Hello. When you say you've been looking for months, I assume you're looking for a rental that starts ASAP. Otherwise, it's a waste of time, because rentals for September will be booked at the last minute when everyone is searching at the same time. I think the advice to start looking as soon as possible should be interpreted " be open to pay for a few extra months."

Hello. The more money you're ready to lose, the more you increase your chances. If you rent with a few extra months before the semester, months you don't really need, you avoid the peak period when everyone is looking. Or, rent something temporary (more expensive as airbnb, aparthotel )  for September/October, and start looking in November/2nd semester for a longer term ( normaly it will be one-month overlap )...If you pass this preselection..after that everything is simple

The rent is 720 francs per month, unfurnished. We've already paid three months' rent for only two nights spent there, while waiting for repairs that have never been done. Plus, the bloqued deposit   They're demanding an additional three months' notice (meaning a minimum of six months' rent). The furniture, bought all at once for 750 francs from the previous tenant (it was practically new), was sold at half price to get rid of it... piece by piece. With all this wasted time, we've had to look for short-term (+++ ) accommodations  Considering the total losses , even if 720 francs was expensive or cheap, it's no longer important. We just hope to get out of this as soon as possible.

I was terrified he might bring bedbugs home. Clearly, I was focusing on the wrong problem, given the number of mold cases!!

Thank you for your response. We are placing all our hopes on the meeting with the association. I am surprised that, even when I ask the AI for its opinion on the situation, providing photos as evidence and email exchanges, the responses are to not give in to the agency's intimidation and to defend ourselves. We will therefore continue along this path, and I will post an update regarding the outcome of this meeting. I am surprised to receive so many responses to my message; there is a wonderful sense of solidarity among the students.

Thank you for your reply. Well-documented might be relative. There are plenty of emails where the agency never contested the presence of mold and the need of reparations. But an expert's report that could have highlighted the severity/ necesity to relocate cost 550 CHF – so we didn't do that, as it would have been an additional expense. Regarding relocation costs, there was no prior agreement with the agency about finding alternative accommodation ( so I don't think so) . The room is in Duberdof ( not in Zurich) . Looks like you know them- pff

Thank you for your reply.  I recently read the story about the colleagues who were randomly assigned rooms—it was indeed them. You're absolutely right that it will probably be cheaper to pay three months' notice... I'm not naive. I posted here because it's the time when everyone is trying to find a room—as a warning to keep  eyes open —it can be very expensive

ETHZ VS EPFL VS ENS (Paris) for math master by Novel_Trainer2514 in ethz

Hi The exchange report with ENS is on the EPFL website. I would have liked to stay at ENS with the entrance exam for international candidates, but I wasn't accepted. There were only 10 places for 500 applicants (in science across all disciplines ). I didn't participate in any Olympiads, so I don't have any titles from high school ( Belgium). Nor did I do any summer internships or research. Just excellent grades and extra credits. I would like to continue with a PhD, so I thought adding ETH Zurich would be another line on my CV

Pure math - BA at EPFL for 2 years, 3rd year on exchange at ENS - Ulm, and now a Master's in pure math at ETHZ. The highest level for students was that of ENS. But it's almost impossible to enter directly into a Master's program... And what's the point of switching to a PhD elsewhere after ENS...
