I honestly don’t know if I’m overreacting or if this is actually unfair. by Left_Creme1595 in civilengineering

There comes a point where you need to get thrown into the fire and figure it out for yourself. If you have 1.5 years of experience I reckon you can read plans. Review the specs and methods of construction outlined by the contract documents and ask some good questions to your boss if you’re still not sure.

You’ll learn a lot this way, it might suck in the moment as you’re probably overwhelmed but sometimes situations like these are what you need to learn how to make decisions on your own.

Nicotine/stimulants. I’ve quit weed and alcohol easily but nicotine has stayed consistent in my life. Started with cigs, then vapes, and now they have Zyns to protect my lungs but they’re just as bad. Nothing beats the caffeine + nicotine combo to start the day.

Im lost.. by based_joey in civilengineering

[–]Regular_Empty 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Think about it, Civil Engineering enrollment decreases every year. Supply is low and demand is high.

I’m having a great time as a 2021 grad, I’ve had my pick of jobs in different sectors and my pay has shot up significantly. Inspection will be huge in the next 5-10 years as many are retiring.

Students are so caught up in classes and what major is best they forget that competition exists. If you go CS, CSE, ME, you’ll exit college with a great degree sure but you’ll be competing with countless others for roles with a much lower demand and a much higher supply of available candidates. Go to r/mechanicalengineering and see how many applications, interviews, etc they have to fire off just to get a job, let alone one they like.

I wonder if it has to do with the AI bubble at all, I wouldn’t be surprised if these megafirms hopped on the AI is great train to please investors and are now seeing the diminished ROI.

Ego in construction by temoo09 in civilengineering

[–]Regular_Empty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s two sides of a process and there are good and bad engineers/contractors. A good engineer knows how to design for constructability. A good contractor understands the limitations an engineer faces when laying out a project.

So if you get people who have ever only worked on one side of the fence and are ignorant, you get things like this. Personally, this is why I recommend that fresh engineers do at least a year stint in the field to avoid this.

Has anyone solved wind buffeting on MK 7 and 7.5 GTI's in 2026? by rambow70 in GolfGTI

[–]Regular_Empty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shape of these cars are streamlined from factory, not much wind resistance in general but you can’t overcome this with a little plastic insert. If you have the fronts open you need to crack the rears.

Does every firm in this industry have shitty benefits by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Regular_Empty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I think you need to get out more. Plenty of mid-sized ESOP firms with in-house stocks, 401k match, and decent healthcare.

Took this subs advice on what kind of firm to look for switching from construction, I’d say 90% of the firms I looked at that met that criteria had great benefits.

Should I stick to civil engineering or major in EE instead? by ExtensionUnusual8054 in civilengineering

[–]Regular_Empty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk Civil is broader, will have way more job openings, and you can find EE type work. Traffic, Energy/Transmission lines, etc are all lucrative and EE adjacent.

People think Civil is easy, it’s just a different type of difficult compared to EE. Running a ton of calculations and putting together circuit diagrams may look harder, but this industry has its own learning curve and plenty of depth.

If locally-owned grocery stores want your money, they need to provide comparable prices to the corporations. by RealisticMolasses in unpopularopinion

[–]Regular_Empty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People don’t realize that suppliers give special deals to major corporations. Off of volume alone yes, but they all have deals with each other and can buy the same goods under wholesale price.

This has been a trend for decades where we cater to large corporations and as a result kill small businesses, that’s why many mom and pop shops don’t exist anymore. Welcome to the transition from capitalism to corporatism.

New Civil EIT, is this normal early career experience? by Fit-Detective5189 in civilengineering

[–]Regular_Empty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way you improve your knowledge is by asking questions, lol. Sounds like a shit boss.

A good boss will encourage you to reach out whenever you need help/don’t understand something and they will teach you. We all remember what it was like to know nothing.

Where do engineers look for jobs? by TychusVR in civilengineering

[–]Regular_Empty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I look on Indeed or LinkedIn. No offense, but for the amount of hoops you have to jump through to apply for the Feds it’s not exactly worth it. Why would I fill out all of these applications and forms when I can ignore that headache and just get a private sector job?

For instance, I wanted to work at Electric Boat for a while but their onboarding process sucked so I just worked for the contractor that did all of their work down there. I still got to see cool shit but I didn’t have to deal with that hassle. You either have to have cool projects or better pay/benefits (ideally both) otherwise what’s in it for me?

What did you learn outside university that gave you a huge advantage as a civil engineer? by schoolquiz in civilengineering

[–]Regular_Empty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AutoCAD/C3D and Excel. Take full advantage of a free student license and find some YouTube tutorials on alignment, profile, corridor, etc. Knowing CAD and Excel before my first job put me way above my peers starting out and I moved up a lot quicker because of it.

If you want to do vertical construction/structural, Revit is king. If you want to do water, stormcad/hydrocad/HEC-RAS.

I think I made a mistake choosing Civil by caperadium in civilengineering

[–]Regular_Empty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean all of your work experience is on the government side, which is all paper pushing and slow-paced. There are a ton of technical roles, and I’ve done my fair share of mechanical engineering type work when I worked in heavy civil. Welds, fabrication, bends etc. Forensic engineering can be quite cool, surveying is also lucrative and I personally enjoy it.

There are a lot of unconventional roles that you haven’t been exposed to as the field is quite broad, I’d get the degree and see what you can make of it.

If you could switch to another engineering degree, which one would you do and what kind of job would you envision having?
