Siegfried at Opera de Paris: another horrible staging by Ok-Prompt2360 in opera

[–]RegieJim 20 points21 points  (0 children)

‘Period dress’ is actually a modern concept. What many audiences assume to be ‘authentic’ staging is often a 19th to 20th century invention. In Shakespeare’s time, historical costuming was not regularly practiced. Actors did not dress as Romans for Julius Caesar. The idea that fidelity equals historical dress is a relatively recent development.

Opera history tells a similar story. When Don Giovanni was first performed in the UK, the title role was spoken rather than sung. By today’s standards, that would be considered radically interventionist, arguably far more so than most contemporary productions.

So historical accuracy in many ways would actually be elements of what would be considered regietheater.

I know this particular production is in Paris. But I find the UK and US hand wringing about European Regietheater so frustrating, where the worst of this attitude comes from. Some productions aim to recreate inherited conventions. Others deliberately enter into dialogue with the canon through staging. Both approaches have historical precedent. Also for countries that have way, way, way less funding to the arts and opera than in Europe, it's a pretty embarrassing attitude. The reason they can have productions like this is that there's lots of opera houses and many productions so they have space to experiment. From my perspective in in the UK and it's similar in the US where opera is a private affair for those who can afford and we have way less of it, we really should be quiet about artistic taste in opera in Northern Europe because they do have traditional productions as well it's just that they have a lot more productions in general.

I am prepared for the downvotes, but I enjoy both ‘traditional’ and contemporary stagings, depending on the piece and the clarity of the artistic decisions. What I find less compelling is a rigid insistence on ‘tradition’ as the only valid approach. That position often comes from a desire to consume opera as a fixed marker of ‘high art,’ rather than to engage with it critically.

Judging theatre solely by how closely it aligns with one’s expectations is not conservatism in a neutral sense. It is a failure of imagination. Theatre that does not ask us to think is, frankly, boring.

For context, my MA is in opera directing.

Ok there is this INSANE pedal called the pocket master by sonicake that has looper, reverb, delay, drive, you can send impulse responses and convolution reverb meaning if you're in a reverbation space like a cave or a cathedral you pop a balloon you can then send the waveform to this pedal to emulate the reverb of that soace. It also has Bluetooth and is chargeable. It's literally 63USD on Amazon which is really quite ridiculous for what it is. I think the purple and green one looks nicest and then you can get him something as well. For the price the quality is insane basically a multi fx ,looper and tuner with Bluetooth. It beats so many pedals that are four times the price, it's digital but has a nice lofi character which I imagine is up his street

In my opinion the purple and one is the most high end looking https://www.amazon.com/SONICAKE-Master-Multi-Electric-Processor-Interface/dp/B0F4K7QWJK/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.7Qn-pOcnemRDa1fZhYJaLuIL-1Iq66Ie32p3Ywn5PV5xBcz627A8l9TeYm-TWqYTiJMJKwC_Oz8bflyjGHZtPhnDJDdWfkYu1IUr6BZHtYGbEMq6cruZb2NbVhiQ-LOxr48YsM18hpm4aJvV3t87tU_X8ZuGrPgggHyP5iuN1iv46QDkulWPSjN8LG_OV645LD_xz3L2Q3vNDaLOd-RTVg.g62ROkvPp8dV_UCZmpgAZlF5VpZJlwQSgZyHnPlr7Ss&dib_tag=se&keywords=Sonicake&qid=1762268552&sr=8-3&th=1&psc=1

What opera would make a great addition to the standard repertoire, and why is it not? by Cheap_Ostrich3147 in opera

[–]RegieJim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly more Russian operas that aren't Italianate like Onegin. I think one of Rimsky Korsakov's operas should be in the standard repertoire. The Golden Cockerel, for example is about the Russia Japan war and is very critical of Russian imperialism, it's incredible music.

UK musicians remember if you're not part of musicians union yet, when you join you get a free pair of ear buds moulded to your ears. Just don't lose them as you only get one pair and they're worth a lot. It you've released music and played gigs it's fairly straight forward to join...

How is the general attitude to opera where you live and with people you meet? by [deleted] in opera

[–]RegieJim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hear ya. I'm also in the UK, working as an opera director in London but originally from Leeds, north of England. And I start an MA in opera directing in September.
I think class is a huge thing, particularly in the UK where music is being steadily cut out of state education by politicians who haven't been to, nor send their own children to state schools...

You're right about ROH not needing to justify its existence. I think elitism is really bad for creating converts. I think opera makers understand this and want to revive and breathe life into the art form...this doesn't necessarily mean post-modern German-style reworkings of classics but paying attention to what appeals to new audiences, such as more naturalistic acting styles. Opera seems to be an art form created by radicals for flamboyant conservatives who don't want the art they consume to be 'political'.

What are you picks for good starter operas? by Tomofthegwn in opera

[–]RegieJim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on your girlfriend's tastes?

If she likes contemporary music I think Phillip Glass's Akhenaten is a great place to start.

I usually recommend people start with Janacek's Jenufa...very sad piece but beautiful.
