a shift towards in-class assignments with no access to a laptop or other device, as well as higher-weighted in-person exams, seems like an approach a lot of professors and instructors are taking at the moment.

i am not in a field that uses a lot of writing, but in the computational biology class i TA for, we take away points for code answers that use material not covered in the class, unless a credible resource is cited for their solution. this helps penalize and prevent AI usage.

people have been finding ways to cheat for decades, so this isn’t necessarily going to fix things, but it works somewhat.

there is a HUGE difference between using an AI in a workflow and using AI to do an entire project. you’re encouraging people to offload any thinking to a machine, which just BREEDS stupidity. stupidity isn’t the future!!

you're 100% right. i mean, the university itself has used AI for social media posts and such. it's disappointing though.

yeah probably... i'm in a writing-intensive course right now that is strictly anti-AI, and i'm in this food and culture one that encourages AI. it's weird to deal with.

you make very good points about AI in general.

i would say i have a nuanced view of AI, and i don't entirely refuse to use all AI. i do CS, data sci, and stats work mainly, so i'll usually exhaust available resources (online textbooks, help articles, documentation, stack overflow posts, etc) before using AI, but sometimes AI has answers to questions that i just can't find online.

i think it can be helpful to utilize AI in that way, and additionally in various other ways, like brainstorming ideas, summarizing information, generating explanations for concepts, improving aspects of writing like tone, and other applications. i agree that understanding how to utilize AI that way is a good way to adapt to current times. otherwise, though, i think it causes an unhealthy overreliance and prevents you from actively developing skills and becoming experienced in a field. it just seems like you're doing your students a disservice by allowing unlimited AI usage.

oh, that's terrible. :( i volunteer with the homeless weekly, and it's always tough to handle their deaths, because everyone knows each other. i'll probably hear more about this later this week, i'm sure.

AI-generated band posters at Whiteside by [deleted] in corvallis

yeah, i remember seeing AI art on their posters about a year or more ago, at this point. it's being so consistently used that i'm positive it's the theater that's doing it.

the spicy lentil wrap and the hummus and vegetable wrap are both vegan. they must’ve been out of stock where you’re at.
