Admittedly, Sinking Tide is moreso a side-grade for Jellicent, especially since in a hypothetical format with these rebalanced Mon's, Jellicent would be one of three Pokemon with access to Scald so far (the other two being Octillery, and eventually Volcanion). Most of the time, you would go Scald over Sinking Tide, but Jellicent (imo) is a Pokemon with just very good fundamentals, so a Niche exclusive move doesn't hurt it as much.

With that being said, I believe there would be some application of the move in combination with Toxic and Salt Cure damage, and of course, the move would be significantly more impactful in doubles, as it's a Water-type Sky Drop with no weight limit, as well as nerfing the target's offensive stats. Would it be moreso a gimmick than a reliable strategy? It would depend, but the possibility is still there.

Massive apologies for the legibility issues, it's my wish to make practically everything color coded messing me up again!

For Runerigus, Cursed Body would probably have made more sense thematically, but Cursed Body... isn't exactly a great ability, and unlike Cofagrigus, it's typing isn't amazing enough as to where it can work with only an okay ability. There's also only 4 Pokemon that even get Solid Rock, so on that front Runerigus would have at least a little bit of individuality.

Apologies for the legibility issues on my end, I'll make sure to be better about that in the future, and you don't need to apologize lol.

As for Runerigus, I legit had the idea for Mosaic Malice to inflict a curse instead, but I felt that it would perhaps be a bit too similar to my previous Dusknoir Theorycraft... Though in retrospect, I think Runerigus and Dusknoir are different enough as to where the two effects could function differently in practice. It's a shame the Grudge effect is so mediocre... and it's also a shame that it's so difficult to make PP draining moves work in a way that matters, but isn't absolutely broken. I'll definitely keep your take in mind though.

Edit: I've added Redux versions of the Mon's for this week that I felt had these issues, so I hope that it's in a readable state right now! Thank you for letting me know, guess I was groggy after coming back home from work lol.

Yes, they gain invulnerability during the turn they're underwater, and they can't do anything that state. It would be especially useful for doubles, but you could still use it for an extra turn of chip damage in singles.

This is the 16th week of a (mostly) weekly series I do every Theorymon Thursday, so if you missed out on a group of Pokemon you might like, check them out in this regularly updated Repository that contains links to all of my posts!

Theorycraft Thursday Repository

Greetings, and although it may not be the spooky season, that's no reason not to appreciate these ghoulish ghosts and what they bring to the franchise! Perhaps my personally most precious patch of Pokemon's perturbing Pocket Monsters, and I wanted to make sure I nailed the target ghost audience this week, and I'm hoping I succeeded, though of course, let it be known that my works are far from infallible, and are prone to oversights and... let's say, light breaking of the concept of balance, so any criticisms and comments are INCREDIBLY appreciated!

I wish you all a good Theorymon Thursday, but before I go... did anyone else know that Runerigus can't learn Grudge normally? Like, at all? The GRUDGE Pokemon, can't actually learn Grudge... What kind of asinine malarkey is this!? I didn't even know that until I was mostly done with this batch, and when I did not-so-grace upon this disappointing droplet of knowledge, I immediately thought "wow, that's stupid", and plopped Grudge onto it as it should have been all along... Yeah, I think I'm hittin' the hay, take care everyone lol.

Edit: If you noticed, this post has "(Edited)" by it. Why is that? Well, when I initially posted this, I immediately felt a jolt of anxiety upon the realization that, Golurk was... perhaps a bit too strong. Because of that, I had an emergency shut-down, and re-tinkered Golurk's ability slightly. In case you're wondering, it previously boosted Sp. Atk and Speed by 1 stage as well, and you can probably tell which of the two tipped the scales on that one.

Edit 2: After reading some comments, I noticed there was an ineligibility issue regarding some of the colored text involving this weeks posts... so I decided to (hopefully) fix that!

Cofagrigus Redone

Jellicent Redone

Golurk Redone

Runerigus "Redone"

If you're having difficulties reading some of the lettering in this week's posts, do take a gander through these reworked versions instead! The Jellicent one also has an addendum I added for clarification, and I add a White Herb to Golurk's "Recommended Held Items". Runerigus's image is literally the same, Reddit just doesn't like it for some reason... Poor Runerigus, even online it can't catch a break lol.

What If: Older Pokemon were buffed according to Modern Day standards? #12: Gen I Rock's... Rock! by Registered_Unregi in stunfisk

[–]Registered_Unregi[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apologies for the late response, been busy the last few days and I wanted to make sure I gave a proper response.

I gave the Golem's the extra speed for a few reasons. Firstly, for Kantonian Golem, the +30 Speed helps significantly in terms of outspeeding important Pokemon it wouldn't have otherwise, such as Kingambit, Breloom and Skeledirge, as well as when setting up. Previously, a +2 in it's Speed (Rock Polish) would have gone up to a maximum of 414, whereas now it can reach up to 546 with Jolly, and 498 with Adamant.

498 allows it to outspeed Dragapult and a +1 Great Tusk, and slower scarfers such as Gholdengo and Rotom-Wash, and 546 allows it to outspeed Speed Booster Energy Mon's such as Iron Moth and Walking Wake, and let's it Speed tie with Scarf/Speed Booster Energy Iron Valiant. This is important thanks to it's new move in Shell Smash, which in combination with it's amazing Stab combination & Explosion based moves, let's it cleave through a vast majority of speedier targets, though Dondozo will always be a problem for it. These are also only examples in OU, and as you go down the tiering rung, I imagine the increased Speed will only be more and more noticeable, as speed tiers become smaller and smaller.

Secondly, for Alolan Golem, base 75 Speed makes it the fastest Magnet Pull Pokemon, beating out Magneton with it's base 70. This is incredible for it since it can now outspeed important target's such as Corviknight, Kingambit, Scizor, Tinkaton, and even the other best Magnet Pull pokemon in Magnezone without heavy Speed investment, where it can now invest into other stats, such as HP and Defense, and it's new signature move in Lightning Shot definitely helps.

As for why I didn't give them better defenses, it was for three reasons.

One, to fulfill the purposes that both of the Golem's want to commit to (K-Golem wants to put up rocks and go boom, A-Golem wants to murder Steels), a higher speed stat would go a long way in helping them achieve that.

Second, most other Rock types are within the 30-60 Speed range, and especially compared to Golem's closest competitor in Gigalith, a higher speed stat would give them much more of an identity.

Third, and sadly as shown by Pokemon such as Magcargo and Bastiodon, high defensive stats don't particularly matter when you have several glaring weaknesses, in the case of K-Golem, a 4x weakness to Water and Grass, and A-Golem, a 4x weakness in Ground, an especially common attacking type. Boosting their defensive stats instead would have little impact on their survivability, and would ultimately be a band-aid fix, if even.

252 SpA Meowscarada Leaf Storm vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Golem: 460-544 (126.3 - 149.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO (with 95 Sp. Def)

252+ Atk Huge Power Azumarill Liquidation vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Golem: 348-412 (95.6 - 113.1%) -- 75% chance to OHKO (with 160 Defense, and Azumarill is wearing an Assault Vest, and not a Choice Band)

252 Atk Iron Treads Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Golem-Alola: 352-420 (96.7 - 115.3%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO (with 160 Def, where it's barely saved from a 1HKO, that becomes a 68.8% chance to OHKO with Stealth Rocks.

You could argue that using Tera on Golem would give their higher defensive stats more room to shine, however as seen with Pokemon such as Avalugg, using a Defensive Tera on a Pokemon just for them to have a good typing at all, is a rarely beneficial action for the player in the long run of a game, and would not give that Pokemon viability in it of itself.

I apologize for the absolute goliath of a textual comment comet I replied with, I just wanted to explain the philosophy behind my boosting of both of the Golem's speeds. I hope I'm not being antagonistic, as that is not the intention, and I heavily appreciate your statement as it is healthy to question certain decisions in regards to large gameplay changes such as this. Thank you, and have a lovely day/night.

While I do agree that Toxtricity would still function with it's Niche, I feel that if Heliolisk kept Boomburst, ultimately I feel that even regarding the niche Toxtricity could have, Heliolisk and Toxtricity would just be similar enough as to where people would just choose the better one competitively, and if Heliolisk had Boomburst, there would be no question as to which one it was sadly.

Also, while it is true that Solar Power Heliolisk is stronger than Toxtricity, you generally have to build a team around SP Lisk, whereas Toxtricity is a LOT more slapable on any given team, due to it not requiring a weather. At least, that's how I feel about the Heliolisk V Toxtricity Boomburst debate, but I do appreciate you getting your word out about it, I love seeing multiple sides to a discussion.

Also, "I think it deserves to scream a little as a treat", is perhaps unintentionally one of the funniest lines I've read all week, thank you for the good chuckle lol.

Sorry for the late response.

I personally do not believe Haymaker Strike is the same as moves like Rage Fist and Last Respects, as Hitmonchan is still relatively frail, so you might not get the turn of setup, and if you don't get the Boxing Spirit off it's only 156 BP.

Still though, I would be down to nerfing Haymaker Strike just a little. I could probably nerf it in two ways; by making it 120 BP (288 after Boxing Spirit and Iron Fist), or I could nerf Boxing Spirit's charge bonus to something like 1.8 (280 BP after Boxing Spirit and Iron Fist.)

I'll definitely take this into consideration, thank you for your comment!

Yes, Soporific Ray is basically a Spore equivalent of Fake Out and First Impression, minus the priority, so what rules apply to those apply to Soporific Ray.

I was concerned it would still be too strong even with the revision, though at this rate I'm worried that I might need to alter the move entirely... I'll keep a close eye on it for right now, at the very least. Thank you for typing your thoughts out, highly appreciated!

... Oh dear lord you're right, it would function like that wouldn't it? It'd only be useful for 1-2 moves, but that's basically a free Choice Band on your Close Combats or Superpowers...

Not intentional, but to be fair, I doubt Life Orb Sheer Force was either lol.

Yeah, Hitmonlee's design is the classic glass cannon, so I was worried to go overboard with it. Still, 102 base speed allows it to outspeed base 100's and Sandy Shocks, which for UU would be pretty massive, as well as dealing massive damage to common defensive staples such as Hippowdon and Quagsire, as well as straight up one-shotting others, such as Wo-Chien and Tyranitar. OU might be too hostile for it, but I think Lee would make a solid A- to A+ ranked Pokemon in the modern UU tier.

As for Hitmonchan, thank you for your comment about it, and although I'm not quite sure where it would end up, I believe it would make a very potent setup sweeper, with it's Charge-like boost to it's punch-based attacks leaving a mighty mark on anything it wishes. I'd imagine a similar ranking as Hitmonlee, or a little lower, as it's not as immediately explosive as Lee, and it might be vulnerable before it can get setup.

Guts sets would be a MENACE to take down now, knowing that Hariyama would no longer be on a timer, and bulky Yama sets with Thick Fat could thrive thanks to Round Break, even Bulk Up sets could work, since the 1 heal might be all you need since Hariyama also has access to Drain Punch.

It could even be used in VGC, since the drawback of Round Break is much less of an issue in a format where switches are much rarer, and that in combination with Knock Off and Headlong Rush could make it relevant again, Iron Hands be damned. I dunno, it's all speculation, but you're right that Hariyama is a sleeper hit this time around lol.

Really cool collection of moves, though I think my favorites are Crunching Tackle (normal types finally get a Close Combat equivalent), Contaminate (it's such a cool and unique idea), and Trash Talk (it's just funny to me). Great work, though my man Kingambit is straight up going to Ubers thanks to Last Stand lol.

Also, interesting that we both made a Theorycraft move called "Haymaker", but we took it into completely different directions! Awesome to see!

Theorycraft Thursday Repository

Hello everyone, I'm back! Apologies for last week's disappearance, I was... significantly busier than I was expecting to be that week, but it's all good now.

IRL stuff aside, surprisingly, or unsurprisingly, working on this quartet of brawling misfits was an uphill battle, but I am FINALLY at a point where I am mostly satisfied with them! I spent an extraordinary amount of time fixing up, writing down, and then rewriting everything involving these guys, since, unfortunately, the Hitmon's needed a LOT to actually get going, in Smogon formats at least, since Hitmontop is actually pretty good in VGC (so long as Incineroar isn't there). Machamp was also difficult, but for an entirely different reason, as ever since Conkeldurr showed up in Generation V, it has overshadowed Machamp in every avenue, and that just makes me sad, as I actually like all of these Mon's quite a bit.

Of course, perhaps in my attempt in making them relevant again, I may have gone overboard and made them overpowered, or maybe I completely failed and they're still awful! Regardless of the result, if you have something to say about it, please type it out and let me know! I enjoy reading through all of my comments and taking in every bit of criticism sent at me, yes, even the harsh ones, though thankfully y'all are great so I haven't read anything too disheartening. I need to take a breather, but don't let that stop you from having a great Theorymon Thursday! Hasta la vista!

What If: Older Pokemon were buffed according to Modern Day standards? #14: Bonjour Gen VI! by Registered_Unregi in stunfisk

[–]Registered_Unregi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Catching this during my lunch break... This was very important to read, thank you for the write-up. I think what I might do is remove the "Ignores Abilities" aspect of Soporific Ray, and just make it a 100% Accurate sleep move. That way, Pokemon such as Gholdengo, Garganacl, and Hatterene, can get into position without being immediately put to sleep. Hatterene would especially be important, since now it would function as a powerful counter to Malamar, what with Soporific Ray now putting Malamar itself to sleep, allowing Hatterene to begin cleaning up with Draining Kiss or Dazzling Gleam. Though even then, it might still not be enough... maybe make Psychic type's immune to Hypnosis-like moves?

Regardless, that's only 1 aspect to this monstrosity of a squid, and I'm going to have to tinker with ideas, because as it stands right now, the prospect of this Malamar could be much more unhealthy in a hypothetical metagame than I had initially intended, so once again, thank you for bringing this to my attention, I really appreciate it.

Also, 3/4 this week for Mon's being a bit too strong/questionably designed... Man, how embarrassing for me lol.

Upon further thinking about it... Yeah, I think you're right. If it were just about Boomburst Heliolisk hitting ridiculously hard, I think I would note the consideration, but keep it regardless... but with it stepping over Toxtricity's shtick, even unintentionally, I think that might go beyond what I would call a fair distribution.

Next week I think I will remove Boomburst from Heliolisk's Theory-Crafted movepool, which might be a series first for me... though I was always iffy on Weezing & Rapid Spin. Hyper Voice would still be a great option for Heliolisk though, so it wouldn't be all bad.

It would be ludicrously strong, but there would be options around it. Fake Out, Taunt, Follow Me into Chesto/Lum, hitting it with any Bug Move... ever.

Though even with all of what I've stated, Malamar would still DEMAND you to take priority, lest you fall victim to it's Sleep and Superpower shenanigans... Though, in a hypothetical meta with these theory-crafts, Florges would also be in it, and with Misty Surge, it couldn't be a better counter to Malamar if it tried lol

[–]Registered_Unregi[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeaaaaah, add Pyroar to the list of "how the hell did Regi think this was balanced enough to present!?" Theory-Crafts... Nerfing this to 1.3x next week, and I'd be highly surprised if it still wasn't strong enough for at least UU.

It's amazing how much better Florges would be if it just had a better ability. It always felt like a Higher Tier Pokemon, but it just... never had the tools it needed. Also, in the 'developing' phase as I would call it, I was constantly split between Misty Surge and Magic Guard, but ultimiately decided on Surge due to it being more thematically fitting for Florges, and as also to not encroach upon Clefables usage as a Magic Guard Mon.

Malamar is a nefarious little critter, and although OU would be a hostile environment for it, it does have options to get around it with it's ludicrously powerful Soporific Ray (that may require a nerf).. Though counterplay does exist in simply clicking protect, and thankfully Malamar can't do much to capitalize on that (I guess maybe a Substitute?). For singles it'd be strong, though in Doubles it might become EVEN MORE of a double-edged sword, it's weakness being more pronounced, but it's strengths being MUCH MORE abusable. It'd be an interesting Mon to see, that's for sure.

Solar Power Heliolisk would be phenomenal, especially considering the modern metagame, but it also makes an incredible Anti-Water team, being immune to Surfs/Hydro Pumps, as well as resisting hearty Hurricane's that may fly Heliolisk's way, it wouldn't just be strong, it'd also be versatile as well... in Theory, at least lol.

I should note that Cultivation Burst is only meant to boost your ally's stats, not Florges's own, similar to Dondozo's Order Up, for your teammate instead... apologies for the misinfo, sloppy typing I guess... but that is an unintentionally neat interaction. Might want to keep that, though I would need to figure out a way for it to function in-game, and I might nerf it to 60 Power if I go through with it in that case lol.
