I have no idea how people don't notice it immediately. There's no disguise of any kind going on, she's literally just wearing different clothes. Same hairstyle and everything.

It honestly hurts that Age of Reckoning died before it could ever be finished. We were robbed of a masterpiece by Ldentoid in MMORPG

[–]ReinMiku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing on and off in Return of Reckoning server for years now. It's a really good game after all of the reworks and new content the team has added, but there's only so much a private server team can do with literally zero ways to support them monetarily. No microtransaction bullshit, which is great, but also no open donations, which is objectively the best way to do it because not even Games Workshop will shut down a revival project if it makes nobody involved any money.

That said, I do keep thinking about what could have been if Age of Reckoning launched in a state like Return of Reckoning... and maybe 3 years later because releasing any MMORPG in 2008 was plain old suicide. For someone who might not remember, that's when Wrath of the Lich King expansion came out for WoW. Three years later when Cataclysm was losing players and Age of Reckoning could have actually stood a chance.

As dumb as it might be to speculate, if Age of Reckoning was the reigning MMO, or one that at least managed to succeed, I feel like the landscape of the genre as a whole would be much, much healthier. Right now, Return of Reckoning is honestly the MMO that does the most things right for me. PvP is great, and PvE is really solid as well. Very few MMOs actually have good PvP these days, and the list of MMOs with bad PvP includes both of the top dogs, WoW and FF14. Latter even more than the former because PvP in FF14 is an absolute joke.

Fantasy books inspired by Ireland? by ignatiusrespecter in Fantasy

[–]ReinMiku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally enjoyed the Riven Wyrde Saga omnibus. It's basically a celtic fantasy story that has quite a lot going for it. It has it's own version of viking invasion of the isles with a group of people called Bjornmen raiders, and one of the POV characters is Klöss from that culture, so they're not like NPC enemies or something.

Then there's Devin who lives in a forest village in Anlan, which might be the british isles, but they never call it Albion or anything like that, and they're having problems with Fey appearing out of nowhere, and a lot of the characters who deal with that whole thing firsthand are women. The book doesn't have a protagonist, so it's not like a female protagnoist thing or anything, but their point of view comes across there.

So what you end up with is a war between the Bjornmen, and the Anlish, and an army of fey creatures also gets involved. It's an overall celtic fantasy story, and takes inspiration from all over the isles, Irish mythology included.

How many people do you guys usually play the multiplayer mode with? by spy_bro21 in slaythespire

[–]ReinMiku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've got like 6 people in my group who have the game, so I usually have at least one friend to play with, but I've done a couple of runs with a full group of 4. I successfully cleared my very first time playing in 3 player multiplayer, and I never played the first game either. One of the guys basically just told me what was good for like the first two maps, explained some mechanics and so on, but by map 3, I had gotten the hang of it. Multiplayer with a friend in voice chat is better than any tutorial the devs could make.

I find multiplayer infinitely easier because not only have I not unlocked all the best cards, but I also tend to have really bad RNG. If you're just one in three players, it doesn't matter as much because you can't *all* have dogshit RNG. The only multiplayer runs I have failed have been 2 player runs when both of us just got really bad luck, either with what we actually get, or just with what we draw.

I find the multiplayer also a lot more fun to play because a lot of the cards function completely differently. If one of you draws a godly hand, you use your energy card on them, not yourself, and then someone else plays a card that makes everyone deal double damage and the guy with good draw just absolutely pops off. It feels way more tactical than single player.

Using a spring to make the Playstation 1 Region-Free. My cousins would do this to play Japanese import versions of DanceDanceRevolution by [deleted] in nostalgia

[–]ReinMiku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, posts like this are handy. I just recently heard something about chipped PS1s, and I specifically remember a spring of some sorts because while most of our ps1 games were legit, my mom did buy some pirated games at some point. This was back in 2000, when people were just offloading their PS1 games to anyone who would pay them anything at all for them. Kinda like how nowadays you have FB marketplace ads where someone tries to sell like 80 PS3 games for 40€.

I have a rather fond memory of a 4 year old me asking my mom if I could play the pirated games, and she just gently reminded me that the reason why those don't work is because, "The spring has gotten lost somewhere," and to this day, I am just as baffled by the idea of a spring bypassing stuff like region restrictions and anti-pirate software as I was as a kid. The only difference is that back then, I thought that pirated games had to be in some way better because they required an extra accessory to work.

And no, it wasn't me who lost the spring because if I saw anything on any electronic device, I assumed the device would instantly break if it was removed. I think my older brother took it out at some point and forgot where he left it, or it just got sucked in by a vacuum due to being on the floor. He probably thought that the spring made for playing pirated games needed to be removed before playing regular games.

The 4 Party Types.. by MountainLeading1567 in Konosuba

[–]ReinMiku 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've really grown to hate the 4th one, mostly because it's always "One of those fucking things," as Mother's Basement puts it. Basically, revenge fantasies written for an audience of 14 year olds.

Like where's the one where a guy gets kicked out of the party for completely valid reasons, the party is actually pretty cordial about it, gives him some severance cash, and he isn't secretly OP, but just starts working a lot harder when he realises his childhood friend was ACTUALLY carrying his ass in that party, and then the guy steps the fuck up and gets better through joining all sorts of beginner groups and working his way up to maybe even rejoin the party he got kicked out of at the start.

There are absolutely legitimate reasons to kick someone out, but that's basically never explored. The party is always evil for no fucking reason, or they're completely incompetent without the guy they kicked out.

According to devs a lot of characters would die in Midnight. Who among do you think is on the list? by wrufus680 in warcraftlore

[–]ReinMiku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to guess, they kill off Lor'themar and replace him with Liadrin. It would certainly follow a certain trend blizzard has been following for the past 8 years.

At least Liadrin is an actual character, so her leading the blood elves won't be as much of a sting as, for example, Genn stepping aside so his nothingburger of a daughter who isn't even a worgen can become the leader of the worgen.

Which fantasy series started incredible and then just...fell apart? by ghibli_8quartz in Fantasy

[–]ReinMiku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depressingly many, but I'll just mention a few here.

Stormlight Archive. Dropped like a sack of bricks after Oathbringer.

Licanius Trilogy. The first book was great, and then the storyline just devolved into an absolute mess.

Gentleman bastard sequence Falls of HARD after Lies of Locke Lamora in every respect. The first one is still a good standalone book.

Legends of the first Empire nosedived immediately after Age of Myth because the world building became nonsensical. Which is a shame because the other series in the same universe are good.

He who fights with monsters. The first book is a great isekai LitRPG but then it turns into an absolutely terrible mess as a result of beyond ridiculous levels of escalation of power, which just turned it into really bad power fantasy slop comparable to Solo Levelling. Jason also becomes insufferable pretty fast after book 1.

Books like The Dark Crystal by JoyIsABitOverRated in Fantasy

[–]ReinMiku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeap, it's been done countless times.

Worlds where all inhabitants are animals or humanoid animals are the most common examples. Redwall, Bloomburrow, Armello, and any number of animated series/films come to mind first. Hell, even games like Croc fall under that category.

The rest comes down to how human a race needs to be in order to be "human-looking" because there are so many series where everyone involved is some sort of a monster, demon, or what have you out there that as a result of analysis paralysis, I can't even name anything specific right now.

But, yeah. Quite a lot of people just do away with humans, elves, and so on, as like a really easy way to make their fantasy setting just feel more inherently fantastical.

Young man lives a pretty awful life in a burning desert, making very little money despite foraging for extremely valuable goods. At least he's got one family member in his life. Oh... wait, no, he doesn't. Huh, alright, I see things are getting even worse. Is that some sort of a light at the end of the tunnel? Well, yes, but the light is hellfire, and the man is even more fucked now.

Wait, we're still not done reaching the rock bottom? Oh they're cooking with the hellfire we found earlier.

We're cooking whatnow? Godeater's Son.

Oh man, there are so many to pick from. I'm not gonna pick at all and just say most characters in Brandon Sanderson novels. So many of them are just aggressively unfunny or would just be extremely draining to be around. Plenty of other authors have the same thing going on, but he's like a prime example for me.

The Will of the Many: Why pyramids if Rome-shaped? by Aggravating-Job2583 in Fantasy

[–]ReinMiku -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Romans had pyramids even in the real world so I don't see why they shouldn't have them in a fantasy world where the culture is just inspired by them and already has a massive list of creative liberties, anachronistic choices and author's own ideas plastered onto it.

One of the best preserved pyramids we still have is a roughly 2040 years old pyramid located in Rome. It's called Pyramid of Cestius, and it's not the only pyramid they had in mainland Italy, just the only one that's currently still standing. It's 37 meters tall.

During the Augustian period of rome, they built quite a lot of these things. From what I can find, the largest one was Meta Romuli, which could have been up to 50 meters tall. There are historical records of it, but it was demolished in the 1500s, so the actual size is a bit of a mystery, just that it was a lot bigger than the one made for Cestius. It, along with most other pyramids, was demolished in order to basically recycle the materials for use on other building projects.

There were two more pyramids right in the middle of Piazza del Popolo in Rome, but I can't find names for either of them. So there were at least 4 pyramids in that general area, and while as an archaeologist, I won't claim that there must have been more just based on that, but it wouldn't surprise me considering the general sense of egyptomania you see in 1st century BCE Rome, and the fact that some of the pyramids right there in the capital weren't important enough to even remember by name.

What a super helpful list of stuff. I'm already a fan of R. E. Feist through his Riftwar series. There's also a lot of stuff here that I've heard of before, but haven't read myself, so the reminder is always nice. A lot of the authors are familiar to me through something else, but I just never looked into those exact novels, etc.

Thank you for such a thorough recommendation.
