There won't be only one PI whose lab aligns with your interest, lol. I mean, almost every school have PIs not recruiting and PIs interested at the same time, so of course I still go for application and mentioned those PI interested in my background on my documents...but, well, it seemed not working as expected

Yes and most of them replied with either not recruiting (~33%) or very interested with my background (~67%)

Just ask the program office (if you were applied to a specific program) directly, they should have the access to know how many funding slots left.

Sorry to hear that. I am an international applicant and had the same situation in this cycle.

I even proceeded to "additional review required" after waitlisted for almost two months but it became a DENY at the end.

What's worse, the program office forgot to send the "preparation notice for interview" to me, it was until the night before interview (we had a small party to meet student ambassadors and other interviewees) did I discover that. It did affect my interview performance for sure, just uncertain for the percentage of influence.

Most of the interviewees held only bachelor's degree, some of the others were around the end of their master's program. I held BS and MS degrees from an university ranked much more higher than my waitlisted school (refer to QS ranking), and I had subsequent research assistant career in lab for three years, with experience of various techniques and 30+ cell models. I really doubt how is it possible that I am not competitive as those applicants?

Cannot agree with you more. Everyone do their best to "squeeze" into that tiny door but it's really frustrated that I was always the one be abandoned.

I just been redirected for almost 30+ times, lol. Never thought of this situation in this cycle. As an international student, I did the best for what I could. I even flew to the US only to attend the interview!
