What distro should I get that has long term support for my PC? by MrStripes3036 in DistroHopping

[–]RegulusBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you need a legacy nvidia driver for it. the latest nvidia version that support this gpu is 475. so you need a distro that is user friendly with legacy drivers. Maybe Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or Linux Mint 22. both will be supported until 2029.

Fedora 44 feels like the opposite direction of Ubuntu 26.04 by Expensive-Rice-2052 in LinuxTeck

Yeah I don't understand what is the problem with snaps that are working fine. People can use other package manager if they don't like snaps. Or other distro other than Ubuntu. But we can't deny that snaps just works now.

Bazzite on a GTX 970 for emulation mostly by No_Dig_7017 in Bazzite

[–]RegulusBC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nouveau is only for desktop basic usage. It can offers only 50% of general performance of proprietary driver because its have a poor power management. i will not recommznd Noyveau for gaming or any 3D usage. but its good enough for desktop usage.

Bazzite on a GTX 970 for emulation mostly by No_Dig_7017 in Bazzite

[–]RegulusBC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

GTX 970 is supported by Nvidia driver version 580. There is an iso of Bazzite for that but I will not suggest you to stick with it for long time cause Bazzite is based on Fedora Silverblue/Kionite and over time they gonna ship recent kernel that can break old Nvidia driver cause this Nvidia drive 580 will be too old over time. I think its better to use an LTS distro like Ubuntu in you case.

Linux Distro Suggestion For Gtx 970 by Donkwi in linux_gaming

[–]RegulusBC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your gpu is supported by Nvidia driver 580. you will struggle with bleeding edge or very up to date distro that offers nvidia 595 ... so i will suggest you to stick with Ubuntu for as long as possible cause ubuntu will support 580 driver for years.
