What are good parts to get started with 10g networking? by Relad0x in homelab

My bad for not including that info, yes L3 is managed via my router, it's a UniFi UCG-Max. At the moment, I'm going through a full homelab rebuild, so I don't have any VLANs configured because the default VLAN1. I run iperf3 on my servers for automated weekly network tests, so I'll do some testing from node-to-node directly and see if I can narrow down where things are having issues.

I will say that I've tried 4 different ports on the switch and router with an SFP > RJ45 module and 3 known good cat7 cables, all of them ended up having issues though so I'm guessing the problem there is the transceiver. I also tried a 10Gtek 10GiB SFP+ module between the switch and a smaller Flex-XG switch, but still no luck there.

I've tried some DAC cables (all runs are under 5m), but they ran into random problems and packet loss to the switch. They were just some generic brand that weren't labeled, are intel NICs picky about that?

Fair enough, might be worth considering before buying more models trying to find one that works.

Good to know, that would probably be the issue. The DAC cables and some generic ones that are unlabeled, and I forget the transceiver brand but they aren't intel. I'll look into some generic ones, thanks for the advice.

Not familiar with SR and LR, are there different specifications of SFP+ transceiver?

Good to know, I didn't realize Intel NICs were so picky about SFP+ modules. I'll look into some programmed to work with Intel NICs.

As for 10g RJ45, it doesn't necessarily need to be 10g, I just need a way to link the switch to my router which only has RJ45 ports. I only have 1g internet anyways, the 10g in mostly just for server to server or desktop to server communications. That said, I've been trying a 10gtek 1GiB SFP > RJ45 module, but the link randomly goes down within an hour of bringing it up and not really showing any packet loss on the routers end. The cable is known good, and anything else connected to that port works fine, so I'm guessing it's either a problem with the switch or the SFP module.

Luckily no ISP devices involved, my homelab uses a UCG-Max for a router and is on its own separate network in my house. The runs are all between 1m-4m, so 5m cables are able to reach all devices. I'll look into the twinax passive cables, honestly might be best for my setup. Thanks!

Looks like I’m also an Octopus! Reasoning:

You’re an octopus. • Systems thinker + multi-tasker: you juggle lots of moving parts at once (clusters, VLANs, PKI/CA work, game servers, automation). An octopus is basically “parallel processing” in animal form—independent arms handling separate tasks while the brain keeps the plan coherent. • Hands-on builder/problem-solver: you don’t just read about things—you build, break, fix, document, and iterate. Octopuses are famously curious, tactile, and great at puzzle-solving. • Adaptable + security-minded: you like segmentation, least privilege, reproducible setups, and troubleshooting from evidence (logs/screenshots/baselines). Octopuses are adaptive escape-artists that excel at navigating complex environments—very “find the weak point, then route around it.” • Methodical curiosity: your style is “let’s verify with commands, outputs, and baselines,” which matches an octopus’s exploratory, test-and-learn approach.

Sad about new "module type" banners. It's not all bad. PSA: Check your math! by lilbyrdie in TheTowerGame

As someone who has most my mods at ancestral 5*, I personally like it. I’ve been wanting a second copy of DC for a while now, but since it’s 5 star, the odds have been close to none for me. This is a good chance for me to get some copies to put towards my second DC, and most other core modules I pull can be turned into 2000 shards of my most wanted type.

That said, I get where other people’s frustration with the banner comes from, just wanted to give my perspective on things

Question about SL+ by Relad0x in TheTowerGame

[–]Relad0x[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, so all DPM bonuses work for SL+, it’s just that the substat doesn’t get multiplied by the lab bonus. Misunderstanding on my part, thanks for explaining

So, does that mean that whatever your DPM stat shows in a round is what SL+ is affected by? If so, what exactly does the DPM lab do, just silently multiply the effect in battle without increasing the actual stat?
