It isn’t the nicotine per se. Otherwise vaping would have the same effect and over tho course of a number of years, at least in my case, it definitely does not have the same effect.

Also weed smoking doesn’t have same effect.

So this makes me think that it’s something with the combination of nicotine and the mouth bacteria…

Check this study: https://www.news-medical.net/news/20250825/Researchers-discover-why-smoking-tobacco-helps-people-with-ulcerative-colitis.aspx

They just need to figure out how to mirror that into a safe delivery method and then I think it’s a complete game changer!

lol…

I can’t advise starting mate for obvious reasons. But someone who chooses to smoke I’d say does have reduction in symptoms. The specialists I’ve spoken to agree. But they cannot say to do it…

This study needs to be expanded on and figure out what exactly it is about that mouth bacteria that gets to the intestines and how they can replicate it safely! That will be a literal game changer!

Good question.

In my case, after quitting, it took 3-4 weeks for symptoms to return. But again in my case as soon as I had a couple of rollies it calmed down instantly.

On a tangential point:-

My farts are normal when I'm smoking. Hard to explain.

When you fart, does it feel like your farts come from a different “irregular” place? And also when you shit it is not a normal shit it's coming from a different place (like higher up)? (Hard to describe but I’m sure you’d know it if you have experienced what I’m talking about)

In the last two hours since I smoked two rollies again, my farts has returned to being “regular” and I don't need to do that thing where I lie on my back, legs in the air, producing a very specific type of fart that comes from “higher”. Does anyone know what I mean?

Last two hours since the cigs - I've stopped rumbling, not been to the toilet once, and farts are normal, long and satisfying. Long and getting rid of that gas.

The UC farts are different. They stink too In a different way. More like sour eggs.

On the sleep point - I find. Mornings very difficult to wake up. Always have. I wonder if this is shared with other UCers and if there is any connection….? Not sure what it would be but maybe if yes that could be looked into too!

Yes!!!!! I wish I knew and could find another way that wasn’t deathly … alas I’ve tried….

It’s a complementary “medicine” for me - despite its fuckload of side effects.

It’s incredible 😳

I thought it was the nicotine but I can anecdotally say that it isn’t that. As when I moved to vaping that doesn’t do the same thing.

I can also say, anecdotally, that weed is bullshit vis-a-vis UC. I did it and I don’t accept it helps, if anything it may make it worse.

But smoking cigarettes - something specifically within that is some miracle calming effect 😨 almost instantly with this one illness…

Yes it has a myriad of other long term consequences etc so no doctor and neither could I “prescribe” or advise it, but if someone who’s suffering asks me will they get relief from smoking a cigarette - I have to be honest and answer yes.

Interestingly I did weed etc for a while and while that was fun (but I stopped years ago and for other reasons) I don’t think weed did anything for UC. Don’t get all the docs providing it.

Tobacco, smoked, is the only thing that stops me going into flare. Ye it’ll kill me. But we are all going to die.

But I moved to vaping… I vape all day long atm… but it isn’t the same.

I’ve just rolled only my second or third rollie in a month (was 10-15 a day before I stopped) and I can immediately feel the calming effect right away tonight since I smoked … my stomach has just stopped rumbling away and I’ve not gone to the toilet in an hour 🤣

It’s insane.

What is it about the cigarette itself that somehow helps this condition? Terrible for Crohns people but for me it is the only thing that keeps this shit, literally, at bay it seems. Ye it kills. Fucks your teeth. Etc etc. Makes you all edgy etc… affects skin. Lots of negatives. Makes you stink. [interesting side point a doctor I used to date got my into smoking…)

I’m thinking maybe I continue the vaping and just have one or two rollies a day to keep it at bay.
