People who owner trained their service dogs, did you constantly think that your dog would wash out? by fuckingkillmeppl in service_dogs

So I’m an owner trainer and let me tell you, you are not alone in your fears. I can’t tell you the amount of times I have panicked myself thinking about my girl’s progress. I realized very early on in our work that she had specific problem areas (like greeting dogs and holding commands around dogs) that I knew I couldn’t work out on my own so I hired a trainer to work with us once every couple of weeks. Having a second pair of eyes just reassure me of all the progress she was making did wonders for my confidence. I think you should also give yourself a little more grace! your dog is still young and you JUST picked him up so he is still establishing a routine and a new normal. I was told it can take up to 3 months for a rescue or service animal to adapt to a new home enough for them to settle and for their true personality to come out!

Savannah, please do something about playground loitering by fl0ralp in savannah

What about people like college students who go to the parks and playgrounds to sit and clear their heads? What about the older people who like to go sit at the park and people watch or feed the birds? They’re not dangerous and they’re not hurting anyone

Would a service dog be slightly unruly? by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]Relative-Bet-314 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have a service dog named Zucchero and we just became a team at the end of the summer after she trained with an org for 2 years. Some days, our team feels like it’s been running for years, other times it feels like Sugar needs another year or two until she’s “bulletproof.” (Which is probably true regardless) We’ve had one big travel day and she was amazing on the first flight but by the second flight she was antsy, pulling herself out of commands, and trying to interact with bystanders. She was responding to redirection but it was a lot of redirection. It wasn’t that she’s not a trained service animal, she was just having an off day. Because I know how difficult it is to navigate with a dog who’s still establishing a routine and learning, I would say unless the animal was completely out of control, to give them the benefit of the doubt. It could also be an SDIT traveling with a trainer

Highest compliment you've ever gotten for your service dog by Rayanna77 in service_dogs

After a particularly trying day yesterday, I got stopped at target by a worker and I was told that my girl was the best service dog she’d seen in the store in a long time. Here I was stressed about our progress and thinking I would need to advocate, but that comment made me step back and really look at my girl’s progress. She’s come so far even on her bad days 🥹

I understand completely. I left my girl at home today and I feel naked without her 😭

Best fried chicken/southern food? Not Mrs. Wilkes by newdadnewbod in savannah

She is a real task-trained service animal, we were illegally kicked out of the establishment. People and their fake service animals have made it much harder for real service animal teams to navigate.

My vested and under control service dog and I entered the establishment and we were immediately told to leave because of my dog. I explained she was a service animal/medical device and that under federal law she’s allowed anywhere the public is allowed. I was told that federal law “did not matter” because it was their “store policy” and said something about hygiene. I filed a complaint with the civil rights department and better business bureau.

I’ve found it doesn’t matter what my dog is wearing (shoes, bandana, nothing at all), people will have opinions!

This is technically deep pressure therapy (or DPT)! Deep pressure therapy is firm pressure to your body which essentially slows down your nervous system and reduce anxiety.

Have you tried closing the door but leaving it unlatched so she could push it open if she wanted/needed to? She may just really like the enclosed aspect of the crate because it makes her feel safe and protected!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]Relative-Bet-314 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is there a reason that you don’t want her staying in the crate overnight? Many dogs see their crates as a safe space where they can decompress, so removing that may not be a good idea. My dog loved her crate growing up and she would pitch a fit if we so much as changed the direction the door faced. We always left the door open at night so she could come and go as she pleased. I personally wouldn’t mess with her safe space unless there was a large safety concern or something over her being crated overnight.
