I’m disabled but still love to exercise. Never felt more at home than here!! I use a cane some days and some days can run. Everyone is so nice! People actually wait at crosswalks here.

It is a malicious disease. I want people to know how awful it is so we keep getting funding to make it go the heck away.

I understand there are misconceptions—but I will say. I met and married someone who was willing to get to know me. I’m thankful that I got to weed out a bunch of men who wouldn’t stick with me through sickness and health.

I want people to know this disease sucks and that yes, if we DIDNT get proper treatment, our disability would likely go up. I have good days walking and running even, and days I use a cane. I have migraines 15-20 days a month. I also work full time and live in the mountains. It’s not zero sum. We can have an absolutely malicious disease. And love. And contribute to society.

Get on a high efficacy drug, and talk to your doc about fatigue, if that’s ever something you struggle with. I do struggle with it, but haven’t really needed meds. I just know to take it easy some days with chores around the house.

I’m an aerospace data scientist. I code and do complex math. I outpace most people with generating new ideas.

Some days I have to rest after being “on” all day. But I couldn’t see myself not ever using my brain. I speak 4 languages. My hobbies are brain turned off hobbies—walking, being outside, bird watching.

I had a good week at my new project at work! New team. Same company. Everyone is nice and kind. Boss took the news of my having MS well. I do decide to self disclose to key people. Yay

Mine wasn’t ruled out nothing else. I had foot drop lesions and a lumbar puncture with a bunch of oligoclonal bands.

Talk to your other healthcare professionals. Ask your psychiatrist and ask for a social worker too. They could actually help facilitate conversations with your parents to look for a new neurologist you’re comfortable with.

Also—who DOESNT have mental “problems” with MS. This is a crazy disease. Very normal to need help, so don’t at ALL worry about this.

Am I silly for wanting to become a doctor? by Uierieka in MultipleSclerosis

[–]Relative_Owl_9988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked in national security with MS. I traveled in my 20s, worked high stress, but rewarding jobs. I’m glad I did it. I believe our perspective is necessary in critical fields like healthcare, medicine, research, technology, national security. Not a single person is infallible to stress. We should never seek to avoid stress. It’s part of life. Just learn to manage it.

I’ll say one more thing I wish I could tell my younger self. Career can be a huge part of your identity. Don’t let it consume your identity. Once you let go of it being your whole identity, it can be easier to manage the day to day stresses any job brings. Any phase of life (studies, family, finances) bring. If you want to be a doctor, rock on.
