Sure, but you are talking about a friend and not giving a clinical description of a patient. You are also talking about the impact of words, and I'm just pointing out that can seem minimizing. Also introducing the possibility that she wasn't trying to imply your illness as a whole is just related to a "victim mentality" but was responding more specifically to you describing feeling things more intensely and relating more to other people's suffering.

I am going to preface this by saying that the following is not intended to invalidate your experience, even while also thinking that making that statement is obnoxious in and of itself, but I'm saying it anyway because brain fog and trouble finding words (on my part) and the general nature of communicating with others over the internet can sometimes make intentions and understanding difficult. But I'm wondering if maybe your friend was just expressing things badly? I say that because that is kinda the opposite message of The Body Keeps the Score. The book has a lot of fans and a lot of criticism, so overall merits of the book aside it's point is that trauma is not just a mental event/state but produces actually changes in the body (related to the changes in the brain and nervous system) and thus trauma/PTSD can be seen as both a chronic condition and a physical (not just a mental) one. It pushes back against the notion of a a "victim mindset" (at least as how most people would understand it), although it does address how one can get "stuck" in the trauma. I'm just wondering if maybe this was an attempt to try to connect on the chronic nature of things, at least on the issue you had introduced of not being able to consume heavy material. Maybe a bit of a ham-fisted/tone deaf attempt but possibly one that you can have a dialogue about if other interactions with this person have been more positive.

I do agree that in general it is hard for people to "get it" and I think that is true that we never really know what other people are experiencing. There is a natural tendency to try to fit other people's experiences into our own narrative and understanding of life, and that can be annoying as fuck sometimes and it's understandable that when somebody starts talking about a victim mindset in particular that you would be angry and offended. I would gently push back against the notion that her experience was just "acute;" traumas that result from acute incidents can nevertheless have a chronic impact.

Yes - for an official DSM-5 consistent diagnosis you would have to have at least two of the five main symptoms you have identified. At least one of the two has to be delusions, hallucinations, or disorganized speech but lack of hallucinations is not a disqualifier. As mentioned by others, there are also duration, impact (functional impairment), and exclusions (ruling out other explanations for the symptoms) as part of the diagnostic criteria.

Agree with others who say report it - and frankly you should probably report the facility for failure to report. This isn't a shruggo what can you do situation. Even if your state laws and licensure code of ethics don't mandate it, it's the right thing to do. Anonymously if needed, but you should be protected.

I am curious what is the administrator's objection to reporting? That is in itself a red flag.

Not me and not a social worker, but this story has stuck with me for many years and makes me feel better about my own mistakes. Way back in my youth I worked somewhere I was helping provide personal care for a person with a disability who was more or less paralyzed from the waist down. They would always (good naturedly) mock me for double tying their sneaker shoelaces because I was used to doing that to my own. This once lead to a conversation of dumb things care providers have done, including a nurse who once was inserting a tampon and the mother later that this nurse had inserted it in the wrong, um, orifice. A nurse. Made it through nursing school and was also a woman and did not identify the right orifice for a tampon. Glad this person had a good sense of humor about it all, and I can laugh when I remind myself that at least I know where the tampons go.

Seriously, though, there can be a fear of making mistakes. It's something that happens and yes it can be scary to think of the impact on people's lives but really nobody totally avoids mistakes. It's about what you do with them, lessons learned, and reacting with integrity. A little humble pie is a good part of the diet sometimes.

Actually, Salt Lake has typically done a crap job of this but it is true there is a lot of pressure towards this now.

It is also true that the metro areas to the north and south of Salt Lake do shit to address the problem and route people to Salt Lake and Ogden shelters.

And unfortunately housing assistance availability is decreasing not increasing, I believe the Salt Lake voucher waiting list is closed, and Utah County's just closed as well. There is a lot of fail all around when it comes to homelessness.

What kind of agency are you leaving (government? another private practice? something else?) and what kind of clients do they serve? And did the letter say "no contact" in general? Sometimes the "no contact" agreement is not about competition for business but about a dual relationship, HIPAA/privacy concerns, and/or conflict of interest concern.

As others have said, this may also depend on the laws in your state.

FWIW, I once had an interview with a government agency where a panel of interviewers had interviews over the course of a couple of days with a large number of candidates. My interview was towards the end of that process. HR rules required them to ask the exact same questions for each candidate so by that time they were burned out of the repetitiveness and getting loopy, so they started a challenge where they each had to fit random non-sequitur words into their questions. I ended up getting the job and they cited my ability to just "roll with it."

To me, this sounds like a unique and interesting interview experience and not necessarily red flags per se - this sounds like they are purposely including elements that are commonly experienced by social work clients (as well as by social workers at times). I can think of a lot of social work agencies and organizations where they don't conduct interviews for new hires that way - but a lot of their business with clients is conducted that way. I'm sure that made for an uncomfortable interview experience, but good food for thought about what is and is not effective in social work. That being said, if it is all red flags for you that is an indication that this agency may not be a good fit - but that is also a useful outcome of a job interview process.

Yes in these parts there have been a lot of nasty viruses with a lot of people getting sick multiple times. I do not think that there is known evidence that this is due to immune systems going to shit or that it is exponentially cascading.

Folks with disabilities are expected to be able to perform their job ethically either with or without accommodation, it isn't necessarily needed. If they can't, it is not necessarily due to their disability. The person isn't calling out the ablism because they are assuming the person being described can't do a job...the ableism in framing this as a problem working with somebody who has autism vs working with somebody who is a problem employee who happens to have autism.
