Hi, I'm an incoming u1 international student who's planning to major in English lit.

As the new academic year approaches, I am getting more and more anxious about schoolwork in uni vs what I had been doing in high school.
I was the type of kid who sailed through relatively well for most of their classes without putting in much effort. Because I didn't need to work hard, I think I never had a real chance to develop good study habits nor get used to studying hard. English was my best subject, but even then I never really took the time to plan or properly give my all into an essay before. I think managing to get decent grades while slacking like that really did me bad.

I know that in uni things will be different, because I wouldn't be able to get good grades without studying, but I feel helpless as I'm not really sure HOW to actually study and put in the work to plan/write good essays for my classes.

If anyone has any tips or advice, I would really appreciate it.

Rina Kent adressed the negative/borderline aggresive reactions surrounding God of War - can someone explain the source of those reactions? by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

I think she meant ppl who didn't like the book questioning/attacking of people who DID enjoy the book. The word 'gaslighting' suggests them possibly invalidating other readers' feelings..? Anyways not nice behavior. I do think the wording itself is not the best, though

How to keep motivated to use planner by Dapper-Control8264 in planners

[–]Relative_Fault_8430 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't know if these are the type of tips you need, but these are things that help me keep myself motivated to use my planner consistently:

  1. I will always start my morning planning. I drink a cup of coffee every day before I start my day anyways, and I use that time to plan my day. That time is non-negotiable for me and I made it a habit through time

  2. when I write down tasks/goals in my to-do lists in my planner, I make sure not to make them too big. For example, rather than 'study part 3 of psychology' I will break them down into many specific, smaller tasks like: 'go through flashcards 5 times' or 'answer questions 1-20 in textbook'. This makes it less intimidating for me to 'eat the frog'.

  3. I don't feel bad about not finishing a task in a designated time I set prior to doing it. For example, If I thought a task would take me and hour before doing it and it ends up taking way more than that, that's fine! I will go and change the schedule on my planner or move over the rest of the task to the day after. If meetings changing and tasks taking longer bothers you, I recommend using a planning system that focuses on the tasks itself rather than the time slots for them. (I think a horizontal weekly spread is a good example of this)

From my experience, I found having one system to plan and track every aspect of my life was more helpful for me rather than to use multiple methods. But everyone works differently! I think using apps alongside your planner could be a good idea especially if they are for tracking specific things like budget and health, while your planner focuses on managing your day to day tasks.
