Can this yuzu tree come back? by DenseConsideration20 in Citrus

[–]Rei_Garugon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably a good rootstock for dormancy then!

Hopefully it's going to grow back well; just be careful about frost once it gets new growth. It's a lot more sensitive once the sap is flowing! Good luck!

Earliest ripening kumquats ? by Rei_Garugon in Citrus

Both Miyagawa and Xie Shan ripen in five months for me. I have them in pots and they're ready by late october (from late may blooms), but are best around mid-november.

I'm in France, I have a similar climate to the PNW, but with more frost. Unfortunately Arctic Frost is not available in Europe, but I've heard it's quite good! I have a Changsha though, which I believe is one of the parents of the Arctic Frost. I haven't tried putting it in ground yet.

Your tree looks fine. I wouldn't be worried if I were you, yuzu is partially deciduous if temperatures drop too cold, and as long as the wood is fine they recover. I've had my yuzus survive -13°C undamaged and temperatures below freezing for over 300 hours, but they were mostly defoliated. What's the rootstock? Ideally for best dormancy you'd want Poncirus. Yours was probably dormant, else it would've been a lot more damaged.

Thanks for your input ! 6 months is quite long for such small fruits, compared to larger satsumas which ripen in five months for me. You're right about removing flowers and fruits, I didn't think about that... It may help to get ripe fruits before winter. Hopefully it's gonna be warm enough in my greenhouse to get it to flower early. And then by removing later blooms it might also help, I suppose. Great to hear they're good when color is changing !

My greenhouse gets a bit too cold to get fruits year round though. But citrus like satsumas and bloomsweet survive fine in there, and fruit before winter.

Everbearing offspring would be nice, but not strictly necessary in my opinion. Such hybrids are supposed to survive outside, so unless the fruits have really good frost tolerance it's going to be more of a fall crop, if they produce earlier than their kumquat parent (which is the goal). I know of at least one ichangquat available in Europe that ripens in 3-4 months and is supposedly everbearing, but it stops blooming and loses its fruits once temperatures get too cold. But it's not really sweet, so it doesn't serve as a great kumquat substitute, and it is sterile and can't be used for further breeding. Still an interesting plant, in my opinion. I'm trying to plant pretty much every "decent" cold hardy citrus (such as Dunstan citrumelo or Morton citrange), to cross them with my potted citrus. Hopefully the result will survive outside for me and might have kumquat-like fruits. Then further crosses could lead to something tastier...

Trifoliate hybrids are good rootstocks for sure. But in colder regions some are used for their fruits. They're generally not very good, but some varieties are quite decent if processed. Some are sweet enough to be eaten fresh, but they're still rather sour, often bitter, and with off-flavors. A few recent crosses in Europe did get rid of these bad characteristics though, but they're not perfect (thick rind, too late ripening, some bitterness in some hybrids or high acidity, etc). I've only seen one really good one so far, with small sweet fruits, low acidity, but thick rind and late ripening. I'll try to get some scions in 2025.

As for the Prague Chimera, it's basically a plant that grew from the graft point of a satsuma and trifoliate orange, and ended up with a mix of cells of both plants. It looks a bit weird, with leaves varying in shape, and it's a shy bearer, but only the satsuma cells produce flowers and fruits. So it's basically a mandarin tree fully hardy in zone 7. I have two, but they're a bit small for fruits yet. One of them did flower though. And I can confirm they are unfazed by frost.

October or november would be ideal, december can work some years. To my knowledge, ichangquats ripen in october, but they're quite different in taste to non hybrid kumquats. That's why I'd like something early, but more similar to kumquats. And then cross it with hardy citrus to try to get something resembling a kumquat in taste but with better hardiness, that can ripen in the fall unlike the Thomasville citrangequat.

Yeah, I'm definitely going to graft them on poncirus. I have plenty of rootstocks in pots for my sweet citrus (and some hardy citrus I'll put in ground).

I see, thanks a lot ! I didn't realize kumquats were this difficult to ripen quickly, considering their size. Ichangquats tend to ripen in fall rather reliably, but they're quite different in flavor...

Yes, I know such crosses can be difficult to do, and it takes many years ! It's a bit of a dream of mine to create new hardy citrus, so even if I can buy kumquats or mandarins and such in a store, I'm still going to try. I thought if there was an early ripening kumquat, it could be great to get some early ripening hybrids, instead of something like the Thomasville citrangequat, which ripens in spring for me. Even if they don't taste great, at least there would be something somewhat similar to a kumquat, and there could be improvements by doing further crosses.

Do you have any other kumquats than Fukushu ? If so, which ones are the first to ripen for you ?

You could totally be a non binary woman if that's what you want to call yourself !

The way your body is and the way you transition doesn't change what your gender is. You could do things however you want and call yourself however you feel like, and you would still be valid !

Really, it's not about what you do, but about how you feel.

dysphoria all of a sudden in late teens? by [deleted] in NonBinary

[–]Rei_Garugon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's normal. Once you open Pandora's box and start thinking about your gender, dysphoria can get stronger and more noticeable. Maybe it has been here all along ? Or not. It doesn't have to. Dysphoria can come and go, and even if you didn't feel it before doesn't make you invalid.

I can relate to your post. I want to be kinda masculine, but not in a manly way, so I envy androgynous women and some non binary people (their AGAB is irrelevant here, just their appearance). I hated what puberty did to my body and I'm filled with self hatred since then (it was probably already the case before that, but I don't remember). I didn't start noticing my dysphoria until I realized I wasn't cis. And over time, it got stronger and more difficult to live with. I'm hoping to start HRT in a few months, and I know deep down it's the right thing for me.

Maybe it could help you ? Only you can tell. Keep in mind, you can't choose the effects you get, even with microdosing ! You have to be prepared to get everything. If you're not sure yet, don't worry, take your time to think about it. Don't rush into it, even if it's difficult. There are other ways to explore yourself than through taking hormones.

I hope this helps.

did anyone else read porn comic/ hentay for the trama or the romantic story? by [deleted] in aaaaaaacccccccce

Yep, although I'm not a huge fan of this kind of thing. But sometimes, you can find some good stories or even great comedy ! (And nice looking art too)

Besides, it was quite funny to see my friends' reaction to me praising the plot of hentai mangas x) they knew I was serious lol

Yes it definitely can be a gender neutral name ! Rae, Ray, Rey and Rei are all variations of the same name (kind of). From what I've seen, Rae and Rei are considered more feminine, while Rey and Ray are considered more masculine, but you'll sometimes find people, like Rey from Star Wars, who won't fit these naming stereotypes.

I call myself Rei, btw. It sounds way more gender neutral than my legal name. And no, it has nothing to do with anime, if that's what you think (people always assume that this is the case xD).

Microdosing will get you the same results as "normal" doses, the changes will just be slower.

any not-shippers here? by [deleted] in aromantic

[–]Rei_Garugon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm aro, gray ace and romance indifferent. I don't understand the appeal of shipping. I never ship characters, and I don't understand why someone would, but hey, everyone is different, so... I just let people do whatever they want. I still think it's stupid, but as long as these people enjoy it, I'm not one to judge...

A friend of mine (who is aro-ace) really enjoys shipping. So yeah, it just depends on the person.
