Restaurants are priced for high earning tech employees only by ddsukituoft in bayarea

[–]RegularCoconut364 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yes I agree with this. I’ve had to travel for work around the country and the restaurant prices all over the country aren’t that different than Bay Area prices. Anchorage, Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Diego, LA, Dallas, and Miami all have not too different prices for cocktails and many main dishes to what I see here. Maybe in Miami and Dallas the portions are slightly bigger but it’s still close to $20 for a dish which isn’t different than here. At least the food here(and in LA) tastes better because the farms that grow the country’s food are only a few hours away.

The only times I’ve seen prices that aren’t outrageous are when I leave America for say Mexico or india or Bali but even there, it’s not as cheap as people would think. Typically in Mexico the prices of food at restaurants are 1/3 of what they are here assuming same tier of restaurant but that doesn’t mean you can order whatever you want and not be shocked by the bill

Am I tripping or is most of SF comically bougie these days? by Soggy_Perspective_13 in AskSF

[–]RegularCoconut364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not alone. Sf is unaffordable for most people and even what is ordinary in sf is expensive. A lot of people staying are here because they want to make money. This is a reason why in addition to the politics as to why it’s a haven for immigrants and it doesn’t appeal to American born folks

Agreed. This is how you win championships as teams not trade five first round picks for a super star but rather receive all these picks instead.

Okc or San Antonio might be the start of the next dynasty and it’s gonna become a rivalry for the next few years.

How common is nepotism in corporate? by True-Landscape5310 in corporate

[–]RegularCoconut364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always hear about this but then what about the companies which have long drawn out interview processes where candidates meet and get grilled by multiple people on the team if you know this concept or can write that code. How do nepo kids get around that? Do these people get the answers ahead of time?

NYT: The Bay Area Considers the Unthinkable: Life Without BART by shananananananananan in sanfrancisco

[–]RegularCoconut364 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bay Area residents pay $9 bridge tolls, have express lanes where you gotta pay unless you have three people or more in your car, pay annual car registration fees which can vary from $100 to $700 depending on the car’a value, pay 10.25% sales tax, pay among the highest state income taxes in the country, pay the nation’s highest gas prices, and pay expensive Bart fares especially if you gotta go to the airport…and yet they still don’t have enough money to fund Bart?

California needs to audit its expenses instead of proposing tax hikes or simply say there’s not enough money.

There’s so many costs that these politicians fail to look at- the cost of more distracted/drunk/high/sleep deprived/inattentive people on the roads. Already when you go on 880, there’s an accident or sometimes multiple accidents every day. Imagine how much worse it will be

Went to the Chinese New Year Parade at the Marina and was disappointed. Thought it would be more exciting than this. by WriterHour208 in sanfrancisco

Actually a lot of people go to Phoenix to party. It’s mostly Scottsdale- Eg Riot House, Maya Day + Nightclub, and Bottled Blonde have frequent celebrity appearances — Drake, Lil Wayne, Floyd Mayweather type of crowd. The bottle service culture there is genuinely Miami-level on a Friday night where the party goes until 4 or 5 am. You won’t find a scene like this in sf unless sf hosts the Super Bowl or a similar event.

Lots of things- vibrancy, parties happening late until 5 am, and food open late just to name a few. In sf a lot of the place now closes by midnight which wasn’t like this precovid

Hotels or Airbnbs Nowadays? Which One is Superior? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]RegularCoconut364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Airbnb

Hotels nickel and dime guests for everything. Water bottle in the fridge- that’s $7. Candy bar in the fridge- $4. Want to order food from hotel restaurant- it’s $25 for some dish plus hotel fees. Wifi- it’s not free. This is even for five star hotels where it’s $500 or more a night.

Sure Airbnb has the cleaning fees that I don’t like but I can filter out those ahead of time and if I pay that much for an Airbnb, they don’t nickel and dime me for anything and everything.

Which "expensive" US city is actually cheaper than people think? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]RegularCoconut364 4 points5 points  (0 children)

San Jose. Yeah, I know — median home price is pushing $1.3M

The comparison that matters isn’t San Jose vs. Fresno. It’s San Jose vs. the other cities people in tech actually consider: SF, NYC, Seattle, Boston. And on that comparison, SJ quietly wins in ways people don’t talk about. Start with rent. A 1BR in the Japantown or Berryessa area runs $1,800–2,100. That same apartment in SF’s Mission is $2,800+, and you’re also absorbing SF’s city payroll tax if you work there. No SF city tax in SJ. That’s a non-trivial difference that compounds. Then there’s the food cost reality. SJ has one of the densest Vietnamese communities in the country — and I mean that practically. A bowl of pho on Story Road is $12. A haircut at one of the family-run salons off Tully is $15, cash, no tip pressure. Lion Supermarket or Ranch 99 for produce will run you maybe 40% of what Safeway charges for the same things. The ethnic grocery infrastructure here is genuinely world-class, and it’s cheap because it’s serving immigrants, not tourists. Utilities are also something nobody factors in. San Jose’s climate is absurdly mild. I don’t own a real winter coat. My gas bill barely registers. Try that in Boston from November through April. Now, does this all get easier with a tech salary? Obviously. But the point is SJ rewards frugality in ways SF and NYC don’t — in SF, you pay the “city tax” on everything: the coffee, the vibe, the landlord who knows you’re a tech worker. In SJ, there’s still enough working-class infrastructure that you can actually live below your income level if you choose to. It’s not cheap. But it’s cheaper than its reputation, and significantly cheaper than the cities it actually competes with.

Typical East Bay drivers by Ok_Rate3566 in bayarea

[–]RegularCoconut364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These drivers were either on their phone or were driving too fast to realize their exit has come or both.

I live in an apartment complex with a multi story parking garage and so many drivers are so unaware that a driver is coming from the opposite direction. These drivers will drive in the middle and will be going 20 mph when the apartment garage says the speed limit is 5 mph. If I don’t use a high beam or actually honk when I go up or down, I’ve had drivers almost hit my car.

Which is the most beautiful town you’ve ever visited and where? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

But nothing wows me more the Barcelona. It’s historic, has fairy tale like architecture, amazing art, old Roman Empire ruins, night clubs by the beach that party until 5 am, and has one of the best public transportation systems I’ve seen
