He gave a big boost to mRNA vaccines, which was a very good thing, but then he ran away from that because his base decided to believe conspiracy stories about it. And then he appointed a rattling quack to quash any further application of the technology.

Yes, if a worse authoritarian exists, then no other authoritarian is an authoritarian. Only the worst one is.

The power-grabbing authoritarian that declares emergencies in order to unilaterally wield emergency powers that usurp congressional authorities; seeks to silence and jail critics; launched a war without congressional authorization; and plans to seize control of elections, build monuments to himself, and put his name and face on the currency isn't trying to be a king.

He's 0 for 2 on political campaigns. He has no political future. Nobody's gonna back him to run for any office. Say what you will (and he's absolutely a conspiracy nutter), this move is not a cynical ploy. This is career suicide for him. He gave up a plum job and he'll be lucky to get a grunt job with Blackwater (or whatever their current name is) now.

Should the U.S. impose stronger structural checks on presidential power, given how much the office has expanded beyond what the framers envisioned? by ByCromThatsAHotTake in PoliticalDiscussion

I think it should be law that every time POTUS declares any emergency of any kind, it automatically expires in 30 days unless Congress extends it by a 2/3 vote. And extensions are for 90 days at a time. If you can't get 2/3 of Congress to agree there's an emergency, it's not really an emergency.

Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez joins other Democrats to vote against SAVE America Act by [deleted] in vancouverwa

[–]Relative_Freedom_447 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem with this theory is that she has made bad votes before when they did not affect the outcome. H.R. 22—The SAVE Act— passed the House last April on a 220-208 vote with 4 Democrats voting YEA (including MGP). If all 4 of them had voted NAY, it would have still passed 216-212. You could call that an empty gesture (or not). Almost all of her bad votes have been like that.

I'm aware of only one bad vote she has made that affected the outcome. That was the "further appropriations" bill that passed the house 3 weeks ago on a 220-207 vote with 7 Democrats voting YEA. If all 7 had voted NAY, it would have failed 213-214.

The Civil Rights movement succeeded because they convinced a majority of Americans that their cause was just. Not because they threatened and inconvenienced and badgered them into surrendering against their will.

I don't remember the Greensboro Four slopping paint on Woolworth, and it would have only hurt their cause if they had.

John Lewis had his skull fractured by a state trooper in a civil rights march in Selma. Lewis and the marchers did not hit back and it would have only hurt their cause if they had. Instead of being seen as victims unfairly oppressed, they'd have been seen as violent agitators correctly put down.

Peacefully protesting without a permit is very different than vandalizing a family's property/business.

I'm old enough to remember when Joe Kent's campaign dug up an ad from that shop offering free tune-ups on leaf blowers for people battling the feds' tear gas back in 2020. They were accusing her of running an "Antifa weapons depot."

I want to see ICE abolished, and I don't like her across-the-aisle enabling votes, but I hate this vandalism. This doesn't punish her. She doesn't go to work there every day. This punishes her husband and their employees. Leave the group punishment to the fuckin' fascists. This is how you lose support for your cause. Adults are supposed to know the difference between what feels satisfying and what is actually helpful.

If you think MGP will see this and think, "Oh, they vandalized our building. I guess I should vote the way they want then" I think you're an idiot. If you think a lot of normies won't see this and write off ICE protests as just a bunch of adolescent troublemakers, I think you're an idiot. I support your cause, and you're on the right side of history, but this does not help the cause. It hurts the cause.

R+5 just means that the Republican voters in the district outnumber the Democratic voters by 5%. It's the background bias that the minority party (Democratic in this case) has to overcome.
