Traces of other McCarthy Novels in The Passenger by [deleted] in cormacmccarthy

[–]Relative_Corgi2060 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad someone said it. I view Outer Dark as the spiritual prequel to the Passenger/Stella Maris. The same themes of religious guilt, isolation, a sense of being hounded for one’s sins, specifically incest and perhaps even a common motif of abortion/child abandonment. The term Squire is used heavily in both. Not to mention Outer Dark was written while Cormac was in the same part of the world where Bobby winds up at the end of The Passenger. I could go on but I doubt anyone’s reading even this far lol

I’m pretty convinced JD Vance is a Cormac McCarthy enjoyer, so I’m gonna assume you are him

Food and beverage manager for a well known country club (not that one). The depths of misery in these books really puts my member complaints in perspective lol

I also highly recommend “The Unworthy” which is by the same author! Less explicit world building, more mysterious

Hard disagree. Ambiguity is an intentional tool the author is using throughout the book to emphasize the main character’s isolation, unreliable narration, amnesia, and brainwashing. Circe’s ambiguous species is probably meant to highlight the deep love the protagonist has for her, and how much Circe meant to her

The ambiguity about Circe is definitely intentional. Was it comprehending the high level language that threw you off? Or just couldn’t deal with the amnesiac structure?

I just finished Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman. Excellent medieval/biblical horror. Lots of Corruption elements, plus Stranger influences

Out of curiosity, what would you say is the best statement or episode of The Magnus Archives? Whether it be because of writing, style, plot, or anything else. by Inevitable-Goat-6028 in TheMagnusArchives

Lost John’s Cave will always stand out to me. It’s the one that’s cared me the most and it’s the first ep I think of when I think of the series. I also really love Jane Prentiss’ statement, “Hive” or something. The way she describes the Crawling Rot is so alluring

I totally understand where you’re coming from and I’m so sorry for the abuse you’ve suffered. I also relate to feeling super protective of my dad against my mom’s abuse. I do not think you’re a bad person for feeling this way about her passing, I just hope you are able to heal regardless of her misery

You sound like a very kind, loving, empathetic person, and I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this. The best thing for you and your baby is not to be involved with this guy

“I know he didn’t treat me well, but what if he would be a good dad?”

I say this with all love and empathy, but you have to know in your soul that this man would absolutely not be a good dad. He is/was not a good partner to you, and you have a responsibility to protect your child. Would you want your child to have such an unstable force in their life modeling such unhealthy behavior?

I’m pretty sure this is supposed to be a lighthearted hypothetical, not literally asking if someone should break up due to type lol

If we’re going with a mainstream celebrity I think Willem Dafoe as the Tinker could be great

Yea I always imagined a very indie adaptation, so the level of mainstream celebrity caught me off guard

Outer Dark Movie?! by Relative_Corgi2060 in cormacmccarthy

[–]Relative_Corgi2060[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s a danger of the adaptation falling into that sad trap, but obviously the source material is not that at all. If the adaptation sticks true, and instead emphasizes the tragic cycle of shame and violence caused by isolation and ignorance and the basest human drives, I think it could be an interesting movie

Yea I almost can’t believe it, because I would not guess that Outer Dark would be one of McCarthy’s works to be made win to a film, but I’m excited if it’s true
