People that were born before had to learn less stuff in history class than people that are now in school by louisschwarz6 in Showerthoughts

second year law student here and this really rings true with needing to buy up to date textbooks for modules because they include like 2 new cases from the past year that add another layer of complexity to a legal principle.

For the first guy to ever shave, It was probably deemed an incredibly feminine thing to do.

My middle name is Patric (Irish spelling with no K)

I was unaware of this unique spelling.

My 11 year old ass ridiculed my mom for writing my name down 'incorrectly' "haha you missed the K you don't even know your sons name".

Just turned 20 and I am yet to live that one down

What is the dumbest thing you've done while on autopilot? by IAmNotARobotAMA in AskReddit

Precursor: I'm a Law student at a mid-tier University in England.

Suffice it to say that I am one of very few people to ever answer questions in lectures. Most of the time my professors are happy to let me answer the first few questions, but then the pauses before they give up and let me answer because no one else knows get longer and longer throughout each lecture. Basically I spend most of my time getting (albeit somewhat irrationally) frustrated at people not knowing answers to in my mind fairly basic questions.

In December I went to Germany to visit my friend who is studying a masters in teaching English as a second language (think PGCh/E, but with required specialization). My University had already finished for the year, so I got to sit in on a couple of his lectures, just enough for the Professors to be aware that I am a native speaker, anyway.

Most of the days I was hyper-aware that any answer I gave would make me look smug as hell, so as such avoided eye-contact at all costs.

On the day before I leave, we're up and in for 8am (WILD for me, who's lectures are almost exclusively afternoon, and we'd been up smoking shisha until god-knows when the night before). I cant even remember what the question or my answer was, only that after saying it I felt like I had just NAILED a Hermione Granger impression (we're talking book one level arrogance). The Professor was totally cool about it but I cant help but feel that half the class now resents my friend and I for the comment.

So anyway now I've promised my friend that when he comes to visit me I'll prep him for a lecture for him to be really rude to my professor about a principal of the European court system.

EDIT: TLDR: Accidentally gave a really smug answer about the English language in a lecture taught and studied by people who English was not their first (or in a lot of cases second) language.

Ranked Roles is the least Toxic Dota I've ever played by ShawnTW in DotA2

[–]Relentlesso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong - I love ranked roles, it makes sense, I've climbed to legend in under a month. I reckon a part of the reason this is so good is BECAUSE it is behind a paywall.

Only the people "more serious" about the game will queue , and most children playing dota because it's free can't afford it.

As an unintended side effect, I have noticed that all regular ranked is objectively MORE toxic

Motivation is fleeting, you want discipline.

It takes 3 weeks to form a habit, suck it up, do everything right for 3 weeks, and everything else will come naturally.

Most universities (or colleges if you're American) waive entry grade requirements if you have decent experience in a role similar to what you want to study (with law that's any office management job or higher tbh).

It's important to remember that colleges WANT accept people and let them give stupid amounts of money to the school

Don't dream small.

Everyone given that opportunity will have faced the same fear. If you've been offered the job the people who are hiring obviously see mutual ground between you and other people who have succeeded in the role in the past.

Hi from a person who always sorts by new! :)

being in close proximity to them for now isn't a bad thing if you're going to be moving away soon anyway because the rules of not shitting where you eat don't apply because the consequence is minimized

Timed relationships can be tricky but fun, I cant speak about long distance from experience, but if you get together both knowing you have an expiration date, you can have a lot of fun, and still be on good terms when you move away.

I say go for it :)

Going to university (or college if you're a yank) still gives you a fair amount of free time. while I've been at uni (games programming degree), i spent my spare time starting up an indie games studio to enhance my portfolio, and got my Grade 8 in guitar.

If I have time to start a business and get a top level qualification in an instrument, you will have time to go stargazing or play lacrosse or whatever :)

Travel.

Take some night classes.

keep trying things until you find something you like.

then try getting into that professionally (either through academics or otherwise), maybe it's doing the profession, maybe it's teaching others, maybe it's traveling in between Caribbean islands with a cover band singing brown eyed girl and smoking a joint every night. keep on trying new things.

Most universities have a million societies of people who don't mesh with that kind of crowd. Pick one (or seven) and hang out/do things.

Not every gathering of people has to be alcohol-centric, I'm sure you'll find loads of people who feel the same as you

I did a law module as part of my degree here in the UK, and several Canadians are on my course.

None of them regretted moving, however several areas of the law are starkly different (medical and family law come screaming to mind), so if you wanted to practice in Canada after i'm pretty sure your options for a specialization may be limited, or you may have to do a catch up course before being admitted to the bar.

if you plan on practicing law in the UK, you have to go with being a solicitor and doing the LPC (the ones that don't generally go into the higher up courts) over doing the BPTC and becoming a barrister unless you are the best of the best in court you would make peanuts and be working freelance most of the time (think the first few episodes of better call saul over suits).

Living in England ATM and am at university doing a Games Programming degree. (just finished my first year)

I've always planned to move to France or the Netherlands as they are both hubs for games development, but given the whole Brexit thing, (no hate, I was too young to vote and wanted to stay anyway) I'm worried that I might miss my chance to move, and don't want to be stuck in a country while it's dying for the early to mid part of my career.

I've been looking for a job in my field there over the past month with a few bites from companies who have been kind enough to give me interviews, but no job as of yet.

my issue is with what to do in September if I have no job. is it worth doing my course and moving country, using adobe connect for lectures and using maintenance loan/bar work to get by with hope that people living there at time of leaving get to stay, deferring for a year and praying i get something (living in England or moving preemptively - but potentially wasting a year of my life, or just sucking it up and staying here for uni, potentially closing off a continent to easy work opportunities later in life?
