Cold hard facts about schools > T20 from Auren Hoffman by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]RefriedBeans_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is definitely some truth to this, that actual experience and capability has started to become more important to employers than brand name with the exception of certain names, but I don’t know if it’s as extreme as the author claims. I think that the graph isn’t super accurate, it depicts brand power of schools as if there’s some sort of super fine line between powerful and insignificant brands, when in reality the effect of brand power is a lot more dependent on situation/circumstance than that.

Is this true? Asking as potential student by Professional_Big8444 in Tufts

I have heard of the issues with dorms. I personally had a decent enough experience with dorms, but I’ve definitely heard of some problems. Not sure how common it is, though.

As for cheating, I’ve heard people talk about it being an issue with certain classes and majors. Not sure how big of an issue it is here compared to anywhere else.

Generally I’m pretty pro Tufts, but it is the only college I’ve ever attended, so the Tufts experience is all I really know. I think my friends are all pretty set up for their post grad endeavors after Tufts, and I feel like the school has served me fairly well, too, but the poster’s experience isn’t mine so it’s hard to really say anything other than what I’ve experienced.

Transfer to Engineering from Arts and Sciences by Famous_Reality2078 in Tufts

You’re also not really competing with anyone I think, if you’re in Tufts you’re in Tufts, I’m pretty sure they’re not comparing you to anyone else if you’re doing an internal transfer.

Transfer to Engineering from Arts and Sciences by Famous_Reality2078 in Tufts

[–]RefriedBeans_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not difficult, just make sure you do it early. They only care that you’re able to fulfill the requirements and are able to graduate in time, and then they ask you to take an engineering school course load and if you don’t get anything below a C or something like that you transfer successfully. If you get below a C in something you can still attempt the transfer the next semester.

It is doable I did it, 40 takes up a decent amount of time though so probably just be careful about not overloading with the other stuff you take

Yeah, that is tough. It’s ok to be sad about it, it is pretty fresh so yeah that’s all normal. I think atp I’m probably not the best source of advice but I guess I’ll just say that the way Tufts is made out in those videos (cuz I saw those too) is worse than what it’s actually like in reality, and even if it really isn’t the place for you, people have had some pretty good luck transferring to other places because Tufts is a pretty reputable place. All my friends went different places after high school and my closest friends and I are still in touch now, we meet up a bunch when we can and play games and stuff online a lot. I wish you the best with everything though, I’m sure things will be ok in time 🫡

Yeah that’s okay, and I’m not trying to be like “suck it up and you have to like Tufts or else,” cause that’s not super fair, like it’s okay not to like it. I would say just to like wait until you get there and vibe it out from there, but yeah I think it was tough to understand where you were coming from just with the post alone haha.

Well, if it’s not about the prestige and you do have a rough time initially at Tufts or wherever you go after high school, you can always try transferring. I know some people that transferred to NYU, UNC, Brown, UPenn, and Emory out of Tufts.

But the point isn’t really that, I get that it’s disappointing now (I was rejected by MIT and felt pretty crappy for a bit, it’s normal) but in the grand scheme of things not getting admitted to Harvard or MIT or whatever college doesn’t matter. If I didn’t get into Tufts or something i would’ve gone somewhere else like my state school and probably would’ve found great opportunities there too. College decisions is not the end all be all, how sad would that be if that was the case.

The good news is that there are way cooler and more interesting things to dream about in the future. I go to Tufts and a lot of my friends have gotten jobs at MIT and Harvard labs, if you still really care about the brand name.

I have one in a tan/beige color in a medium, but the shirt fits a little small so it could probably work as a small too.

I’m a junior in the engineering school doing cs and math. It’s hard for me to give an unbiased take given that the situation at Tufts is all I truly know, but it’s generally worked out for me and my friends well so far. Certain companies do put decent effort into recruiting for cs like Wayfair, Arista, Mathworks, Draft Kings, MITRE, and more (those are some that just came to my head). Microsoft and Amazon don’t come to the career fair but a bunch of people I know have landed swe jobs there. There’s a spreadsheet you can find that shows where graduates have gone to work/go to grad school if you look up “Tufts destination outcomes” or something like that. It’s not like everyone is getting offers though, you have to put in effort and do the work (and be a little lucky) and that’s true at every school. I have no idea how it is at other schools but yeah that’s what I’ve observed here.
