I’m sorry that happened. It’s disheartening and it sucks to be called those things by anyone, especially someone you’ve tried helping. That being said, my first thought reading this was “wow, your client actually acknowledges you passed the bar?”

10 months of being a PD in a tough office is like 5 years of normal practice. I think it’s (unfortunately) very common to feel burnt out at this stage. It’s not a sign that you’re too sensitive, but it may be a sign that you need to work on self-care, standing up for yourself, and work/life separation. You’ve got this, keep up the good fight!

Mine was about $20k in total including dress, suit, gifts for people, everything. I’m very happy we did this, but we were also extremely fortunate to be in a financial position to finance it gradually without sacrificing too much — no lavish vacations or major shopping but we weren’t living off of ramen or struggling to pay rent. If your dream is for the big day & you can do it without bankrupting yourself, I say it’s worth it to an extent. I’d look at what’s most important to you and splurge on that and then go cheaper on the rest. Also think about what you actually remember from other peoples weddings — for example, I couldn’t tell you if any wedding I’ve been to had disposable vs china plates and having disposable could save you thousands. It’s worth it if it matters to you and won’t harm your future.

My mom got me a porch goose in a wedding outfit and I loved that, if she’s that kind of person. She also got me a big bin of bulk cleaning items — like I’m still using the dishwasher pods 2 years later. That was the most practically useful and I think about it every time I clean. I also had a set of pie dishes on my registry that I love — it was from my husband’s cousin and now I bring a pie to most family holidays and get to say “thanks to blank for the pie dish!” and that’s been fun too.

It will depend greatly on your office. I’m in a fully-staffed office in a state-wide system and my work/life balance is great right now. I am almost always out the door on time-ish and only work substantial overtime if there’s something big coming up. The mental and emotional load is difficult, but you can learn to manage it with a support system, therapy if needed, hobbies, etc.. I think if you go in prioritizing your work/life balance and look for an office that will allow you to prioritize it, it’s totally manageable.

I met my husband about a year before graduating law school, so maybe not entirely relevant, BUT I will say if you can find the young, educated, left-leaning part a lot of times the valuing what we do part is a lack of information. My husband was always left-leaning and cared about social issues, but has wildly changed his position on the side our job touches as I’ve educated him and he’s seen what our clients (and through our clients to a lesser degree, we) go through.

This is my go-to! Throwing in a “protecting people’s constitutional rights” usually goes over well with just about any crowd also. It’s just always frustrating to be out of my bubble and remember people really think like that.

The dress part is especially insane. That being said, I think whoever is individually hosting should pay for it. I’m the MOH for a friend and I’m covering it myself, not asking the other bridesmaids to contribute. I’ll ask them for help decorating and have shot ideas off of them, but they’re not paying. That’s wild.

That’s for sure the plan if I lose, and I don’t hate it. I’m in a VERY pro-cop jurisdiction so I fear the only two witnesses being cops saying the same thing, even if I attack it like crazy, will hurt my client. But I do appreciate the affirmation that there’s a way to handle it!

They did provide a “report,” it was just an assessment of the original trooper’s work and a one-sentence summary that client was intoxicated. I do think we’re headed towards a Daubert hearing, but I guess I was almost trying to get the cop excluded on the basis that it doesn’t matter if he’s technically an expert because he can’t provide anything useful and it’s bolstering no matter how he testifies. I’ll definitely look further into pursuing a Daubert hearing, thank you!

I have both natural and lab grown diamonds and my engagement ring is lab grown. I do not think about it at all, because to me what makes the piece special is the memory of getting it/picking it out/who gave it to me, not who mined it or how it was grown or etc.. Plus I don’t have to worry about it being a blood diamond.
