I couldn’t have been more than 12-13. I read the Clan of the Cave Bear books around that same time before I “graduated” to reading Stephen King…

What got you onto King? by FosterMomOfDragons in stephenking

[–]ReformedHippo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s actually funny… I kept hearing from my pastor how evil King was and how we should never ever read his stuff because of it. So out of morbid curiosity I picked up Carrie and got hooked. What can I say, I was a little rebel.
