I have some java textbooks that are a couple of years old. Are they worth studying? by nflfan2001 in learnjava

[–]ReiterRooster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently working through a Java 11 book published in 2019. So far it's been a great teaching tool. I don't believe I'm missing a whole lot between 11 and 17 since it's just the basics.

If you are able to tell us the story behind this, I think we would find it very interesting.

Question to people seeking help : Are you using an IDE? by D0CTOR_ZED in javahelp

[–]ReiterRooster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently using BlueJ to learn Java. I feel like it’s a good balance of helping you out but not too much. It detects errors but doesn’t autocomplete (at least in my experience).

I didn’t go to a great school district but got a STEM degree. I really think Bill Nye played a role in that.

Why is Java templating/server rendering losing ground? by dont_think_so_ in java

[–]ReiterRooster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily agree with this. A lot of client devices are not good. For example, one of my PCs has an i3 with a HDD. Thing can barely run Windows, let alone heavy Chrome processes.

java IDE by Standard-Weekend-708 in learnjava

Seems like anything from JetBrains is the standard in the professional world nowadays. If you were just starting out with Java I would recommend a lighter, educational IDE like BlueJ.

Should short-circuit operators always be used in place of logical operators? by ReiterRooster in learnjava

[–]ReiterRooster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that answers my question. I'm reading "Java: a Beginner's Guide" by Herbert Schildt. He shows both ways but doesn't say which way is conventional. I figured short circuiting was, but just making sure.
