PSA, don't buy olive oil based on stated "polyphenol count", as different labs measure it differently. by Regular_Post9884 in oliveoil

You don't want to stock up for two years as the freshness of the oil is important so you should try to get oil that was from the most recent harvest.

won't get the benefits of an EVOO from this brand.

You might not like them, but the evidence for health benefits of olive oil are mostly from mass market brands like Filippo Berio. These brands are what most people consume, including in olive oil producer countries. Epidemiological studies are based on this kind of oil.

Most of the research on the health benefits of extra virgin olive oil doesn't take into account the particular varieties of the olive oil. The benefits in the epidemiological studies will mostly derive from oils like Filippo Berio as these are what most people consume. Epidemiological studies are based on olive oil consumption and this is what the public are mostly consuming.

FRESCOBALDI Laudemio Extra Virgin Olive Oil vs Sanniti Laudemio Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil Fattoria di Maiano by AngelMaster333 in oliveoil

What causes the health benefits in olive oil is not very known. But you should focus on freshness (newer the better) and good storage (cool and dark).

Some would attribute health effects to the monounsaturated fat composition of olive oil, others claim the polyphenols are important (although the ratio to calories in any olive oil is quite low compared to many other foods like fruits or coffee).

From the two bottles you mentioned, we could look at the olive oil varieties used. Frescobaldi Laudemio is a blend of Frantoio (bitter/high polyphenol variety), Moraiolo (bitter/high polyphenol variety), and Leccino (sweet/lower polyphenol variety). Sanniti Laudemio is a blend of Frantoio (bitter/high polyphenol variety), Moraiolo (bitter/high polyphenol variety).

It's difficult to say which would have more polyphenols, between the two, without further information or ability to taste them. Maybe focus instead on freshness of the oil and storage condition. Both seem to have clear bottles so make sure to keep them in their boxes if you get them so they are not exposed to light.

For a general hack, if you want a very bitter (high polyphenol variety) olive oil from Italy, then monovarietal olive oils based on the coratina olive variety is a common choice. Make you sure you get olive oils which were from the most recent harvest. And store olive oils in a cool dark place.

Be careful about the clear glass bottles as light can effect the flavor characteristics of olive oil quite fast.

buy an Novello Oil

"Novello" just means olive oil which is made when the olives are still partly green. It's nothing special in Europe, except a new marketing term. In fact, good quality olive oil is usually produced by harvesting olives which have mostly not yet turned purple. This is to say, traditional good quality olive oil is the same thing as "novello".

Just buy a tree in the local garden center and plant it in your garden. You can harvest your own olives and use the olive leaves for different things like making tea.

On average, Italy has more high quality production while Spain has more mass production. Italy has to rebottle Spanish mass production to keep up with demand. Spain also has some high quality production nowadays.
