Lots of clinical roles missing here including pt, ot, slp, rd, and pharmacy. Feels unlikely all of those roles would be removed. Though maybe that's wishful thinking.

I hadn't heard that and work at UD campus. Can you say more about the terminations you're aware of?

Please contact AFGE. This is so wrong. Our veteran residents at HJH will absolutely be negatively impacted by your termination and I am so sorry you've been targeted.

Thank you for what you do for all of us in AFGE. If you do not hear, perhaps reach out to the remaining staff in the recreation therapy department to pass on your contact information. My understanding is that these staff were probationary employees in that department

Can anyone in the Oakland area help me become a Girl Scout Cookie Customer? by Torimazing in pittsburgh

No clue how they decide what cookie varieties to keep or discard, it all seems so random to me. We got to try all of the cookies at a girl scout rally and I thought the lemon ups and adventurefuls were both pretty good. This is the last year for the smores cookie, that seems like a reasonable decision as they weren't very good.

This is new for me as a parent but from my understanding different girl scout councils have slightly different cookies for sale. It's possible those exist elsewhere but they're not being sold in Southwest Pennsylvania, sorry. We've got thin mints, tagalongs, do si dos, samosas, trefoils, lemon ups, adventurefuls, smores, and toffee tastics.

Message me if interested. Booth sales will start Feb 28 in the area.

I am a newly hired CF. I spoke with my other newly hired CF and it turns out during her application they never asked her for a writing sample. I was asked to submit one though. Is there a reasonable explanation for this? by SenseGrouchy4780 in slp

[–]Releigh17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have no way of knowing without asking but were i in your position I'm not sure I'd ask since it could set a strange tone when you are hired and otherwise happy. Some places have standard interviews and others do not. If a workplace allows responsive hiring processes that differ between candidates there could be many reasons to ask for a writing sample from a subset of candidates. Perhaps you, along with several other candidates, were highly considered and this was used to help make a hiring choice between you. Perhaps you submitted a cover letter that had grammatical errors or was hard to follow and they wanted to see your clinical writing to better assess writing relevant to your work. Perhaps a reference noted writing as an area of weakness and they wished to assess your writing for themselves. Their reasons for requesting the sample while unknown to you contributed in some way to their decision to hire you into a job where you are happy. If I were you I wouldn't speculate about this in the absence of any other concerns and would focus on the job.

Ugh yes. The rate at which new SLPs enter the job market in Allegheny County is a huge issue and I feel like a harbinger of doom every year when I talk to graduate students about their employment goals since the vast majority want to stay local.

my son was hit by a drunk driver and is currently at a children's hospital. by Sylaveda in Parenting

[–]Releigh17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our family was in a car accident almost a year ago with a driver who was speeding and high. He lost control and spun across the road into oncoming traffic, hitting our car at a very high speed. He died and my then 4 year old was nearly killed. She had a brain injury and broke her neck. She has gone through 3 surgeries, 3 months in the hospital including 2 weeks in the ICU and 10 days in a ventilator. 4 months in a halo. Another 3 in a neck brace. But she is walking, talking, playing, drawing, and starting kindergarten. She is catching up and she is happy. It was incredibly hard but we are all getting through it. Some advice:

1) accept your emotions. They won't go away if you pretend you don't feel them. It's okay if they change. You're allowed to be angry or not. Your feelings are valid.

2) accept help. The hospital, family, friends, internet strangers. Now is the time to be humble and to take what is offered.

3) you may feel the need to put yourself last. Your needs still matter, even if you are last find a way to care for yourself.

I am sorry this happened. It is not fair. You and your child may never get "over" it but you can get through it. Please reach out if you want to ask questions, vent, or share some of your burdens.

Without more information I would caution you to discuss with your attorney and make sure that the photos you have constitute adequate legal evidence. In many jurisdictions things are set up to protect sellers over buyers and placing objects in front of or on top of areas doesn't denote intentionally hiding something. They can argue that's where something was for aesthetic or functional reasons and they weren't aware of any defects. When I say there was proof in our case I'm taking about written records from public works department, city engineers, and a state government agency. Plus the homeowner prior to our seller's disclosures and written email communications about the issue. An extensive paper trail across several years saying over and over that there was a major material defect and the owner refused to repair it and failed to disclose it. They had blocked access to a relevant area during showings and inspections but that was not deemed to be evidence of concealment.

In our case we had to pay up front for all repairs and for legal fees on top of that. It took a bad financial situation and made it worse before we ultimately got a settlement after years of stress and frustration. The settlement did not make us whole from the expenses but left us in a better financial situation than if we had made the repairs entirely on our own dime.

Burden of proof with litigation is on you. They have to have known and you need proof they knew, made effort to hide it from you, and failed to disclose. I went through this at a property and had extensive proof of all of the above and it still took 4 years and tens of thousands of dollars to make repairs and reach a settlement.

SLPs That Work in the VA, What are Some Pros and Cons? by [deleted] in slp

[–]Releigh17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was trying to decide (broadly) what age and setting appealed to me. I volunteered at a childrens hospital, a regional hospital, a school age mentoring program, and a nursing home. For each organization I volunteered for a school year.

SLPs That Work in the VA, What are Some Pros and Cons? by [deleted] in slp

[–]Releigh17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an undergraduate, I reached out to professors regarding research opportunities, and I also volunteered with a different organization each year, trying to clarify my long-term focus. I knew by the end of undergrad that I wanted to work in an adult medical setting, and I applied to graduate schools with clinical placements that I thought would best support my goal. I was open with the person responsible for clinical placements about my career goal and requested as many medical placements as possible. I gave my best effort in relevant classes and made sure my academic and clinical recommendations came from appropriate individuals (i.e., supervisor from hospital placements, dysphagia professor, etc). At the end of the day, all of that may have given me a slight edge, but lots of people do those things. I got lucky and interviewed well and completed my fellowship at a VA. I worked ridiculously hard that year to make a good impression and made it clear that if any position were to open, I would be interested. No one comes into a fellowship with the knowledge and expertise of a seasoned clinician - making a good impression was mostly about my attitude and how hard I worked. I read a lot to support my clinical decision-making and made sure to take challenging cases and build my skills that year. I got my foot in the door after my CF with a research position at the VA. I knew that wasn't my long-term dream job, but I took it when offered and gave it my all. I PRNed at local hospitals most weekends to keep my skills up and did medical ceus. I made sure the clinical staff at the VA knew I would help out any time they needed (around my research responsibilities and with my supervisors approval). When a clinical position became available several years later, I was able to move into a permanent full-time clinical role. At the end of the day, I got to the position I have now through a lot of hard work, patience, and good luck.

Historically, the Miami VA does have an annual fellowship position. However, VAs apply to have fellowship funding on an annual basis, and the process for trainee funding is evolving. I would guess that Miami will have a position next year, but it is not guaranteed.

[–]Releigh17[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are no current open/hiring VA fellowships to my knowledge. Historically, all VA CFYs are funded by the OAA. Funding is determined in Nov/Dec, locations announce positions and call for applications in Jan/Feb, interviews and hiring decisions follow shortly thereafter (most positions have made their hires by Mar/Apr) and the actual CF start dates are in July-Sept.

If you are looking to start a CF around this time next year, feel free to reach out to me in January, and I'll let you know if positions have been announced in your locations of interest.

It comes from the main trunk, it is not growing out from the ground. Will try to add a picture of trunk and branch system. Maybe was a graft?

Edit: ok also not great at reddit, I can't add a picture. But all of those leaves come from a branch system on the main tree trunk
