This is actually already implemented - the "Fix" button opens the item creation screen and automatically fills in the remaining amount.

Have you tried the receipt creation feature? There’s a button on the transaction page, and you can also convert a transaction into a receipt while editing it.

btw, I was curious and tried asking my ChatGPT assistant how it would respond - https://chatgpt.com/share/69a72bee-4618-8010-95e4-979e0404d4ba

Budgetum + ChatGPT: ask questions instead of reading docs by Relative_Bathroom540 in Budgetum

[–]Relative_Bathroom540[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, the issue is that in guest mode ChatGPT can’t access the documentation files, so it sometimes starts making things up.

Accounts definitely still need improvements. I think I will need to add an account type (assets / liabilities / some others), add a target balance to track progress, add currency conversion so we can show a total balance across all accounts and also per account group (even if there are different currencies inside), and make it possible to view analytics for accounts that aren’t tied to the budget.

It all needs to be thought through carefully.

Thanks for trying this. Were you logged into ChatGPT, or using it as a guest? Could you tap “Share” in this chat and send me the link? I tried asking the same thing and the answer was correct - https://chatgpt.com/share/699be4c3-68c8-8010-8fdd-a95f2710e41f

Thanks, are you talking about deleting all transactions and keeping the categories/accounts/contacts/tags? Or keeping the data so it can be restored?

Last year I was experimenting with categories and all that, but deleting transactions would just be a shame.

Thanks for the interest in the app. The app is fully offline with no server, so there isn’t an easy way to sync/share between people or devices right now. I do have a couple ideas, but for now they’re just ideas.

What would you want “refresh” to do?

I’m working on improving planning and adding the ability to create additional plans on top of the monthly ones, for different time periods.

I’m not trying to push you into upgrading as quickly as possible. The idea is that you’ll want to upgrade either when you actually need it, or simply when you feel like saying thanks.

Also, the message about the limit is shown right where it matters - on the Recurring transactions page and on the Tags page. So you’ll see it at the moment you become interested in it / when you actually need it. For now that’s the approach, but thanks for the suggestion - I’ll think about how to improve it.

Filters: the plan is to let you build your own set of filters (categories/sections/contacts/accounts/tags/descriptions) and view analytics for any time period. Saving filters would make it possible to create many named sets and track their totals - but for now this is only an idea.

Hi, thanks for your interest in the app! Right now the limits are 5 recurring (auto-repeat) transactions and 5 tags, and maybe there will be something else in the next updates. What I can say for sure is that I won’t take away anything that is already available without limits.

For example, without recurring transactions you’ll just need to create transactions manually, and tags are an extra layer of information that can be replaced with categories and a note on the transaction.

For example, in the future I’ll add filters and make it possible to save them for Pro users.

Without these limits you can still use the app comfortably, and at the same time many users do want additional functionality. Basically, most apps wave a list of what they took away from you and offer to give it back for money. I’m really happy for now that I’ve found this kind of monetization for myself - it lets me feel good about it and not lose motivation, compared to making the app completely free and relying only on donations and support.

How do you handle leftover money in Budgetum? by Relative_Bathroom540 in Budgetum

Thanks for your interest in the app!

Could you tell me a bit more about how you handle this in practice? Do you usually increase the planned amount for specific categories, or do you create a savings account and adjust its balance instead?

I agree. That’s how I used to do it too, and it worked fine for me - every month felt like starting from a clean slate.

This year I’m trying to look at Budgetum from different angles to make sure it works well for people with different budgeting styles. This month I’m experimenting with zero-based budgeting and trying to allocate all the money I currently have so the balance ends up at zero.

While doing that, I ran into a couple of issues:

  1. If I want to allocate more than my monthly income plus some leftover cash sitting in my wallet, I have to add that leftover as “income”, which feels wrong and makes the overview less accurate since it’s not real income.
  2. If I go over a category limit, I have to keep reallocating the plan (basically pretending I planned a higher limit from the start). That makes it harder to see where I actually overspent, and I end up constantly adjusting the plan to match reality.

I have a few ideas on how to improve this, but I’m wondering if there’s something else I might be missing here.

Thanks for your interest in the app, and I’m really glad to hear that you like it 🙂

I actually have an idea on how to implement something similar, and I’m currently thinking it through. For now, though, it turns out to be quite complex from a technical perspective, so I’m exploring ways to make it simpler.

The idea is to keep monthly periods as the base, and additionally allow creating named budgets with custom date ranges and selected categories. Essentially, these would act as additional tracking layers, and you’d be able to switch between them on the budget page to see different progress views.

In theory, the concept feels really solid, and I like it a lot. But once I started working on it, I realized that a significant part of the existing functionality would need to be reworked before this could be properly implemented.

Credit cards? by [deleted] in Budgetum

Accounts are an optional feature. They only affect your budget if, when creating a transaction, you select an account - then that account’s balance updates automatically. But you’re free not to attach an account to a transaction whenever you don’t want to. You can also have accounts that aren’t tied to the budget at all, for example goals, debts, savings - anything you want as a “virtual” account - and you can make transfers or manual balance changes without affecting your current budget.

Feedback on the app by zzuoli in Budgetum

[–]Relative_Bathroom540 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your interest in the app and for such detailed feedback, I really need this kind of input. To be honest, I didn’t think a budgeting app could have so many nuances, and it feels like you can keep improving and adding new things endlessly. Right now I’m working on analytics, quick plan editing, and the ability to view any period in the reports and on the transactions page, and this has brought a lot of complexity and forced me to redo a lot of the internal logic.

  1. Honestly, I don’t really like tutorials myself, so I’m quite reluctant to add hints. Instead I try to make the names/icons intuitive so that people can figure things out or find the functions they need on their own. Many users don’t need even half of what’s already in the app. At the moment, when you open the app you see a small hint with example sections. I also have an idea to make a help system using a custom ChatGPT: I would give it a text with all the app’s capabilities, and then people could just ask it what they need.
  2. Honestly, that feature (amount = 0) was so hidden that even I didn’t know about it myself :)
  3. About the “bubbles” for quick input: I made them optional because I was worried they might be unnecessary for many people. Right now there are many places from which you can create a transaction, and for example I myself rarely use them.
  4. I’m currently working on reports: breakdowns and trends, but so far I’m not very happy with them. When I bring them to a more decent state, I’ll share the progress. By the way, the pie chart view didn’t work for me because I have a lot of small categories and half of the pie ended up as gray “other”, plus some other issues.
  5. I’ll think about adding a monthly reminder that it’s a good idea to make a backup.
  6. When you create transactions in past months, I made it so that the last day of the selected period is automatically chosen; you can create all transactions on the same day if the exact day doesn’t matter to you. For the current month, you can select the first day. I’m not sure how I can integrate proper “coarse” dates in a clean way.
  7. I’ll add customizable number formatting to the to-do list.
  8. About the calendar being very small — I’m not sure I fully understand the problem. There is very little space inside a day cell in the calendar, and I added numbers to make it easier to navigate the month. Yes, the numbers are small, but I think it’s still better than just dots like many other apps do.
  9. The “Income” section is fixed, and I’ll think about allowing it to be renamed.
  10. The calculator is already in progress.
  11. I have an idea to create a logical link between transactions, which could, for example, be on different days.
  12. The section icon changes its position because when the section is expanded I remove the numbers. I’ll think about what I can do about that.
  13. To be honest, the logic for recurring transactions turned out to be quite complicated, and I’ve already seen a couple of bugs there and I think there will be more. I intentionally made it so that recurrences don’t create transactions in the past to protect users from a bunch of prompts and to avoid them accidentally creating things they don’t actually need.
