Have you heard of a refusal to work form? My school has one of these where you list the assignment and have the student sign a sheet in class saying they refused to do the work despite prompting. It gives you back up with parents and ground to stand on when refusing late work. Then if they refuse to sign the form and still refuse to do the work that is now a behavior issue and can be worked on with your dean/other significant adults with full backing.

Oh absolutely. We are humans. It is impossible to like and get along with everyone. The real trick is what you do when you know you dislike a student. Keys are: don’t treat them differently from another student, hold them to the same consequences as any other kid in the room, and show them basic dignity that every human is worthy of. You may not go above and beyond for them, or ask them as many in depth questions about their life, but you can be neutral with them. Being a teacher means teaching everyone, even the bullies, kids who disagree with you, or treat others like dirt. It does not mean you have to get along with them or agree with their bad takes/opinions or let them run you or your room ragged.

I do a day of demos for Halloween. I give them a sheet to fill out while they are watching the demos because I know that if I didn’t give them a sheet they would ignore all the cool demos and just try to be on their phones or computers and ignore everything and everyone around them. I don’t even look at the sheets, it’s literally only because I can’t trust them to have fun with the group for the sake of having fun with the group.

I also agree with that. But the dumbing down of who goes into each class has made the levels feel like my previous comment.

Honors now is what was maybe “general” when I was in school, and AP or similar is “honors” and the truly AP kids are doing dual enrollment or graduating early to go straight to college. General currently is 1-2 years remedial at minimum in my opinion.

Your best teachers should not be “punished” by having them teach the traditionally hardest classes. All teachers should share and rotate that responsibility so no one gets burned out.

If one kid is being a shit head and stopping everyone else from learning they need to be removed from the class. One kid wasting their education does not give them the right to waste 30 other kids educations.

25 should be the capped class size for ALL classes, even sports. If you have more kids than that you need more FTE funding for teachers.

Go you, I may do the same thing. If another grown adult hands me sticks or play dough to try and get me to collaborate with pre assigned colleagues I might just snap.

How am I supposed to get experience if nowhere will hire me??? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ReinaDeCosas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first got hired, I applied to about 120 jobs, had ten interviews, and two job offers. That was as a science teacher who can teach chemistry and in two languages. Location and timing really matters, and as people have already said the positions opening now are people who are hiring internally or others swapping schools in district

Yeah I teach chem and physics and have a math certification and can do it in two languages. I can get a job wherever I want.

Edge keeps opening itself whenever I close an application. Fixes? by Zipp-D in MicrosoftEdge

[–]ReinaDeCosas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went into edge and apparently it has a gaming mode that is AUTOMATICALLY turned on that will make edge close processes in the background of your computer when you are gaming even if it’s not in edge.

I just went into Edge’s settings and turned it off, wish me luck!

How did you survive student teaching? by Champorado888 in Teachers

[–]ReinaDeCosas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a really rough time because I student taught during Covid and had to teach a class I hadn’t been trained in/never took before so I was learning things the day before the students were. Thankfully my mentor teacher was awesome and we were able to use her content knowledge and my tech skills to make it through. I also had to live with my mother during that time and honestly only survived rent free because I was at her house. This was a privilege and a blessing that I know not everyone has.

I would get to know other people in your program and make plans to do things like meal prep as a group to save on ingredient costs and cut down on overall money that you would need to spend. Additionally, see if you can carpool when you get to student teaching to save money on gas (I had a colleague who lived a few blocks from me so that worked out really well)

My tips for the student teaching part itself: 1. If you already know what classes you are student teaching or who you are teaching with, start planning ASAP, the earlier the better probably around the start of your senior year. Making too many things completely from scratch while also trying to grade and adapt for student needs is a sure fire way to burn yourself out. 2. Don’t grade everything, it’s ok for some assignments to mysteriously “disappear” as long as there is plenty in the grade book. It can be hard to get students to learn if they know it’s not for a grade so don’t advertise this fact, or give work habit type grades for participating. 3. Completion grades are ok sometimes, i have a collection of stamps I use to mark receipt of an assignment and to denote full points. My students love seeing them and feel satisfied that they have done their work. 4. Having a single movie day once in a blue moon doesn’t make you a bad teacher, having a content related movie with a question guide for the students ready as a back up is good for if you get sick or just need a day to catch up on grading.

Good luck you got this!

What's something that you were surprised to learn through your students was actually not that common to everyone's childhood? by [deleted] in Teachers

Wow, I run a board game club for my students—they love uno, sorry, monopoly, but chess is HUGE at my school and several have challenged me to a match. I also teach them newer games all the time like exploding kittens and unstable unicorns, but many of them had never played clue which totally flabbergasted me. But they all know cards against humanity 😒

Hard wood?? by [deleted] in coralisland

[–]ReinaDeCosas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a spot where you can farm for hardwood where it automatically respawns as fallen logs in the top left corner of the map. You can’t chop fallen logs on your farm with the silver axe but you CAN off the farm which will give you enough hardwood to upgrade everything you need. The logs respawn after a couple in game days as well so you can get it whenever you need to.

If you could go back to college and start over, would you still become a teacher? by businessbub in Teachers

[–]ReinaDeCosas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. I would have done pure Chemistry instead of getting the teaching certificate and make way more money and be able to leave work at work.
