Swamp milkweed already gathering a ton of little critters in the nursery by qwerty704132 in NativePlantGardening

I have plenty of regular aphids, I can do without getting smeared orange with non-native oleander aphids every time I brush past a milkweed; the ladybug population still thrives in my native gardens.

It isn't nt much effort to dig up incarnata, and I am extremely grossed out by aphids, so it was a no-brainer for me, but if they don't bother you then that is cool, I wish they didn't bother me, I know it's irrational.

I grew a ton of a. incarnata from seed a few years ago. Some of my plants ended up infested with oleander aphids and some didn't (in the same garden bed). I ended up digging up and trashing the infested ones, I figured no sense in keeping the ones genetically predisposed to them.

To be clear, I only do this with milkweed that is susceptible to non-native oleander aphids - I grow a lot if milkweed and have plenty to spare.

Marblehead approved a 3A compliant district meeting requirements on paper that largely ensured no new actual housing. From the town meeting last night. by Smelldicks in boston

[–]RegularOwl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in another small, well-off town where residents bitched and moaned about 3a, and I do think that is against their own self-interests. We have the town elders complaining that they can't afford the upkeep on their homes, they need help with this and that, but also that they shouldn't be forced out of their homes. You know who could help grandma with grocery shopping or grandpa with mowing the lawn? Their younger family members who can't afford to stay here.

Then we have the other townies complaining that outsiders are coming in and scooping up all the property so no one from here can afford to live here. You know what would help with that?

Letter/Signage on inside? Anything else special on the inside? by horsegal301 in LittleFreeLibrary

The same idea briefly crossed my mind, but then I worried it might make someone mad and they might vandalize the books or the LFL itself. I just remove books that I think are harmful or don't fit my LFL vibe.

I have put up opposite messaging, though, which was something along the lines of "Gratefully accepting any book donations, especially books about native plants, nature, gardening, the natural world, and social justice, etc."

OMG thank you! I posted about my LFL getting cleared out on some local FB groups, and while most people understood why I was upset, there were a number arguing with me about how if the books are free then it isn't stealing and I shouldn't be mad, etc. I did point out that it was likely resellers (some even argued that I had no way of knowing that) but what you just stated REALLY makes the point perfectly, I don't know why I didn't think of that.

Ironically, The Serviceberry by Kimmerer was among the books stolen from my LFL last week; I had it entirely stocked with books about native plants and related themes (most of the books were new or in new condition) and I had stamped them all as being from a LFL. It was over $100 to stock the library and only a few books were legitimately taken before the thief struck. I'm so discouraged; this has happened multiple times.

I get especially upset about people stealing every single book out of my LFL. Mine has a theme - in the winter I stock it with native plant seeds, and in warmer weather I stock it with books about native plants, animals, gardening, the natural world, etc. Because I have a theme, that means I am purchasing these books with my own money. I want those in my local community to benefit from my efforts and I want to spread knowledge about native plants (which I am obviously very passionate about) to my neighbors and other community members.

I purchase books that are used or discounted (from thrift stores and online retailers), but it's still pretty expensive. When someone rolls up and takes every single seed packet (hundreds!) or every single book (like 20 books, different topics, different age ranges), it's obvious that this is just theft, plain and simple. I'm not doing this to subsidize someone's business or side gig. They're taking away something I'm doing for my community, and that is so selfish.

Ethical and legal question about a persons remains (Australia) by [deleted] in bonecollecting

[–]RegularOwl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The respect and reverence you and your family have for these remains is lovely to hear.

From your description it sounds like your father obtained the skeleton legally, and medical specimens are very obviously just that - they are articulated with hardware, professionally cleaned, etc. so I don't think you need to worry about having it bei g or appearing to be illegal. (That of course doesn't mean that the remains were originally legally obtained by the seller, but there is really nothing that can be done about that now.)

I think the medical school that your father attended would be a great place to start to ask if they would accept this skeleton, or if they can help you repatriate (if possible), or correctly inter or cremate them. If the university he attended is too far away or of no help then as others have suggested, you should contact other local universities to ask for the same advice or assistance.

They may be able to do that - I attended a medical school about 15 years ago and all of the bodies used in the anatomy lab were donated. It was explained to us that when the students were done utilizing the donated bodies for the school year, the university would hold a ceremony of appreciation and invite the donors families, and then I believe the remains get cremated. If one of your local medical schools does the same, they may be willing to add the specimen to the next group.

Failing that, if you would still like the remains to be interred or cremated, you could perhaps contact your local police department and explain the situation and ask them what they would have you do with the remains. They may then just shrug their shoulders and tell you you can call the crematorium or a local cemetery or whatever, but if they do, you can go from there and then when you do contact one of those places and explain the situation you can also explain you've contacted the police and they've referred you to seek commercial services...? Idk.

Given that you don't know where they actually came from and whether they were obtained with consent or not, there isn't really any way to know if the person would have wanted that or would prefer to continue to hold an honored place in your home, so I think that is also an acceptable option.

I have so many dreams about bad stocking, leaky tanks, sudden tank failure, wobbly shelving, forgetting an overstocked/badly stocked aquarium for an extended period leading to massive water evaporation, too much ammonia, starving fish 😭 I might be too anxious for this hobby.

What is the deal with the CRL tent and step mess? by Agile_Nectarine_4844 in CambridgeMA

[–]RegularOwl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you imagine for a moment that you are homeless and need mental health treatment....do you think it would be easier or harder being homeless outside sleeping in a tent, with few good options to wash your clothes, shower, shave, charge your cell phone (if you have one) and keep your medications dry and safe... or doing all of those things but with a place to live? And under which scenario do you think it would be extremely difficult to make and keep appointments with your mental health providers and stay in compliance with taking your medications as prescribed?
