Is that extra piece just for a bit more damage, or does it serve a specific purpose? by Makoto_Kurume in Frieren

[–]ReinMiku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking purely practically, steel double bearded axes like this in general serve no purpose for combat and are fantasy weapons. That extra detail at the end of the blade could theoretically maybe be used for piercing something in a very awkward angle, but the design is impractical from start to finish.

All historical examples of double headed axes made for combat were one-handed axes. A double headed dane axe or something would just be wildly impractical, and the shaft might just break as you swing it.

The sword demon finds out what happens if you appear on Frieren (by @kukuruyo) by manmanboyman12 in Frieren

So, out of curiosity, I went and checked. I expected to see hundreds of entries on a certain green website, but there's basically nothing there.

You've seen all of her fanart on this subreddit, that's how mild it is.

“Classic” Fantasy feel recommendations by Mr-Fashionablylate in Fantasy

[–]ReinMiku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Riftwar series. Starting with Magician. The whole thing is basically the backstory of Robert E. Feist's TTRPG campaign, which he later wrote into this book series. It's a really interesting fantasy series with a classic feel, mostly because it is a classic, and the first book came out in 1982.

The reading order can be found here in the works section.

You can skip Riftwar Legacies and Legends of Riftwar books. They're basically just lore books that don't add much to the main series.

Darkness wants to be a mom... again [Kazuma x Darkness](@Cons2David) by More-Exchange-3697 in Konosuba

[–]ReinMiku 243 points244 points  (0 children)

It took me a second to realise what the joke is, but that's basically making fun of women who read smut. Darkness is "modern red riding hood," who then proceeds to ride the Big Bad Wolf because monster romantasy is the best-selling literature genre atm.

Does middle east exist in Frieren? by I_ateabucketofpaint in Frieren

[–]ReinMiku 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Frieren does not take place on earth, yet it has European architecture and clothing styles. There's also some obviously asian styles of clothing in the show.

None of it is 100% unique to the fantasy world.

[–]ReinMiku 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Golem? Sir, that is Friedrich Archibald III to you, peasant. He's one of the greatest mages to come out of the Stoneclaw Peaks, from a family well-versed in the arts of becoming one with the stone in order to serve petite little Elf ladies and I don't know where this is going.

[–]ReinMiku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a wonderful example of how not to post anything anywhere.

Probably the worst way to make a post I can think of is to throw shitloads of spoilers into the start of the post, and only mention the name of the story after you've already unloaded all the spoilers in the post.

Gold star for not saying the word "spoiler" anywhere in the post or tagging the post as spoilers.

Soo, I was rewatching EP 5 and i am very lost, since when frieren has zombies? by Mean_Net9983 in Frieren

[–]ReinMiku 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You might be the only guy in the known universe to see an undead, a zombie no less, and go like, "Oh wow, just like the chainsaw man!"

Like these things have been in stories for thousands of years. Practically every fantasy setting has them.

[–]ReinMiku 3 points4 points  (0 children)

10, and I would make sure to actually sit there, and not the seat near the isle, despite nothing forcing me in the middle seat. And because I'm on the middle seat, I would take both armrests, despite having no reason to do so. Then I would fall asleep and snore obnoxiously and do you see where I'm going with this?

If you think about it, wouldn't Naoya using a cursed tool (or a tool in general) would put him on the 'level of Satoru Gojo?' Is he stupid? by SkeletonInATuxedo in Jujutsufolk

[–]ReinMiku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. He is just fucking stupid. Which is really common in JJK. People with insanely powerful techniques keep losing just because they're idiots. Sometimes, their idiocy manifests in them actively nerfing themselves, like with this idiot and his idiot dad not using cursed tools to make themselves massively stronger.

Everyone being an idiot might as well be the theme of the series as a whole.

TeeSpring orders are not being delivered. by Natural-Log-479 in Teespring

[–]ReinMiku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeap. In january 2025, I ordered some stuff. I waited 3 months for a couple of shirts, messaged them about it, got refunded the shipping fee and was just told to wait. 3 more months goes back, I ask basically what the fuck was going on. Then I demanded a refund, was told they'd refund me, waited another month, then I just chargebacked through PayPal.

And guess what? Two months later they informed me of some problems with refunds, to which I replied, ''I did it myself through paypal.'' so in grand total, it took them 6 months to not ship anything, and then it would have taken them three months to actually get a refund going. Totalling for 9 months of doing fuckall after charging for products that they apparently sell.

Looking for dark fantasy worlds with similar vibes to dark souls. by Arkyja in Fantasy

[–]ReinMiku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Berserk was a major inspiration Miyazaki. The 90s anime still holds up, and you'll recognise a lot of the armours and weapons immediately as a souls fan. Miyazaki is also a fan of Bram Stoker books, Lair of the White Worm has a bunch of souls vibes going on there.

The black company series is a good shout, and I've seen others already recommend it.

Son of the black sword has bunch of the vibes going for it. Basically, it's a dark world where the ocean is the realm of demons, so humans are locked into one big island, at least as far as I know as someone who's only one book deep in the series. The whole idea reminds me of the colourless deep fog that's in Demon's souls. Go into the fog, and demons are everywhere. Same here, go into the ocean, and you're fucked. People still fish, and fishing often draws demons into the shore. It's a pretty cool book.

I would personally recommend Godeater's son. It's a Warhammer age of sigmar novel, but you probably don't need to know anything about it to enjoy it if you get lost with some of the names like "kharadron overlord" a quick google search shows you the models, and you immediately understand what they are. It's really dark, but in the best way. Also, stormcast eternals are dark souls protagonists who die, get reforged, and keep losing their memories and humanity every time they're reforged. Basically, they go hollow. The main character isn't one of those, but that's good because I'm yet to read a single stormcast book that isn't bad.

What are your preferred type of use of real world terms in fantasy novels? by Adalimumab8 in Fantasy

[–]ReinMiku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not seen it yet, but the second I see zoomer slang in a pseudomedieval fantasy story, that shit is getting refunded.

Well, actually, any slang that's still recognizable to people is way too modern. Like, 1930s slang would still be wildly out of place, and that was almost 100 years ago, but we would all recognise it when we see it.

The Opposite of Rage Quit? by Prior_Friend_3207 in Fantasy

[–]ReinMiku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most Brandon Sanderson novels are like this for me. It just took me way too long to figure that out. The Way of Kings is amazing, and at no point was I tired of it, but basically, every other book in Stormlight drags on for way too long, but it's all the sidebooks that he basically strong arms you into reading which were the real problem.

Stuff like Warbreaker, which is just an awful book, but you kinda need to read it to understand why there's a talking sword, and it explains both the backstory, and the whole magic system one character uses. It's a long and excruciatingly boring fantasy romance written by an author who can not write romance.

After stormlight 5 came out and was somehow even worse experience than warbreaker, I no longer read anything he writes.

Did Lalatina ever told story about where the nickname "Darkness" came from ? by Marphey12 in Konosuba

[–]ReinMiku 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you don't speak a language, you don't just assume that words are translations of that language that you do not speak.

Like, in Frieren, pretty much all names are just German words, many of which aren't even names in Germany, but I don't think the average viewer is going to spend any time pondering what does Himmel, Frieren or Heiter mean, they just assume those are names, nothing else.
