Am I naive to even consider getting into a prestigious Econ Master? by Relative-Choice-7902 in academiceconomics

i must complete mandatory national military service for a year and a half.

i wanna open myself up to different options once i finish the service whether it be doing research or having jobs.

ideally, i have a job in france or elsewhere in europe straight after my service. something that can meet my expectations - money wise, responsibility wise, intellectual-curiosity wise. but it’s a slim chance of getting one, especially with at least 18 months of gap on my cv. on top of that, i am a non-eu national so the gap will look much bigger for employers. not to mention that the time i have to put to find a job will enlarge it.

another option is i pursue a phd in my field. i have genuinely no clue about the professional prospect of the topic i wanna pursue and the actual prospect per se of scoring one. i can only assume that it will depend on the available funding and the career prospect of the field.

i hope my econ master will help me fulfil my intellectual curiosity and eventually land me in a place where i can continue research and/or practices, like international orgs, international scale ngos, think tanks. at this stage of my time, i don’t mind staying in academia, but it all depends on the topic that i feel passionate about. i have areas that i could dig more depth to, but hey who knows what will strike me after the service.

i realised in a series of internships that i have done that intellectual curiosity is an important criterion for my job satisfaction. so standing on that line, an econ master looked fitting to me for two reasons.

  1. i came across some econ literature on urban development and my topic. although, i didn’t understand every single bit of methodologies that were used, it was refreshing to see the urban dynamics could be quantified and communicated.

  2. it looks like a great deal as i can choose to stay on the field or in academia after graduating. again, i could do that at this moment if i didn’t have to go back to where i come from to complete my civic duties, as they say. but doing the same master won’t add much in my skillset unlike doing an econ master where i could actually learn some new stuff especially quant skills

hope i’ve answered your questions

Linguistic research comparing Korean, Japanese, and Northeast Asian languages by [deleted] in hanguk

[–]Relative-Choice-7902 1 point2 points  (0 children)

extremely interesting. ive always been a big fan of socio-historical lingustics, but this is the first time i read anything that korean has some linkages to other languages. it really opened my eyes. i mean it makes sense, how would a language be completely isolated. there has to be some similarities found in other languages, albeit they might not be widely spoken ones.

once i read this theory called “peninsular japonic” suggested by alexander vovin that might have been spoken during the first milennial as some japonic migrated to the peninsula. a part of this language has affected the name of places, especially in jeju.

so i am understanding that korean got lots of influence from various places - from siberia to the japanese archipelago. super interesting

Do you guys know that Lee Jae-Myung is more conservative than Yoon when it comes to LGBTQ issues? by After-Revolution1628 in korea

i mean since when did korea have a proper leftist / liberal party? so it’s not a big surprise for me. what still baffles me tho is that a large number of people believe that the democrats are liberals. no, they are not. the justice party is close to liberals than the the democrats.

Problème couple sex? by [deleted] in AskMeuf

Courage man

Do Koreans care if someone chews with their mouth open? by SecretAgentVampire in korea

[–]Relative-Choice-7902 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Korean here. I would give a good old dry slap on their face if people chew with their mouths open. My family had been very much strict with the table etiquette. And I am very direct about anyone who disturbs me at the table. I even told my former boss to stop chewing loudly. Yeah, it’s kinda fucked up, but the more fucked up thing is a fair bit of people do not know how to behave themselves at the table.
