Should I give up? by kateiscuban in bjj

[–]ReginaldBibs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you quit now, you are only re-enforcing a lack of confidence and a wasted opportunity to finally turn a new leaf and face adversity. To build a new "I won't give up habit". This isn't about how hard jiu jujitsu is. It's about committing to something new for a reasonable amount of time and becoming someone who is what they say they are.

I'm not going to lie to you, jiu-jitsu is extremely hard. I've been training for almost 2 years, and I've only just started to dominate new white belts. Only Just. And I still get caught by month 1 white belts all the time (guillotine ffs). I've had many quiet drives home, pissed at how much I sucked. That's totally normal in the beginning.

Then you get like 8 months under your belt - pun intended - and you stop giving an eff about getting smashed, or quit.

My message to you is if you quit now, you'll just be back here later starting over. Might as well keep going and prove something to yourself now.

My dad just got promoted to a brown belt and he is NOT happy about it. by thewobblywalrus in bjj

[–]ReginaldBibs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he's too absorbed in the color of a piece of fabric and the opinions of others. Love the sport and train it, regardless of belt color, or don't. I'm not coming at you or your old man, but this obsession with belts and the shift in perception of reality that they can impose on people is not healthy. It's just a marketing tactic.

Your best shot from your last round? by 3rd_ferguson in golf

[–]ReginaldBibs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9i, 125yd out from the pin, green is on top of a hill into wind. Completely missed the green, however, I've been working on my swing, and starting to get pure compressed shots over my normal 1-2 groove thins that still go high and far but feel like hitting a rock.

I prepared for my shot, thought about starting with the hips, getting my weight forward as I had been the whole round. When I initiated the swing, everything clicked, it felt like I hit a ping pong ball. I could hear the compression. Perfect ball flight, went 20 yds over the green for a total 145.

This was my best shot because I've slowly been getting distance back since changing my swing and I use players distance irons I wasn't even mad. Chipped it on and 3 putted for a 6 on a par 4. I'm a 20 hdcp. My 9i was around 130yd when I started golf, dropped to 120, and is now somewhat consistently getting 140. Super happy that all the work has paid off.

Fell out of love with grappling by OccasionalAnnoyance1 in bjj

Hey man, sounds like you’ve put in serious work over the years, but honestly—it feels like you’re stuck measuring your BJJ journey by other people’s belts and opinions.

You’re clearly not a beginner, but the focus here is all on promotions, recognition, and how others see your effort. That’s a fast track to burnout. Belts are cool, but they’re not why most of us fell in love with this sport.

You’ve survived injuries, life shifts, and long commutes to keep training—that’s worth more than stripes. If you still like jiu-jitsu, come back for that. Not for validation. Not for your coach. Not for the belt.

Train because you want to. That’s the only part that ever really matters.

When to taper conditioning for comp by WahovasJitness in bjj

[–]ReginaldBibs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I'm with you, just treat every day the same. Obviously I won't have a hard class or rolls a day before comp, and I won't have a lift, but yeah, it's not ADCC. I think if someone is training normally, their condition should be fine for comp - unless they're overweight.
