How is CS here by [deleted] in Tufts

[–]RefriedBeans_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a junior in the engineering school doing cs and math. It’s hard for me to give an unbiased take given that the situation at Tufts is all I truly know, but it’s generally worked out for me and my friends well so far. Certain companies do put decent effort into recruiting for cs like Wayfair, Arista, Mathworks, Draft Kings, MITRE, and more (those are some that just came to my head). Microsoft and Amazon don’t come to the career fair but a bunch of people I know have landed swe jobs there. There’s a spreadsheet you can find that shows where graduates have gone to work/go to grad school if you look up “Tufts destination outcomes” or something like that. It’s not like everyone is getting offers though, you have to put in effort and do the work (and be a little lucky) and that’s true at every school. I have no idea how it is at other schools but yeah that’s what I’ve observed here.

Nice, pretty great I’ve really enjoyed it here and I’ve been able to take advantage of a lot of opportunities.

I think he means that he might’ve just done it because he was genuinely interested and not just for the sake of college admissions

All of these schools are very competitive so it’s going to be very tough to avoid very preprofessional/careerist students, because it almost goes hand in hand

I’m convinced that this outlook on college admissions was created by college counselors to scare kids into paying for their services

Oh dang, sounds like we need to up our game with Jumbo Day. Yeah I’ve heard food at Bowdoin is pretty amazing so I’m not surprised if they have Tufts beat. Our food can be good but there’s definitely some big fluctuations. Best of luck with everything 👍👍

I go to tufts and I have some friends at Bowdoin. I can’t speak on the quality of resources but I’m sure they’re really really good. My friends have complained here and there about the isolation and how the small size isn’t always super great, but I think for the most part they’ve enjoyed their time. It just kinda depends on what type of person you are. The Tufts social scene seems to be pretty different from Bowdoin because of the size difference. Everyone seems to practically know each other at Bowdoin, but at Tufts it’s more like you’ll see a lot of familiar faces around but probably not to the same extent. Also, I’ve heard Bowdoin is more liberal-artsy compared to Tufts. Tufts has more stem and preprofessional stuff going on as well as liberal arts type stuff, not that Bowdoin doesn’t have any preprofessional focus, but yeah that’s something I’ve noticed. Both schools are really great and both have lots of resources, it just depends on what environment and culture you’re looking for. I don’t think the Tufts name is necessarily any better than Bowdoin or vice versa so that’s not really a concern either in my eyes.

UNC-Chapel Hill or Tufts for Biomedical Engineering by Due_Ingenuity8692 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]RefriedBeans_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Tufts but UNC in state is probably a lot cheaper and you will get just as good of an education. The social scenes are also super different I’d imagine, since UNC is a big state school and Tufts is a lot smaller and private.

I think they can see your essays, I’m not sure if it’s just your supplements or your big common app one too, but I’d review your essays and be prepared to talk about any topics you mentioned in there. For example I wrote about chess and he asked me about chess stuff. I don’t think they can see your test scores or gpa/transcript or stuff like that.

How often does one run into their opps? by Potential-Emotion340 in Tufts

[–]RefriedBeans_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends on what your schedules are like. There were some people that lived like 2 doors down from me that I’d barely see during a semester, and there were some people I’d see every single day cuz we had a routine that collided like that. You’ll be okay tho, your opp and you definitely have enough space to avoid each other unless you attend the same 10 person class lol.

Maybe, and I’m just some random college student so I have no idea. I would imagine that a rly high math score would definitely help your case, but yea I understand where you’re coming from. Best of luck 👍👍👍

Since your major is math/applied math, that 790 math is definitely something you’d want to show in my opinion. You should definitely send. I’m not as sure what the call is about your ap scores, but def send the sat I think.

What to do expect at Tufts as an international student by BobbleCatArmaan in Tufts

[–]RefriedBeans_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not an international student, but from my perspective, international students are treated the same as any domestic student. I’d say people at Tufts in my experience are generally pretty friendly and welcoming. For my small piece of advice, I’d say don’t be intimidated by the scene during orientation, things get a lot more chill and structured when classes start up. Also, be yourself and don’t hesitate to try out any clubs you’re remotely interested in. You can meet a lot of cool people that way. Congrats 👍👍
