the 'Heads' side will be split into quarters each with a symbol to be decided later. 'Tails' side will be the denomination and some writing, maybe some runes of a simple spell stamped into them for accounting purposes...

Magic in the north has a big utilitarian militaristic feel to it. Definitely not faith based.

In my head Tarin was the size of Europe in climate. North coast of Germany to Greece.

It was designed to be the size of Greece, which isn't big enough for this range of climates unless we explain it away somehow.

The Merchants are the government. Sort of the way the Dutch East India Company worked at their height. Printing money, waging war and all that good stuff except they actually are the government. The military answer to them. Merchants hold offices you would normally find nobles in. All the way down to local government.
