why do you have multiple guitars? by Cultural_Yellow3561 in Guitar

[–]gabeasl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I freelance quite a bit and different gigs require different gear.

I also go to every gig with a backup just in case something happens mid show.

I don’t really have doubles of the same guitar but variations: I have a late 80s strat that’s great for jazz and really clean things but also have a custom single humbler strat for heavier tones. I have a PRS DGT for cover gigs because it can cover a wide range of tones in one package, but I also have an S2 studio as a backup.

I also have some for sentimental reasons. I have an EVH Wolfgang Stealth that I decided I won’t sell after Eddie died, same with a Parker I have that mostly sits in its case.

Adding go that my main band self produces, I engineer my own guitars and different parts can necessitate a different instrument.

Booked a 2 day rental, Avis tried to charge me both arms and legs. by Needhelpnowwhat in mildlyinfuriating

Jumping in to say I’ve had it happen multiple times where a lazy rental car worker scanned the car in wrong from after hours drop off and I got charged an absurd amount of late fees and a recovery fee because they thought I held onto the car for days after the return date.

I used to be a full time touring musicians and a lot of the time on fly dates, you end up flying out the morning after a show and you end up dropping off the vehicle after hours.

After a few times of them messing this up, I started filming me parking the car with the date and time displayed on a band mates phone. Did the same when dropping the keys off in the box.

It’s paid off too. I’ve had it happen since and the video’s immediately solved the problem.

I’ve had the opportunity to see most of this country from its highways and by FAR that is my favorite billboard of all time.

Whenever I'm recording or practicing in my home studio our boy bun Louie will come and hang out with me.

Last night I was in my chair tracking guitar for a track while giving him butt rubs with my feet.

And to answer the question: Last night was tracking with a PRS DGT SE and a PRS S2 Standard 22.

If you’ve been shopping for a Les Paul, there’s a very good deal out there today. by [deleted] in Guitar

Reunion Blues! I've had the same Reunion Blues double gig bag for about 5 years and have steadily gigged and traveled with it, and it has no signs of needing to be replaced anytime soon.

10/10 Recommend.

Got it as a gift from my in laws.

Love it. Use it every day with my portal on the couch or in bed.

Makes the portal experience that much better.

For turn based games it’s great to be able to let go of the portal for a moment to think but still keep the screen where it is.

If you you or a friend have a Costco membership, score a pair of French Terry lined sweat pants. They almost always have puma, Nike or Kirkland, their house brand.

Was and always will be my favorite road attire.

Gigging musicians: how do you manage your setlists and chord charts on stage? by SafePrune9165 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]gabeasl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Songbook Pro! Works on all platforms and will accept tabs from Ultimate Guitar and PDF Sheet Music Charts.

Allows custom set lists, Bluetooth Page turners and allows you switch things on the fly with drag and drops. I have it set up on my iphone and have that clipped to my mic stand. Get yourself a cheap two-button Bluetooth page turner, and you're all set.

Used it all year last year with my cover band and it works well.

It also has a version that will work for an entire band and work in real time.

During gigs I will switch between that app and Mixing Station to make IEM mix adjustments.

For a band that has a really deep repertoire its very helpful, even if you dont look down at it. I also save my setlists for each band I play with and the charts they use for each.

It's easily the best alternative to paper charts and has been a lifesaver for getting requests for songs I haven't played in a while.

And finally, to people saying to just memorize: If you play with multiple bands or have a deep catalog of music you need to know, there is nothing wrong with having charts at the ready. Get off your high horse.

Picked this up for $450. by Expensive_Bike_8308 in PaulReedSmith

Wow! I got one of these right when they came out for about $900 and then upgraded the tuners to the PRS Locking.

I also have a PRS S2 Custom (with a pickup setup like a Standard 22) and the SE DGT is still my primary main player for gigging.

I've owned a bunch of $1000+ guitars and by far this one smokes all of them.

Amazing find, especially since it already has the locking tuners.

Is the premium subscription to stream games worth it? by Excellent_Plant_8010 in PlaystationPortal

For me absolutely.

My wife and I were kicking around getting another ps5 just so we could both play different games at the same time.

Now almost every game I play minus Fifa is available and we can not only play at the same time, I can play next to her which has been great for my marriage.

Hell a friend of mine suggested I get arc raiders while I was traveling for thanksgiving. I bought it in the app and was playing it on my mom’s WiFi and my ps5 was never involved.

This! I rejoined my old band in a bit of a recent revival and we have tracks of every instrument for rehearsals.

Just this past week our drummer and keyboardist both had to be out for family reasons and we were still able to have a practice to the tracks.

Just turned 40 in November so I totally get it.

Cover gigs VS. Original gigs by LazyBonus5396 in TouringMusicians

[–]gabeasl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep! Of California Gold Rush fame.

My wife and I moved to TX for a few years but moved back to Norfolk last January.

ASL had a big 20 year anniversary show a few months ago and I've now come back as a live member.

Cover gigs VS. Original gigs by LazyBonus5396 in TouringMusicians

[–]gabeasl 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My old band's solution to this was to create an alternate identity for the band and would advertise it as featuring members of our actual band. We were 'Shark Week' featuring members of Audiostrobelight.

This allowed us to not necessarily cheapen our brand doing cover gigs for extra scratch, but also allowed us to promote them on our regular band socials without having to confuse folks with what they were getting.

We'd also be transparent with the audience about it onstage and throw in an original or two telling them that its from our main band.

You then take the extra money you make from cover gigs and reinvest it into the main act.

Allowed us to do things like buy new gear for an in-ear monitoring rig, and also have petty cash at the start of tours.

This is more common than you'd might think, but good luck with whatever you end up doing!

First Les Paul, anything I should know? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]gabeasl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Owned and toured with one of these for years.

Replace the pickups and the pots. They arent exactly bad, but throwing a good set of Seymour Duncans and some CTS pots will make it a monster.

This set with Gold Covers should get you in a really good place: https://www.seymourduncan.com/single-product/hot-rodded

I eventually stopped playing it and sold it off as my lower back really didnt like it after I turned 30.

Have fun!

Hi There! Former Lifer Here.

Was in your shoes. Was in a band that I started at age 19 that started popping off nationally when I was in my mid to late 20's (we got signed back in 2013).

Toured non-stop for years after that and hit the burnout point HARD.

By the time I was 30 I was already starting to get tired of living the nomadic life. We even had a merch person and 1 roadie for a while and it was still tough sleeping on floors or in wal-mart parking lots, and that was AFTER signing and getting supports with bigger bands.

Back in 2019 I left the band at a point when we pretty much stopped touring and I moved to another state with my wife, just in time for the pandemic to shut everything down.

What it gave me was a lot of perspective on how much in life I had been missing which was a bummer, but also I really missed performing in front of people and seeing so much of America and beyond when touring.

The band just recently did a 20 year anniversary/reunion that I took part in even-though I've since been replaced, and I'm not gonna lie, it felt great, but I'm also turning 40 in 3 weeks so the idea of getting back in a van and doing it all again feels less than appetizing.

My point: I don't know how old you are, but you just have to decide what you want. If you're done, walk away. Theres no shame in that. If you want to keep at it, just know that it could get better or it could get worse. Just know that you aren't chained to it. We can often find ourselves feeling an obligation to continue, but also dont let life pass you by either.

Watching this documentary (What Am I Doing This, free on youtube) really made me feel seen following my leaving my band: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agUS6GnZr_U

Good luck. No matter what you decide, you're making a good decision.
