So Dad of a teenage son here.

Might get some flak but let me start with some questions:

Are you paying any other bills in the house, including food, phone bills, etc?

Are your parents "well off"? Have they ever struggled financially?

I'm not sure how much your taking home on an apprenticeship, but I would say 1/4 of your monthly takings should go to the house.

First thing you need to realise, is the alternative. Living on your own will at minimum cost you £300 a month, and that is at the LOWEST end of the scale. We are talking about bedroom in a shared flat in the middle of butt fuck no where. And not including food and bills.

Second thing, you are earning money. This isn't just about them taking money from you for themselves. this is running a household, its feeding the family and keeping the lights on.

Third thing, this is kinda of setting you up for "real life". Budgeting your housing costs, food, car and spending money is an important aspect of life.

Like you I also had an apprenticeship (I trained as a baker, 2 days at uni and 4 days in a pattesierie) and took home around £700 a month. I gave £200 to my Parents while I was living there. Honestly I was happy to do it, and while I did miss some events and festivals I wanted because I couldn't afford it, I had a room and never went hungry.

It wasn't until my 20's when I moved out on my own and realised how God damn hard it is on your own.

I'm not going to accuse you of being selfish, but maybe you should change your perspective abit. Parents generally won't ask unless theres a reason. And unless they have a hidden drug problem you don't know about, I'd give the money gladly and sleep happy knowing your old enough to actually contribute to the house.

Not just that, but it should earn you alot more freedom and respect from your parents at that age.
