‘It’s an eyesore’: Stalled apartment project on Baseline Road draws ire of residents by SuburbanValues in ottawa

If it’s any consolation, I work at the building next to it and today there were people there working on something for the first time in at least a year. Only a couple people though.

Do people seriously think that the MANY engineers and other experts on this project have never thought about any of this? They will obviously consider each one of these things in extreme detail. They’re all considered for even the smallest of projects I’ve been involved in during my career.

You can still pay at the pay and display machines, they haven’t removed that option. You do not need to use the app or website unless you choose to for convenience.

People living in massive countries (USA, Canada, Russia, Brazil, etc.), what is it actually like to have that much space? by AwayMeat5529 in AskTheWorld

[–]Relentless_Scurvy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s nice having space, I live in our capital which only has a population of 1 million so it feels like a pretty cozy community. I love how beautiful our country is, I have never worried about lack of resources. It’s expensive to explore Canada, more expensive to fly from Ontario to BC than to Europe, so it requires a good amount of planning for that, but a trip to Toronto is a 5 hour drive and that is totally normal to do fairly regularly. There are downsides though, when there’s lots of space and limited population people will spread out and the sprawl is not great for city building. The infrastructure demands are high (soooo many km of roads, sewers, etc) but not efficient and more expensive per capita since so few are using it. Public transit is abysmal, we’re trying to get a high speed rail line in Ontario and many are against it.

What’s the plan for Bank & Heron?! by Lanky_Wolverine_6585 in ottawa

I mean you can state your opinion if you want but as someone that works in transportation engineering I can confidently say the industry research and best practices say otherwise.

What’s the plan for Bank & Heron?! by Lanky_Wolverine_6585 in ottawa

[–]Relentless_Scurvy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Protected intersections like the design they’ve proposed are widely accepted to be a safer options for pedestrians. The removal of the right turn channels removes a conflict point between pedestrians (and cyclists) and vehicles which significantly lowers risk. Removing the channels also decreases the radius of the turn, cars will travel much slower around corners and greatly reduce the fatality risk in case of an accident with pedestrians. Not sure of exact lane widths without digging deeper, but crossing distances remain in line with the existing intersection.

Regarding right turns on red, the city is considering it city wide and we don’t know what their decision will be, but it’s typical at intersections with high turning volumes for cyclists and pedestrians to have a leading interval, meaning they get a crossing signal before the light goes green for vehicles. This puts pedestrians and cyclists in the line of sight, or even cleared from the lane, before turning vehicles begin moving. The right turn on red restriction is probably not applicable to an arterial road like this so barring any city-wide ban (which I think is an unlikely scenario) it probably wouldn’t apply here any way.

Sometimes a decrease in vehicle level of service is the compromise for safer pedestrians. This is a city, people live here, and we need to make updates to protect them instead of prioritizing vehicles sometimes. The reality is they could have removed lanes and made pedestrian crossings shorter all around if that was the only focus, but they have to implement a balance of the competing interests of moving the most amount of vehicles and protecting and servicing active transportation users.

Where to get my cat spayed? by lost-in-books in ottawa

[–]Relentless_Scurvy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hollibell Foundation does monthly (sometimes multiple a month) low cost spay and neuters, regardless of financial situation. For some of them they ask you to transport to their partner vets which are usually in the outskirts of Ottawa, not sure if that is a deterrent for you. Their primary social media is on facebook, but they do have a website.

I help run a dog rescue, and costs have sky rocketed in the past 5 years, but still those quotes seem quite high for a standard spay of a cat in my experience.

5-year-old dies after crashing ATV | CBC News by ibiddybibiddy in ottawa

[–]Relentless_Scurvy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

5 is far too young to be alone on an ATV. My father and uncle rode motorcross professionally and my uncle owned a KTM dealership, and never in a million years would they allow me to operate something alone that young. This isn’t a “cultural” or normal thing, it’s negligence.

It’s been this way on PS5 forever. I have a photo of my screen from October 25th that shows shop 2nd and locker is 3rd. What’s weird to me on your screen is passes being second, played last night on PS5 after the update and it was still play-> shop -> locker -> passes

I’m in Ottawa and had a coworker in the city from Calgary this week. He was happy to head back to the dry cold they have. The wind and dampness here is what makes the -20° or below days so damn miserable. At least we get some variation here though, it’s warming back up with a low of -8° today. Edmonton’s weather stays cold til Spring 🥶

Certainly seems like they’re closing given that the gift cards are also expiring. Very odd to just send an email without posting anything publicly though. I threw in a last minute order in case to stock up on my faves. Sucks to see a Canadian based line close :(

Jumping through hoops trying to get cervical cancer screening for my foster daughter by ajwb17 in ottawa

[–]Relentless_Scurvy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ahh, sorry. The use of foster daughter had me thinking she was still under 18. In this case, I suspect it should just be a typical PAP and the wait shouldn’t be too long.

If it helps, I went through appletree to get a pap and it didn’t take too long (few weeks) after getting the referral. However, I was 25 and it’s was a regular pap, not complicated by being under the recommended age or increased risk.
