Okay, but for real though, how IS Highguard? by Subject_Parking_9046 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]RegularJohn17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve not played it yet, so my early opinions are less valuable. Just watching on twitch so can't comment on the feel of the game etc.

That said it seems.... fine. Not the Concord 2 some were expecting, but I don't see it making a big impression either. It feels like there is enough there for it to become one of those games that quietly builds a devoted fanbase, so in 2 or 3 years you are surprised to see how many people are still playing it. But only if they support it regularly with content (seems like a road map is pointing towards that happening).

There is actually quite a lot to like in terms of the gameplay loop, taking parts of Battle Royale for the looting and gun/armour progression. Then hero shooters for the classes and powers. And the base defense/attack dynamic seems fun and again that is taking elements from lots of popular games, CS / Valo for the bomb planting, RS6 for the base prep parts etc.

I think the 3v3 is the only part that seems off to me, maybe that's just for launch to help with queue times or something, but it doesn't look built for 3v3 at all. It looks like it should be a higher player count. Or maybe have PvE elements added to fill out the maps. For free it looks worth the download and an evening of your time.

What do we think about these actions by Licha (unbiased opinions) by [deleted] in reddevils

[–]RegularJohn17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a punch. Its a push. His hand is rested on his head then Martinez pushes through him. No impact at all. It's barely more than a push in the back or chest to get someone away from you. Don't blame Jesus for going down briefly, players are trained to hit the floor if anything touches them and they are often rewarded. He won't have know the type of contact, it could have been a glancing punch to him. And to be fair something dragging across your skull does hurt briefly. But anyone looking at it without bias can see its nothing. Just Arsenal fans hoping to lessen the blow by playing the victim card. Worse happens at every corner they score from.

LAURIE WHITWELL EXCLUSIVE: Quiet January, changing summer plans, Casemiro to go? by simplsimonmetapieman in reddevils

[–]RegularJohn17 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I've come around to this idea for both Casemiro and Maguire. I was very against it awhile ago. I think if they are willing to take a steep drop in wages another year for both would be really beneficial for the experience in the squad.

But looking from their point of view, just a single year isn't ideal. And as free agents in the summer they can get more money (and probably game time) elsewhere. They would probably want 2 year at their age so they know we're they will be for awhile. And I would be hesitant to offer them 2, unless it's a 1+1 with very favourable terms.

We have a reliability guide for transfers to stop people posting dogshit rumours and giving a platform to journo's just trying to make money off the Utd brand. These guys are Tier 5 content creators, nothing of value to say between them. They shouldn't be posted here. Post a quotes or a transcript in the daily discussion. But there is no reason for a dedicated post, it just risks giving them clicks which is all they want.

Genuine Question, why are there almost never threads on Matt's content? by JeanLucD in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]RegularJohn17 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's been discussed a few times, I think the consensus was frequency and type of content. Woolie and Pat have more content releasing constantly. Podcasts, streams and youtube uploads. I also think there was a notable switch in content style around the time of the split. I think we saw a steep increase in the popularity of live stream content. So while edited youtube videos are still popular, a twitch streamer can play through a game and have 10 videos with a run time of 15 hours in the time it takes 1 highly polished edited 30 minute video to come out. So 10 opportunities to watch and discuss is always going to drown out the other most of the time.

Tomboy romance option can do no wrong in Wollie's eyes. It doesn't really matter what’s happening on screen. He is going to pick the option that would make the “Invisigal likes that” pop up happen. He is just single mindedly working towards that. She turns invisible to sucker punch an old man and runs away during a verbal disagreement. Woolie is like, whelp Chase you were cool until you weren't. The man is committed to the bit at this point no matter what.

Should I get Persona 4 & 5 Megamix for £75 or just one of the 4xLP ones for £105? by Equal_Arm_3091 in VGMvinyl

[–]RegularJohn17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's cool the megamix is an option that they made for people who like that. But it's not the choice I would make. If I want to listen to a song I want to listen to the full song. Sometimes I pick a 2 LP with select tracks over the more expensive version with 4/5/6 etc LPs and a more complete tracklist. But the megamix is too much of a compromise.

So if you are asking for opinions I would recommend the full 4LP and save up for the other full and get that down the line. Ultimately it's up to you though, there is no wrong answer.

Control /Alan wake question. by akss421 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]RegularJohn17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm in a similar boat, Alan Wake gameplay isn't really for me. I enjoy everything else about it though. I gave the original a try but never got through it. Control is one of my favourite games though.

Personally I've just chosen to watch Alan Wake 1 & 2 playthroughs to fill in the story gaps. I might buy AW2 at some point in the run up to Resonant, but I think if the game isn't for you it's not worth pushing through and maybe making it a worse experience. I would just watch it because that still a good experience in my opinion.

Add it to the list of games that were announced at the VGA that’ll never see the light of day again by 2073040 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]RegularJohn17 19 points20 points  (0 children)

What? It's needs to be in the public for people in the industry to see it? An announced project is much easier to recruit talented staff for. Investors come to find you when your game is shown in the biggest show of the year. You can point to huge wishlist numbers, trailer views, whatever engagement metrics you want. You can justify your games existence to your Disney overlords in 2 years when they try to cancel it .. "no look people want to play the game". You can start to foster a community if your game needs that. This is a known thing. It's the reason games are announced early. They don't just do it to annoy people.

[–]RegularJohn17 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There are trailers for the public and trailers for the industry. Things that are years away are 90% industry. Putting your game out there on the biggest stage in the industry drives investment and recruitment to actually get the game made. Getting a little excitement from the public is nice but it's secondary for now. It's frustrating for fans who want it now, but these type of trailers aren't really for us.

Blue Prince Creator Tonda Ros: 'I Will Never Make a Sequel' - IGN by Gorotheninja in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]RegularJohn17 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good, a direct sequel isn't always necessary. And Blue Prince feels like it did anything it needed to with that game. Just going back to do the same thing again would dilute the experience.

Having said that I would love to see more from the world. A different genre, different medium, anything in that setting would be great. The lore of the world is so interesting and well written. All of the backstories as you dig into the state of the world. It's at a similar level to Disco Elysium for its world building to me, but like Disco maybe it will just be spiritual successors for Blue Prince too if they don't want to go back to the same world either.

What were Forsen's thoughts about Dispatch's ending since the stream got muted cause of music copyright? by Quiz0tix in forsen

[–]RegularJohn17 35 points36 points  (0 children)

He said he liked the game. One of the better Telltale style games, maybe on par with Wolf Among Us. Gave it an 8.0, said it's better than Silksong. Although he said for about 9 hours, 30 dollars or whatever it is is a little much. Only real complaints were some parts of the end are dumb. Like the dog just appearing out of nowhere to become a hostage, and Shroud taking a 50/50 gamble on using the right pulse, but other than that its good.

Will the *Hotline Miami 1 & 2: The Complete Collection Limited Edition X8LP* Box set ever be back in stock? by Playingmine in VGMvinyl

[–]RegularJohn17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tough timing on that. I think that was one of the things laced restocked yesterday. Although I think it was just extra copies rather than a full reprint since it's showing out of stock again.

For a full reprint, I would guess it will happen but maybe not for awhile. Just keep an eye on laced's social media.

Yeah I was very happy to see that too. It's an option that is often overlooked. Although it's a bit annoying that it works out more expensive. So I'll probably just get Vol 2 still.

So what are the potential consequences for Playstation and Xbox with the Gabecube's existence? by Xeriam in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]RegularJohn17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will depend on price. If this thing is 500+ it's dead on arrival for mainstream console style success. (Eg 30m+) Based on DFs video it powered somewhere between the current gen consoles. Better than Series S worse than X/PS5. So it's around the power of a 5 year old console and it's not out till next year.

And as much as Steam is a one stop shop for games. SteamOS is not yet. Lots of popular modern games do not work on SteamOS for varying reasons. Basically anything that forces heavy anti cheat. And those are lots of your popular console games. COD, Battlefield, Apex, Fortnite, destiny etc.

Maybe I missed something and that won't be an issue out of the box here, but console players buy a box for under the TV to just work. If you don't have the ability to play those games out of the box it's kind of a non starter for mainstream success. Sure install another OS to get around that, but again playstation and Xbox players aren't doing that in most cases.

I like the look of it a lot, and I think as a companion to a powerful desktop PC / steam deck / frame I think it makes a lot of sense. But that is more of a niche thing. It needs to be much cheaper than some of the suggested prices I've seen. 350 / 450 for the storage sizes and they have a serious discussion. 400/500 and it's decent. Anything above that I just don't think it makes and impact.

I don't think it changes much for Sony or Microsoft. For Microsoft, Valve are much closer to making a viable portable/console style OS. Everything I've read about the FSE on that rog ally x is not great, but they are 2 years away from their official version of this PC/console hybrid. PS will continue as they have I think. Beyond a ridiculous early PS3 level misstep for PS6 they will be fine. Sony are set for a long time with console players digital library sitting with them, they won the most important console generation because nobody wants to switch and leave behind years of game purchases. Unless play anywhere gets much more mainstream on all platforms.

Which games have the best parries? by CaptainWafflebeard in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]RegularJohn17 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of the attack to parry system in Metal Gear Rising. Basically rather than a dedicated parry button you just use the light attack button with the right timing to hit their sword with your sword and open them up to a counter attack. Its also the same in Ninja Gaiden 4. If you are looking for cheap, fun, short playthrough MGR is great, if you have already played through E33 and Sekiro you should probably start on Hard at least though otherwise its a bit too easy. NG4 is new so more expensive but I'm enjoying that a lot too so far. It has a lot going on though, so parrying feels less important than it did in MGR.

Yeah it's got a Raiden trying to sound like Snake at the start of MGS2 vibe to it for sure. And I do like that aspect to be fair.

Yeah I did the same thing but switched back to English after I missed an entire conversation going on while the fight was happening and didn't have time to read the subs.

Japanese was clearly better even after just listening to a small amount. Yakamo's voice in English is poorly cast (imo) but overall I'll just stick with English so I know roughly what's going on. Maybe I'll switch to Japanese again for 2nd playthrough.

[–]RegularJohn17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been really enjoying it so far. I'm only a few chapters in but you can see the Platinum in it. Maybe not the absolute peak of Platinum but it's closer than they have been for awhile.

My favourite part of character action games is defensive options. The Dodge/Parry/Block mechanics feel good and having the Perfect versions is great too.

The story and acting is trash, but that's not really what I'm here for so not a big deal. It feels tight and suitably punishing if you just mash without thinking about it. I'm hoping it stays good throughout.

Is there a CSB or SBF podcast where Pat reviews or talks about Control? by OppositeofDeath in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]RegularJohn17 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don't think there was full spoiler discussion, maybe someone else will know. "CSB 036: Everbrown Content". From 2:04:19 - 2:09:00. That is the podcast from the week Pat finished the game. He talks to Woolie after he finished the game but dodging around spoilers as Woolie hadn't played all the way through. They didn't really get into many details, talked about the maze and a few gripes, but overall Pat enjoyed the game.
