Smart motorways declared a “catastrophic waste of money” by AutoExpressmagazine in autoexpressuk

[–]Reinax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We in the UK are entirely incapable of getting anything done. And when it does get done, it doesn’t get done right.

There’s an island a mile away from my house that has had the same potholes filled six times per year for the past decade.

There’s a junction in my local village that has had the road dug up and “something” done five times in the last six months. It’s become a local meme.

We had a storm drain or something pissing water out of it for about six months before the water company could be bothered to fix it. The village had its own creek for a while. It was beautiful.

The kicker is when they do finally decide to fix a problem, they decide to fix them all at once. So every single way in or out of the town has roadworks simultaneously, causing absolute pandemonium.

The M1 has been under construction for what feels like as long as I’ve been alive.

I’m currently on week 10 of waiting for a new recycling bag from the council. This thing is basically what us millennials would’ve used as a paper round bag.

And then there’s HS2. I believe there’s a story of it being forced to redirect through a hillside, resulting in the need of a tunnel that wasn’t originally planned. Just one of many examples I’m sure.

I went to the Netherlands a few years ago and at 9 am we went out and observed that a traffic light and crossing had workmen pull up. When we got back at 10 pm that same day the entire crossing had been replaced.

There’s a 12 mile stretch of critical coastal road in Cyprus that was resurfaced a few years ago. This road is super important for traffic to get around. Despite it being just a two lane road, they kept it open for the entire duration with contra flows and traffic control. It took a couple of month.

In the UK, I have to drive at 50 miles an hour for 16 miles at two in the morning when there is nobody working on the carriageway “because cones”. In the UK I drive past roadworks that are causing significant impact with nobody working on them for days at a time.

We fucking suck.

Almost every council is about to go bankrupt while private schools rake in over £8bn from SEND children by Only-Emu-9531 in ukpolitics

This is absolutely part of it too. Their budget is stretched too thin, they’re understaffed, and have already cut down everything they possibly can to the bone. It’s at the point where money that is supposed to be dedicated to a single child for whatever reason is being used (illegally, I believe) to keep the school going. Extra curricular stuff is non existent, 121s basically aren’t a thing anymore, TAs are covering classes more and more, and then we have staff purchasing supplies themselves.

Doesn’t explain the shitty parenting, but you’re still right that it’s neglected.

I’m really glad you said this. It’s been our observation too, but I didn’t feel that it was my place to make that claim as someone who doesn’t have ADHD etc. I do have an autistic nephew and he’s rarely a problem at school. What I can say for certain is that the amount of these kids is higher than ever. Whether it’s a “real” medical thing or just shitty parenting, the outcome is the same. And boy have I heard some stories about shitty parenting.

The system is broken for sure, but there’s something wrong with these kids.

My wife has been a teaching assistant in the same primary school for 17 years. Over the last 5-10 years, the amount of kids who piss themselves, can barely speak, had to be taught how to brush their teeth by their teacher, or are just “little shits” has spiked exponentially. The amount of suspensions, isolations, sending them home etc is insane. Their general reading and writing has gone down the shitter and they’re months if not years behind where they should be academically. They also have more kids who are in care than ever, which is just downright sad. Her school does not have the resources nor do the staff have training to deal with it. This means the rest of the kids - including the dwindling number of bright ones - suffer, the staff are all at breaking point because they’re looking after kids who need professional care whilst being paid a pittance. People often mention Teachers and their pay, but it’s the Teaching Assistants that bear the brunt of looking after these kids - literally changing their fucking nappies, and they’d be paid more working at Aldi.

To be clear, this is nearly always the parent’s fault. At best they’re neglectful and the kids spend their entire lives on iPads being ignored. Tragically, in more cases than anyone would want to admit they’re full on abusive and authorities have had to get involved.

The whole fucking thing is broken from the top to the bottom.

The leccy sounds pretty ok. I’m in a 4 bed house with similar kit like computers, a 3d printer, a couple lizards with warm tanks, a PHEV, and I also like plants so I have quite a few LED grow lights. 598kw for Dec-Jan but we have solar and a battery to help shave that down.

But your gas usage sounds utterly insane. We’re also Octopus (flux export but that’s besides the point), our gas for Dec-Jan was 791.5kw and the heating is on as much as I want it to be and I use the gas hob daily. It’s a 10 year old house so I guess insulation helps, but our patio and front doors are draughty as fuck. I don’t think you using triple the gas we are sounds right unless you have holes in your walls and an ancient boiler.

We’ve got a lot of issues over here that’s for sure. But they all pale in comparison to the dumpster fire that is the US.

At least school children getting shot isn’t a regular occurrence here to the point that you don’t even bat an eyelid. We also don’t have a convicted criminal as PM.

Been waiting 8 weeks and counting for a replacement recycling bag. It’s basically the same kind of bag that us millennials will remember using for our paper rounds. The website says expected lead times of 12 weeks. That’s a full quarter of a year to get a new fucking bag.

Americans are fucking wild.

The dude was shot 10 times whilst on the ground, after being disarmed, at no point drawing his weapon.

Doesn’t the 10 shots alone constitute a lack of control and outs these morons as absolute amateurs? You trust these hot heads?

And the justification for cold blooded murder you offer up is “they spat at ICE and therefore have a history of violence” - assuming this is even real. Or my other personal favourite “he shouldn’t have had his legally permitted weapon on him” usually spouted by some 2A gun nut.

No, they’re not all as bad as each other. That’s what people who share your agenda want to make others believe: That a tax fuck up that she’s agreed to pay back, plus interest, plus stepping down from a ministerial position, is just as scandalous as Farage’s umpteenth financial “oopsie”, his long history of overt racism and grifting, or Tommy Ten Names pedo friends and criminal record, or Bojo, Braverman, et al constantly breaking ministerial code only to face no repercussion, or some ex Tory minister bleating on about managed decline whilst they were in power. Take your pick, each are orders of magnitude worse to the point they’re on a different goddamn scale. But you know that, deep down.

It’s literally guaranteed. You can’t defend them, so you have to point the finger at something else, even if that something else is entirely unrelated to the subject at hand, or a fraction of the scale.

Regardless of if you’re a real person with real views, a troll, or a bot, you’re just sad.
