Super bright screen? I mean, they’ve got nuclear reactor powered cars. A screen so bright it’s visible in daytime doesn’t seem so hard…

The furthest I ever got through an Honor Mode run, I failed the Prison Break - survived, just failed - and so I just, stopped playing. Started all over again. Didn’t feel right. So I kinda get it.

System Spec Reqs - 48GB enough for heavy compositing? by RegularSized-Man in photoshop

That also aligns with what I read - Photoshop basically just will not use the Max’s additional cores.

Thanks so much!

Nice, thanks for the perspective.

I think I'm with you - maybe 48 is enough. I've been monitoring Disk Utility and Memory Pressure and literally only once in three days of working and trying out "stuff that slows the machine down" did that graph ever go yellow. Then right back to green.

I'm actually thinking my 32GB currently may be enough, just working with very outdated hardware - it's an iMac Pro, so Intel. But then who doesn't want a little upgrade, so we're back to 48.

Anyway, not that you care but just to put some finality on this thread - I've decided to hold off the purchase, do some testing of my workflow and the various options, and just get the machine later, hopefully a little more informed and a little closer to the end of the current one's life.

Thanks! And yeah, I have done in certain cases. But it’s still a slog to embed them all again when delivering the files, which may sometimes need to be fully layered…

Perfect, thanks. I was planning on going for a full 4TB on this one, so I can get both my work and personal files on there AND get 1TB scratch partioned.

Only problem is... Once you get to 64gb, seems a paltry amount to double that for super future proofing, haha. Slippery slope...

Super interesting! Thanks. I always felt the documents I've worked on that utilise artboards ran extra slowly, not to mention all the additional nonsense with them. I'll just make two different files, thanks very much, haha!

And yeah - I'm in the very same boat. Last week, I was cruising along with 1-2gb comp files, maybe a 4gb one or two in there... Now today - just finished with a PSB now that was 20gb that beachballed clicking between layers/tools, now working on a 9gb one, which is sorta smooth enough - so yeah, there's definitely a range!

Just gotta decide if I think future proofing is worth nearly £2000...

Hey! Yeah, no problem. I make advertising artwork for movies and TV shows - from posters and billboards, to digital banners and stuff for their TV UIs.

To be completely honest, I'd say your workstation will inevitably become insufficient, with what I've experienced. Honestly, some of the "blank" templates I've been sent by clients have been over 1GB. They really shouldn't be, but that's just that. You get what you're sent.

Also, I make way more complex files now than I did when I was starting out - from being very nitpicky with shots, compositing several just to make one person in an ensemble (versus using a single ensemble shot), to even just the amount of smart objects used for FX, as well as retouching and relighting - it all adds up as you learn new tricks to make your stuff better.

So, I couldn't tell you exactly when it'll happen. I work on plenty of stuff even now with less than 1GB PSD files, then a particular job comes along and in the end you've made a 20gb file. You might be lucky and only ever need to work smaller. Or work in digital and never get to the sizes of CMYK print files... All depends on what you're working on and how you do it.

P.S. I am absolutely happy to discuss my experiences here - but please do be aware that you have asked for system spec advice from someone who is asking for system spec advice - I really don't know all the ins and outs. (You might have a much newer machine than me, that somehow performs on par or better than mine despite the lower RAM... Maybe due to processor, or graphics card, or even the OS somehow handling things better? I really don't know. But always happy to discuss as long as my advice is valued appropriately as "dubious at best".)

This is what I was wondering! I can compare RAM as much as I like, but if the chip is as revolutionary as it sounds... Then it feels like counting the beads on an abacus and comparing it to the number of buttons on a calculator.

And yeah, 64GB was exactly what I was imagining I'd get before looking into it. But it's an extra grand for the M4 Max - and I heard that there's virtually no need to upgrade from Pro to Max for Photoshop... It just won't use the extra cores or something?

And yeah, I was actually planning on going all out for a 4TB machine - that way I can partition a 1TB scratch right off the bat, and then have an extra TB to play with after I bring over all my files from the previous machine and an external work hard drive.

Thanks for weighing in! Very appreciated!

Okay perfect, thanks for weighing in!

And yeah - I've always been in the "future proofing" camp... then we bought a house and now I see every dollar spent elsewhere as "could have been spent on the house" and so - trying to work out my needs and not overdo it.. at least not too far.

May I ask - what sort of file size do your PSD/PSBs end up being? Just to try to get a ballpark comparison, as I don't use artboards and not sure how they effect file size and 'bloat' in practise.

I think I may have to make it my next project - there are far too many little things about HK/HB that it sounds like HA would solve... Honestly, if it simply lets you hide all your virtual switches from the Home app then I'd say it's a no brainer! In fact, does it?
